When a wary farm girl takes on a big city chiropractor as her stand-in boyfriend, convincing her family they’re in love might be easier than convincing themselves they’re not. There are certain things a single country mom learns to accept. Like the fact that she now shares a sacred bond of empathy with her dairy cow, that spit-up can reach places it never should be able to, and that a pretend … to, and that a pretend relationship is far less complicated than one her southern mama insists on setting her up in. At least, it is when you have anyone’s luck besides Ainsley Jamison’s.
Only in Ainsley’s life would her imaginary decoy turn out to be a real-life city boy who is as hilariously wrong for her as he is persistent. With less than four weeks before her entire family shows up for Thanksgiving, they don’t have a cotton-picking prayer of turning Connor into a believable cowboy in time, let alone fix up her place while they’re at it.
Heaven knows Ainsley’s already maxed out her faith hoping she made the right choice raising her son there. But while praying she didn’t make a mistake taking on her daddy’s farm is one thing, praying she didn’t make one taking on Connor Allen is another entirely. One that’s about to turn everything in her life upside down.

Started as a bit of a farce and half way through turned really serious… It still had some lighter moments, but emotions ran high for the most part.
The characters were well done, including the four-legged ones. We get to know the families involved enough to cherish their hard-earned HEA.
I have never laughed so much reading a book before! This story was so fun to read. I’m not sure I’d ever want to be one of Crystal Walton characters. They are put through so many funny events, it’s hard to believe these could actually happen to real people. However, I know for sure they have.
In this story, we get a real feel of what farm life is like. Getting up in the wee hours of the morning, doing chores that might get you really dirty or smelly, being so tired at the end of the day that you fall into bed exhausted, and then have to do it all over again the next day.
If you were raised on a farm you would understand all this, but if you’re a city doctor and foreign to this way of life, it might be quite an eye-opener.
This is what happened to Connor when he agreed to help Ainsley out of a predicament she got herself into. Little did he know his whole life would change.
Some of the funniest times in this book were the interaction between Connor and the other farm animals. I simply loved it all.
Crystal Walton has a wonderful way of telling a story that will stick with you. There are many fun quotes and comments in this book.
This book also has connections with her last book, and it was fun finding out more about those characters. It’s like they’re old friends we’re re-connecting with.
Crystal Walton truly has a way of bringing emotions and feelings into her writing. You’ll ache, laugh, cry, smile, snort and do happy dances all while enjoying a fantastic story!
You may even want to drink coffee and ride a horse!
I highly recommend you put this book up and read it. I was given this book by the author which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
What a sweet story! While making tough decisions and trying to please her mother, Ainsley deals with more turmoil than she ever wanted. The plan she creates has the possibility of bringing unexpected true love. Author Crystal Walton has written another beautiful story. I received a complimentary copy of the book. No review was required.
Crystal Walton knows how to write a funny, laugh-out-loud kind of rom-com with lovable characters and life lessons on regrets, grace, and the power of love. This book is a follow up to Romancing the Conflicted Cowboy (Saga Valley series) but can be read as a stand-alone, especially since it’s not a part of the Saga Valley series. If you’ve read Reed’s story in Romancing the Conflicted Cowboy, you’ll meet his brother Connor in this book (and if you haven’t met Reed yet, you’ll learn about him).
Connor, a successful, charming chiropractor, finds himself in a tiny town of Whispering Pines, NC while trying to figure out what life means for him. Ainsley, a tough but tender-hearted farmer, is just trying to survive as a single mom and overcome the grief that threatens to swallow her every day. Once these two meet, sparks and hilarious events fly to make the plot quite entertaining.
If you enjoy clean contemporary romance with lots of laughs, this book will hit the spot. I received a copy of the book from the author and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
Ainsley thinks she needs a fake boyfriend to appease her mother. Her first meeting with Connor was pretty funny. I loved him. He is a city boy and she is a country girl. The scenes with Connor and the animals especially the rooster were so funny. I thought Ainsley and her cousin were too hard on him when he was trying so hard to help. What happens when she thinks she is doing the best for him? What does he do when he finds out the truth? This book had some hard life lessons, family issues, and unrequited love. Loved how once everyone truly communicated and listened issues were resolved. Sweet series. I received an advance copy from the author and all opinions are you own.
This is a must read. I was laughing continually as Conner tried to fit into country life. This book will keep you entertained and on edge until the very end. The characters are so real that you feel part of their family.
Ainsley is a very quirky character who is trying so hard to do the right thing for her son. I wasn’t always sure why Connor pursued her like he did but I did love Connor and how great he is.
This story gave me ALL the feels! You have Ainsley, a single mother of a baby boy who is struggling day in and day out to keep things afloat in her life and on her farm. She is a HOOT! Her personality and her comebacks had me laughing out loud so many times. When she enters her Chiropractor’s office for her appointment, her mother calls and starts trying to set her up with people so she pulls a name off of a business card, Connor Allen, as a fake boyfriend to curb her mother’s meddling. Little does she know that Connor is standing in the room and is her chiropractor for the day! He was humored and insisted that she follows through with her plan of having him be her stand-in boyfriend for Thanksgiving.
Poor Connor had no idea what he was getting into when he agreed to step out of his NYC business lifestyle into the midst of Ainsley’s funny farm! Once again, I laughed countless times at the animals and situations Connor found himself in. I give the man an awful lot of credit for sticking it out. It was definitely not an easy task to do between an over-friendly male goat, a coop full of non-friendly chickens, a pig with an identity crisis, and a fainting goat! You can only imagine what transpires! Through it all, he manages to see what a determined, unique, and amazing lady Ainsley is.
This story had me laughing so much, yet melting into a puddle in the sweet parts. I felt like I was right there with the characters on the page! Crystal Walton is a very talented writer that has a way of bringing words to life, and I know any story of hers is at the top of my to read list. I recommend this book to all who love a clean love story with lots of humor between it’s pages. I received an advance copy of this book from her, but that in no way affected my review. All opinions are my own!
I loved this book!! It was so good, so much fun and very entertaining. It also had some very poignant moments. It is overall a great book. I read it in just a couple of days and that’s only because I couldn’t spend as much time reading as I wanted to. It was a book that kept me interested in it and wanting more.
I received an ARC, but it in no way influenced my review.
With a dash of faith and a heap of country charm, this faux fiancé fiasco is flirtatious and fun! Ainsley’s bruised heart is dragging her down like an anchor of grief and pain but she’s a farm-strong mama bear who won’t quit.
Although he may not realize it at first, buttoned-up city boy Connor is stifled by his father’s grandiose hustle-bustle plans. Down-home small-town family man looks oh so good on the good doctor and he holds his own when the southernisms start to fly!
I highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a good laugh with lots of heart and I’m looking forward to Walton’s next Stand-in installment!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.
I’ve read and enjoyed several of Crystal Walton’s stories in the past, so I was interested in seeing what her new book was like. Her Stand-In Cowboy has a different feel than Walton’s previous ones–it’s a little more rom-com and light. The setting is fun, the characters are endearing and quirky, and the animals are even more quirky and eccentric. Connor was such a great sport through it all. I would have probably been running the other way! Ainsley was an interesting heroine, and I enjoyed seeing her growth through the story. I would recommend this if you’re looking for an easy, light read.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
Loved this book! This book had me in so many places. I shed a few tears too. Great characters (human and animal) and well written. Highly recommend it!
Loved this book!
A good clean romance. Ainsley is struggling to keep her farm running and her matchmaking mother off her back when she makes Connor, who is finds his place in life, her fake boyfriend. See how it ends?
What a fun story about a fake boyfriend that turns into so much more. The animal antics had me laughing so hard and the banter between the two main characters was priceless. I really liked that Connor found what he did not even know he wanted or was looking for, a ready made family and a home. I also liked that Ainsley and Connor brought out the best in each other , filled in what was missing, and helped each other’s hearts to heal while opening their hearts up to their family’s love. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.
You know how there are just some authors you read and you think to yourself, “Wow… so-an-so does _____ really, really well!” That’s what it’s like reading a Crystal Walton book. She tells stories filled to the brim with over-the-top wit and sarcasm (my love language), and she does it really, really well.
Her Stand-in Cowboy is not your typical big-city guy falls in love with a country girl story, even though that’s what you know is going to happen when you pick up the book. It’s got layer after layer of emotion you can feel from each character despite the fact it’s not written from the 1st person POV. That depth is then coupled with mishaps and moments that are equal parts hysterical and heartwarming. (Read the part(s) about the goat and tell me if you don’t agree…)
Sometimes I love sitting down with a cheeky, fun read. And when I’m in that kind of mood, this is exactly the type of book I’ll reach for. Walton for the win!
I wasn’t sure that I was going to enjoy this book as it started out like a slapstick movie, where anything that could go wrong, did. However, as the plot progressed it remained funny and entertaining, but issues emerged with real people dealing with their everyday problems. Ainsley as a single mom found life tough but not difficult enough to give up the farm she inherited from her father, nor to take on one of the suitors her mother kept throwing at her as a husband and father to her sweet baby. Thinking to avert another disaster when her mother came to visit with not one but two young men in tow, she accepts Conner’s offer to stand in as her boyfriend for Thanksgiving. Conner is dealing with his own family issues and as much as Ainsley needs to stand up to her mother, Conner has to let his father understand that the path chosen for him by his Dad is not the one he intends to follow. The book is generally well written and clean. It is also funny and romantic and closes on a positive note for all. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Her Stand-in Cowboy was so much fun to read! I loved the well-developed main characters, Connor and Ainsley. Crystal Walton wrote a great clean romance with many humorous situations. Just wait until you get to the part about Spock! The banter between Ainsley and her two best friends sounds so natural that you just know they’ve been besties forever. There’s the HEA that we all want and love and a great epilogue too. I recommend this to clean/wholesome romance readers and to Christian romance readers.
