It’s just another day …or so .. in the life of Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane. The first body found is that of a woman … she’s frozen and she’s hanging from a tree.
When Alton and Kane investigate, they find this is only the beginning. There are multiple burial sites nearby. Who are these women? There are no missing women reports ..so where have they come from? And how did they get here?
When Alton and Kane are thwarted time and time again, the killer seems to be able to stay two steps ahead of them. The killer might be closer than they think … and that puts Alton in the cross hairs.
As with all the book in series, this is well written, suspense filled thriller. The action is non- stop and filled with twists and turns that swirl around the solidly drawn characters. Although 9th in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone, but I highly recommend starting at the beginning. The ongoing character development is superb and the crimes are riveting.
Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
You are back in Black Rock and there is another serial killer, you are taken first through the mind of the woman trying to get away, then to the man that is killing. While that is happening Jenna, and Kane who were taking time skiing come across a woman in need and you get to see Kane in full action. Afterward what is left adds another part to the story and to their ongoing relationship.
You of course have Wolfe and his daughter and also the deputy and other people that were in the other books. Here though you are taken through the eyes of the victims and when they are taken and through their ordeal being held captive which adds to the story. Add in the weather with it being winter and the snow not letting which adds to their frustration in finding any clues, but helping the person doing the crimes. This is just another good book in the series. I received this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 5 stars. Follow us at http://www.1rad-readerreviews.com
If you like thrillers, suspense, mystery, misdirection and you haven’t read D.K. Hood you are missing out and have 8 books in front to grab you, twist you up, make you shudder and turn on all the lights.
Each book you watch Sheriff Jenna Alton and deputy David Kane grow. You get to know the team better and their families. You become invested and wants some of Aunt Bettys food! You never know what creepy enterprising twisted story line will be, but I promise you each book gets better and better. This was a one sitting read. I had to know how it ended. I just knew who it was – and I was wrong. D.K. Hood reels you in, cuts you loose and scoops you back up again. Fast paced, creepy, realistic, non stop thrilling ride. Highly recommend, never disappointed. I missed this one on NetGalley, but thats ok, this series is a keeper.
This is becoming one of my favorite series. The writing is crisp, the characters are realistic and likable, and the villains are always super-creepy. The action starts right away so there’s no guessing about where it’s headed and this one really takes the cake. The camaraderie between Kane and Alton has grown over the series. The author also pays attention to secondary characters. he characters all have their strengths and together they make a team. I’m trying to avoid the plot, because I really think books like this need to be experienced, and I don’t want to be the one to spoil someone’s experience. This is one of the few series that I think you really can read as stand-alones, but I do think you miss the background of the team. For a detailed review, please visit Fireflies and Free Kicks. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for a digital ARC of the book.
A serial killer with ice sculpture! and one woman on his mind: thrills, action and lots of snow!
This latest in D.K. Hood’s series about the perils of keeping the peace in rural Montana is gruesome and tense. A serial killer has chosen Sheriff Alton’s jurisdiction to display his diabolical mutilation of some unidentified young women. Alton fears the killer’s victims are attracted to the area by news stories touting the ready access to homeless shelters in a time of body-numbing cold. With low population density and lots of forest and remote country to hide in, it’s perfect territory for the killer’s lair.
Hood keeps the suspense up right through the high action climax. And it’s not only young homeless women who are put in danger. There’s a sideplot involving Detective Kane and a local redhead that adds some good extra flair to the plot and even Medical Examiner Wolfe’s daughter draws the killer’s notice.
This was the third book I’ve read in the series and the author always keeps me guessing right to the end. I will definitely be looking to read more works by D.K. Hood!
Thanks to publishers Bookouture and NetGalley for providing an advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Author D.K. Hood sure knows how to write an excellent crime thriller. The pace of this story is fast and the storyline flows well. I love how well Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane work together. A repeat appearance by FBI Special Agent Jo Wells and Detective Ty Carter assisting with the crime investigation is a super addition to the storyline.
Her Shallow Grave by D.K. Hood is the ninth book in her Detectives Kane and Alston series. Black Rock Falls, Montana gets more than its fair share of crazy killers. The twists and turns and surprises along the way make this an edge-of-your-seat read that’s hard to put down until the end.

Sheriff Jenna Alton and her partner Deputy David Kane take on a new serial killer who is terrorizing Black Rock Falls in this, the latest entry into the Alton and Kane series. They may have just the most deranged killer yet on their hands.
Someone is murdering young women and after dismembering them leaving the body parts around the town in arranged positions. He leaves no clues; no forensic evidence. The pathologist, Dr. Shane Wolfe, figures they were frozen prior to being dismembered with a chainsaw.
The story is interspersed with little asides from both the killer and the captive’s point of view.
Jenna and Kane ask local FBI Agents Jo Wells and her partner Ty Carter for assistance. Added to this is the fact that Kane has a stalker. When she is thwarted by Kane, the stalker sets their sights on Jenna – with dire consequences.
The investigation is intensive and they have some viable suspects. But, which one is it?
In an exciting standoff involving the suspect and a woman who managed to escape, the killer is both identified and finally subdued.
This is a very well written and plotted novel. The transitions are flawless and the story is very interesting and engaging. Ms. Hood does a remarkable job in describing the bitterly cold weather that has hit the area and all the attendant issues that arise out of such weather. I felt cold just reading it. I like Jenna and Kane and the rest of the gang. I like how they all work together so well and seem to be good friends as well as colleagues.
I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for forwarding to me a copy of this very fine book for me to read, enjoy and review.
