Jenna Lynn Badger has a new series in town! June is a caterer on an RV vacation with her daughter Rebecca and son-in-law Nathan who film a YouTube series about interesting areas around the country near different RV camps to fund their travel lifestyle. June has joined them because an accident left her recovering from hip surgery and unable to work in her catering company while she recovers.
In Utah, the campground has alpacas who make the campground a wonderful stop on their trip. When Prince Albert sees one of the females in his pack being “alpaca-napped”. he is distraught and tries to alert the humans.
June ends up somehow on the search for Penelope, the pregnant missing alpaca, and the person who stole her.
A light, fun, easy cozy mystery told from not only June’s point of view but also from Prince Albert’s.
I can’t wait to see what happens next and neither should you! Pick up this wonderfully fun book ASAP!
The author chose a unique twist for a cozy mysteries. And that’s saying a lot. Most cozies are very cookie-cutter one is similar to the next and so on but this one was unique. I loved the characters. There was quite a bit of humor. I look forward to reading the next book.
Loved Herd is the Word. It’s a refreshing read….no murder, no shooting, no cussing, no x rated scenes. It’s a great who done it mystery. A book that the whole family can enjoy. And you just might fall in love with the alpacas and the quirky characters.
It’s going to be hard to wait for the next book.
Prince Albert, the sole male alpaca of Castle Creek Campground, is protective of his herd of females, especially the pregnant Penelope, so he’s alarmed one cold spring night when he smells a trusted human entering the females’ pen and leading Penelope away. Despite his plaintive cries, her absence isn’t discovered until the next morning, which shocks the campers and starts a round of accusations against June Winters’ family.
Recovering from a hip injury while traveling in a 30-year-old RV with her video blogger daughter and son-in-law, June is not only concerned about their online reputation, which can quickly be destroyed by a few baseless allegations, but at a crossroads in her life and looking for a new direction. Uncovering who kidnapped Penelope, especially when the campground’s owner, Blanche Bidet, refuses to call the police or even allow them on the property, seems like a good start.
She finds a few clues and makes friends with a couple of the permanent residents, although one in particular relentlessly blames June and her family for the kidnapping. Then Prince Albert disappears, but Blanche still won’t call the police and the finger-pointing continues, so June keeps investigating even when Rebecca and Noah ask her to step back. And she promises she will as she creeps toward shadows she knows holds danger.
This first alpaca mystery is intriguing not only because of the unusual animals that attract campers to Castle Creek Campground, but due to Badger’s focus on June’s inner deliberations as she contemplates a life-altering disability, the realities of empty-nest widowhood, and returning to her catering business. By handling it as a genuine debate, rather than a simple subplot, June’s journey through that reckoning is on its own worth the price of admission. The kidnappings, the campground, and its resident oddballs add the rich flavor that sets Herd is the Word apart from the flock.
Imagine camping at a beautiful location out in the wilderness. Sounds like a dream come true, until you are thrown into the middle of a mystery. Can June solve the puzzle with the clues she has found? Will the Alpacas be safe and cared for or will a greedy person try to hurt them? Follow the story and you will find out. This is a very entertaining story and I am hooked on the series. Cannot wait to read the next book in the series. A must add to your to be read pile.
June was a caterer but had not been working due to a fall. Along with her daughter and son-in-law, she decided a change of scenery would do her good. They moved her old trailer to a trailer park that had an alpaca herd right next to it. June had never even heard of alpacas, but they sure got her interest when one went missing. She decides to find out who did it.
This is the first in a fun, new cozy mystery series, A Camping Capers Cozy series, set on a camp ground with an alpaca herd right there. The characters were creative and well crafted, all with unique and sometimes kooky personalities.
Not all the characters are human though. What makes this cozy mystery really stand out is that you see what is happening from the alpacas’ point-of-view, as well as the humans. This takes the story to a whole new level adding fun interesting perspective. The storyline is full of action, clues, misdirection, danger and suspense, keeping you engaged until the end. The narrative is great, the dialogue interesting and the overall writing is wonderful. I just might have found a new cozy to put into my favourites pile.
Delightful
Fun start to a new series!
June is mending from a bad hip and traveling in an old RV in a caravan with her daughter and son-in-law. They all stay at Castle Creek campground. One of the draws at the camp ground is their herd of alpacas. Prince Albert is the king of the herd task with protecting his females. One night someone enters the girls pen and steals the very pregnant Penelope. Too late Prince Albert realizes the familiar human scent is up to no good. When June’s family is blamed by the other campers of the alpaca-napping, it’s up to her to find out what really happened. Love the characters and there are so many directions this series can go. Can’t wait for the next one!
I received an ARC. This is my honest review.
One of Prince Albert’s ladies has been kidnapped just before she is ready to give birth. June’s daughter and son-in-law are accused of taking them so June must figure out who really took her before they all leave the campground. Then Prince Albert disappears. June thinks she has figured out who took them and gets kidnapped herself while investigating.
I was given an advance copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
June Singers is staying at a campground in Utah that features an alpaca farm as an attraction. When two are stolen and her daughter and son in law are suspected she is forced to investigate. Who has stolen them and why. Everyone seems to be a suspect. Told through the eyes of June and Prince Albert one of the stolen alpacas. An interesting and enjoyable novel. Highly Recommended.
If this first book in a new series is an indication of stories yet to come, this series should have a long, successful run. The book is well written and features characters you quickly come to care about. Set in an RV campground, the story centers around June Winters, a caterer recovering from a serious accident, who finds she has a knack for solving mysteries and realizes some of the zany residents could easily become friends, while discovring she has a special bond with the park’s leading attraction–its alpacas.
I requested and received an ARC of this book. My review is voluntary and reflects my honest opinion.

Herd is the Word: A Camping Capers Cozy Mystery is the first book in the Alpaca My Bags series by Jenna Lee Badgers.
This was an enjoyable first book in a new series.
I thought it was interesting to see the crime from the alpaca’s point of view. June is a likeable character and the campground is full of quirky characters.
I look forward to reading about June’s next adventure.
I received this book as a gift and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
Vacation time in a campground with llamas proves to be a little exciting for June, Rebecca, and Nathan.
Everything is not as it appears with occupants of the campground. Things or animals or people are missing, and cops are finally called in. People accused or pointed at for certain things are finally cleared. A little surprised by the ending because it was not really what I was expecting.
Well done Jenna.
A quirky and fun read! This was an unexpected and comedic book at times! The juxtaposition of the animal and human characters is entertaining to say the least. Still some family dynamics, mystery, and such afoot on both sides…but a light afternoon read that will leave you with a smile on your face! I have a new respect for alpacas now. Highly recommend!
Prince Albert, as the only male alpaca, is protective of all the females in the herd. Why would someone take the pregnant Penelope in the middle of the night? June gets into the investigation after fingers are pointed at her daughter. Even though she promised her daughter she would stay out of it she just can’t help herself! Wonderful story filled with interesting characters, human and alpaca, and an intriguing storyline. I can’t wait for the next book in this series!
I received an advance copy of this book and I voluntarily wrote an honest review.
What a fun start to a new series! It is set in a campground with a resident alpaca herd. When an alpaca disappears, one of the campers sets out to find it. This is a delightful read, with an interesting plot and quirky characters. I’m looking forward to the next book. I received this book free and chose to make a voluntary, unbiased review.
I loved it. It starts at a campground in Utah. June is camping with her daughter and son-in-law. We have alpacas, kidnapping, disgruntled campers and a mystery for June to solve while recovering from a hip injury.
Kept me interested from the beginning to the end. Give this book a chance I think you will like it. Jenna Lynn Badger did a great job on this book I can wait to read the next one. I have loved her other books also.
I had so much fun reading this book! Learn something about Alpacas. Meet the unique characters. Try to solve the case. Meet Joan and she how she goes from a caterer to a camp host.
I read this book as an ARC and literally loved it! My husband and I are fifth wheel campers, so it’s an added delight that the story takes place at an RV park called Castle Creek.
Prince Albert is the king of his female alpaca herd. His favorite love, Penelope and her unborn cria (baby) is stolen right out from under his nose.
June Winters is visiting with her daughter and son in law while recovering from a hip surgery. She gets involved with the search to find Penelope before she delivers her baby alpaca any day now
There are many clues which seem to lead to a dead end before June pieces them altogether only to be tied up the night before she leaves the park. Prince Albert saves her and the park residents team together to corner the culprit before the police arrive.
June decides to stay on as park host and Prince Albert titles her as Queen of the Humans since she is now herding the RV park residents.
This is such a fun read! I can’t wait to read the next book!!
