Ray And Avery’s Touching And Tearful Second Chance Romance Brings Two Broken Hearts Together Under The Carefully Orchestrated Machinations Of A Son Concerned For His Mother’s Happiness.
Avery Stuart, about thirty, doesn’t regret everything she gave up to have Christopher. She had been taken in by her aunt and uncle when her parents died, but they weren’t in any way prepared to raise a teenager. When she found herself pregnant and was told to abort, she refused and they kicked her out. Out of options, Avery moved into an apartment with her best friend Mel, giving up her dream and the full ride to Juilliard she was offered in exchange for diapers and a waitressing job. Twelve years later and Mel still stood by her side, supporting her through it all.
With his boundless energy, remarkable intelligence, and unquenchable curiosity, Christopher kept Avery busy, which was a very good thing. She had never gotten over Ray, the love of her life and Christopher’s father. They had dated when he was stationed nearby Seattle and they fell deeply in love – or she thought they had. He was deployed to Afghanistan when he called and she told him about the pregnancy, but he simply hung up on her. He had chosen not to be part of their lives. But in all the years since, she hasn’t been with another man.
Ray Lancaster, about thirty, is a third generation military man. Silent and stoic, he had the love of his life reject him while on his first deployment to Afghanistan twelve years ago. His repeated attempts to call and write went unanswered. Although her memory faded over time, he had only had a few other women in his life since then, and none came close to her. It was in the Congo where the IED went off that scarred him both physically and emotionally. The occasional pain and the scar above his right knee and thigh remind him of the attack that left him honorably discharged and his good friend Captain Stantley dead. Years of therapy haven’t erased the guilt he feels for Stantley’s sacrifice. Stantley saved his life, but he had also helped Ray get up the nerve to ask out the girl of his dreams. Even today Ray hears Stanley’s voice barking orders in his head. The years of therapy could never erase Stantley’s ghost.
After his discharge, Ray created Lancaster Security, a private security firm catering to celebrities in LA. The company became his refuge, where he threw himself into his work. A fellow vet from his second tour in Afghanistan, Eric Mills is his right-hand man and the only person he trusts, though he often questions why. Eric’s non-stop talking and goofy humor try his patience, but he nevertheless put his friend in charge of the Seattle office which opened months ago. Ray plans to spend two weeks at the office before heading oversees to finalize the Hong Kong deal. It is a huge opportunity and the realization of years of hard work. He plans to set up offices for the small company’s third branch and run things from there.
When Eric got the email asking him to meet his son at the Seattle Museum of Natural History, he was certain Eric’s humor had gone over the line. Yet he couldn’t not show up. Despite the email’s words, he found himself dumbfounded when he came face to face with a miniature version of himself followed by an older but more beautiful-looking Avery, who appeared to be just as speechless as he was.
Avery can’t believe it when she catches up to Christopher and sees Ray for the first time in twelve years. He looks furious, though he has no right. Christopher, who had been told the truth when he asked about his father’s name years ago, confessed that he had looked up his father for his family tree project and arranged the meeting. Given a moment alone, Ray and Avery quickly discover that miscommunication had kept them apart all those years, and that their attraction to one another hasn’t changed. But it remains to be seen if they have changed and grown too far apart in the interim to pick up where they left off.
Ray and Avery’s touching and tearful second chance story brings two broken hearts together under the carefully orchestrated machinations of a son concerned for his mother’s happiness. Ray eagerly steps into the role of dad, but the Hong Kong deal puts him in a quandary. Although the couple decides to test the waters, their relationship may not be salvageable. He hopes a little time will bring clarity, but it only seems to muddy the waters. Ray and Avery eventually get their well-deserved happy ending.
There are a few issues that merit mention. First, it is unusual for an eleven year old to fall asleep in the car and need to be carried inside. Second, Christopher’s stunt near the end felt contrived. And third, the choice between going to Hong Kong or staying with Avery and Christopher was overly dramatic. All along there were many ways for Ray to go himself, temporarily or permanently, without giving up his new family. It was also always possible for him to hire or assign someone to go in his stead without sacrificing the deal.
Ray and Avery’s story is nicely written. The plot is fairly simple. There are a number of unique and interesting characters. Ray and Avery are both enjoyable to read about. The story is written in first person. The POV alternates between Ray and Avery. I rate this book four stars.

Aubrey Wright has written a 5-star book that has Avery and Ray facing their feeling they have for each other after 10 years apart. Avery and her son are out at the Seattle Museum of Natural History when he lets go of her hand and runs off. Avery tries to follow him but with the Museum being busy it is a little hard for her. She calls him and he answers and tells her he is outside. When she gets outside, she sees him beside a car and he is talking to the driver. She reaches him and tells him that he knows better than to talk to strangers. The driver gets out and she looks at him and can’t believe who is standing in front of her. He says, “Avery?” She said ” Hello Ray, What are you doing here?” He tells her that someone by the name of Christopher Stuart invited him saying that he was Ray’s son. Avery and Ray had been a couple until he let for the military and when she found out she was pregnant, she called him and she thinks that he hung up on her. After that, they lost touch with each other. Ray is in shock to find out that he has a son and he tells Avery that he wants to be a part of his life now that he knows about him. Ray is the owner of Lancaster Security and he offers to pay Avery child support, but Avery tells him no, she doesn’t want it. Avery is a waitress at a diner and wants to get Christopher into a private school where he can be more challenged than in public school where he is ahead of kids his own age. Avery has a meeting with the headmaster of the private school and things do not go the way she plans. The headmaster tells Avery that he has another appointment and that they can discuss this more over dinner. When she meets him for dinner, she gets a bad feeling about the whole thing. Things do not go well and as she tries to leave he grabs her are and he knees him, he catches her at her car and this is where Ray finds them after getting a call from Christopher telling him where they are and his feelings about the headmaster. Ray saves Avery but not in a good way. He loses control and beats the man, and gets arrested. Now Avery doesn’t know if she wants Ray around her son if he can lose control like that.
Can Avery and Ray work out their past and find their way back to each other?
Will Ray make the choice of staying with Avery and Christopher or will he decide to go and open his new office overseas?

Ray never knew that he was a dad until his son Christopher contacted him. No spoilers: this is a definite must read you will not be disappointed. This is a well written story which is filled with action, drama, angst, emotion and love, which all leads to a humorous and heart-warming story. I was totally captivated throughout this addictive page turner and I highly recommend for all.
This is such a wonderful story with lovely characters. This is the story of a misunderstanding because of miscommunication. What a wonderful character the son Christopher is bringing his estranged parents together. Avery and Ray were together and in love when Ray went off to war. When Avery found she was pregnant she phoned Ray to tell him and this is where the miscommunication comes in. A lovely story enfolds as they try to rekindle what they had before with the help of their son Christopher. I really enjoyed this romantic easy to read story and I recommend this very much.

For a genre I don’t typically enjoy reading this one wasn’t too bad I personally detest ‘never mentioned’ pregnancies where there’s bonding time lost between the other parent and the child it’s just wrong however with that aside the Characters were likeable enough that it was easy to get lost in the story and it didn’t hurt that the H was perfectly intense and dreamy

Avery and Ray have a past relationship and she gets pregnant with Christopher. I loved how sweet and smart Christopher was and that when he wanted to meet his dad he took matters into his own hands. I am also glad that even though there was a big miscommunication they were able to get past it. Ray and Avery were a really great couple and I loved their story.

I have said it before and I will say it again, I love Aubrey Wright as an author. She has once again sucked me into the story and gave me a character I could connect with on such an emotional level!
Avery is a single mother, trying to make ends meet and provide a life for her insanely gifted son Christopher. The father isn’t in the picture, in fact he hung up on her when she called to tell him she was pregnant. When Ray receives and email from someone claiming to be his son he thinks his best friend/business associate is playing a trick on him but he shows up at the agreed upon location. He doesn’t expect to see a boy that looks so similar to himself standing there with the girl that got away. When Avery and Ray have a conversation it becomes apparent that Ray never actually knew about Christopher but he wants to get to know his son. What comes next is one of the best single parent/second chance romance stories I’ve read with a little bit of danger, legal issues and a whole lot of drama mixed in.
I liked Avery a lot, I connected with her on a single parent level. Its hard to raise a kid alone and she was making sacrifices to support him, always nurturing and supporting his academic/personal interests. She might have come off as weak but she definitely can take care of herself when she needs to yet she knows how to have a little fun too! I liked Ray for the most part but when ever his internal dialogue would mention money related items I wanted to roll my eyes so hard but I gave him credit for knowing not to voice those thoughts. I loved that he immediately wanted to support Christopher and in turn Avery and I really liked that even after all the years he could still show his softer side to both of these two characters. The relationship between Christopher and Ray really tugged at my heart strings! Let’s be real for a minute.. any single parent raising a child without the other parent in the picture has at least an occasional fantasy of how it would play out if that person came back. This story might not be the ideal fantasy but remove a little bit of the drama, danger and legal issues and this might be close to a lot of peoples fantasies!
I just have to mention that Christopher and Eric were my two favorite supporting characters. Eric because he was hilarious and knew how to push Ray’s buttons and when to have a come to your senses talk with him about everything. He provided a very comical piece to the story and I would gladly read a book with him as the lead. Christopher was also my favorite because of how much he loved his mom and how he wanted her to be happy. It broke my heart when he admitted why he reached out to Ray but it also showed what an amazing young man he was.
I honestly loved this book and I highly recommend it!

3.5 **** stars. This is a real soft read. He is shocked that he has an 11 year old son. I liked how he stepped right up to be responsible and get to know he son. The kid was ingenious to contact his father to meet, albeit his mother had no idea. Not much violence or drama. It was just a really nice book. Very enjoyable if you need to chill.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book
Exciting read from start to finish

Aubrey Wright is an amazing writer. Having read many of her books, she has a unique way of keeping you interested. This book was no different. It was a page turner from the start. You could connect with the characters and fell in love with them. This book will keep you wanting more. It was so good I did not want to put it down. I am already waiting on the next one. If you have not experienced one of her books this is a good one to start with. But once you read it you will want more.

This was very enjoyable read. I loved Ray, Avery, and Christopher. Due to a major misunderstanding Avery raises her son alone for a number of years. Once Ray diacovers that he has a son he easily and happily accepts him. OnceAnery and Ray are back in each others lives they realize their chemistry and love it still there. Although it was a little unbelievable how easily they forgave each other, it was also very nice not to have all the angst. Overall this was a good book and a sweet second chance romance.
I have to say I love Aubrey as a writer her characters are always so realistic and her books flow so well that you feel as if you are reading about the lives of friends and this one was no exception
Avery has spent the last ten years raising her son yes times have been tough and she has had to give up some of her dreams but she wouldn’t give up her son for anything. Now though Christopher has decided he wants to know more about his past and he has tracked down and written to his father. Ray is stunned when he receives the letter he had no idea he had a son in fact if he had he would never have walked away from Avery something that he did as he thought he was to damaged by what he had seen in the military Now he has to try to rebuild a relationship not only with his new son but also with the woman he has always loved. Can they be a family You will have to read to see
Christopher is an 11 yr old with questions about his father, namely why he had never been in his life. His mother never hid who his father was so he tracks him down and seems a e-mail to meet.
Ray never knew he had a kid so he thinks it’s a prank when he opens his e-mail one day and sees a message from some kid claiming to be his. He goes to the meeting anyways because he’s curious, he’s floored when a boy who looks like him approaches followed by Avery.
Avery thought that Ray didn’t want her or their child. When she told him she was pregnant he hung up and that was that. She’s shocked to see him again and when she finds out he didn’t even know about Christopher she’s quick to forgive and forget.
It was really nice to see a change in character structure in this story. I enjoyed how bright Christopher was and how mature he seemed. His age does show sometimes but not often. The chemistry between Ray and Avery isn’t that burning ‘we can’t keep our hands off each other’ type, They have a strong base and when they finally do move to that step it feels more organic and lasting right from the beginning.
Eric and Mel are both great supporting characters who have very unique personalities that I loved.
