This author is fast becoming one of my favorites. Have read 2 of this series. Whether she is writing cowboys or pirates, it’s all good…
Some predictable for the evil pirate (villain) – the love story good and action is well moving. A bit left hanging at the end to continue the series.
I absolutely could not put this book down. I love how she brings him back to life and feeling again. To me it’s amazing because of all she’s been through and shes not one to keep dwelling on what bad things Roche inflicted on her instead she embrace’s the possibilities of being loved by him. To me that speaks of a very strong woman.
Her Pirate To Love by Michelle Beattie is a good beach read. Pirate Romance is another new genre (thank you, Johnny Depp) and I wasn’t horribly disappointed.
I knew I wasn’t going to find anything deep or emotionally stirring when I started this book. The main characters are well developed, and the plot is rather solid. There is a bit of foreshadowing half way through the book, which sadly is none in a very, very transparent way.
I was struck by Beattie’s need to put a note to her readers before the start of the book, explaining why she wrote what she did. While it told me Beattie listens to her fans, I felt bad that she felt she had to justify her writing. I can’t remember which author said it, but when you write, you write for YOU and no one else. I don’t think an author should ever apologize for their work.
With that being said, there were a few things that just rubbed me the wrong way.
First, in her letter, Beattie says she didn’t include the very real possibility of rape in this story, but goes on to have her protagonist, Grace, be pregnant by her original captor. There are no lurid descriptions of the act, but if Grace is a captive, there’s no way she would willingly consent to sex with her original captor. I’m therefore assuming she meant Steele, Grace’s second captor wouldn’t rape her, which he didn’t. To read “no rape” in the letter, then discover Grace is unwillingly pregnant is just confusing.
The second thing that got my back up was the stereotypical way the Irish are portrayed in this book. One character is even called “Paddy,” a demeaning nickname given to Irish men and used in racial comments and slurs to this day. Beattie also has her Irish characters speaking in stereotypical Irish vernacular, even going so far as to misspell ‘appetite’ as ‘apatite.’ This angered me not only as a reader, but as a descendant of Irish ancestors. There’s no need for perpetuating commonly held stereotypes like this. I doubt Beattie would have done this with black characters.
Like I said, it’s good for a beach read. It’s the first in a series and contains very obvious references to Beattie’s past works, so if you loved this nook, you can search for others just like it. As for me, my jury’s out, but my TBR stack is high enough that I doubt I’ll read any more of Beattie’s works for a long time.
I loved this whole series! Wonderful characters. Couldn’t stop reading!!
Very good book – author created an ending that kept you wanting to read the series.
Not the usual romance….. unique and I loved it.
This was an easy an entertaining read. Fairly predictable but I like the characters so even though you know where it is headed it is a good read. The pirate chase angle made it a little more action packed than a typical historical romance.
Great story but not difficult to see the end game.
It was a great read. It was sexy, full of adventure, and had interesting characters. Highly recommended.
A great beach read! Twists arise from the start. You don’t need to read the previous volumes
Loved how the characters grow throughout the story and find themselves. Both of their stories are heartbreaking.
I like the story
Loved the story line and the characters
Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
Wonderful read. I loved this book so much I have ordered 3 more of Elizabeth Roses’s books and I can’t wait to read them… She is very easy to read and wonderful characters.
I love all her books!
it was great reading
The story was okay. The ending was rather abrupt leading you to buy the next book.
Good book, surprise ending. Found a few details within the book that didn’t line up, which took away some enjoyment, but otherwise pretty good.
Overcoming grief especially when you have someone who wants to help you and won’t give up until they do. Also, children kidnapped to be slaves, cruelty and, love interest.
