‘Hooked from the first page right until the last… I didn’t see the bombshell coming until it was on the page… Skilfully plotted and sizzling with suspense.’ Emma’s Biblio Treasures ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
What if the person you trust most in the world has been lying to you for your whole life?
Martha would do anything for her devoted mother, Fran. Now in her mid-twenties, Martha still lives with her in their … with her in their remote, pretty cottage in the Cornish countryside. Fran paints illustrations, while Martha trains to be an animal nurse.
But then Martha sees a strange message on her mother’s phone – apparently from her estranged father.
He had been there for her first steps. He’d helped with her homework, and taken her for ice cream at weekends. And then, two days before her ninth birthday, he walked out. She never knew what went wrong, and she and Fran never heard from him again.
Desperate for answers, she tracks him down. But when they come face to face, she isn’t ready for the brutal truth.
Closing his eyes he says, ‘She hasn’t told you, has she? I’m not your father.’
Her mother has been telling lies. And not just about who her real father is…
As the lies start to unravel, someone will do whatever it takes to keep Martha from finding the truth.
A page-turning, gripping psychological thriller for fans of The Girl on the Train, Shalini Boland, and C. L. Taylor.

Her Mother’s Lies is a well-plotted story about a young woman who discovers that her mother has been lying and keeping secrets from her. It’s a twisty tale of family secrets, deceit, and the lengths a mother can go to to protect her child. This book is set in the Cornish countryside and is told from the perspectives of Martha and her mother Fran. The plot was intriguing and provided just the right amount of tension and suspense to keep me guessing. The characters were complex and interesting. Martha was the only likable character in my opinion. My heart really went out to her for having to put up with such a selfish, toxic mother like Fran. The last few chapters were action-packed and full of twists and turns. Overall, I really liked this book and will read more by this author. If you like thrillers with family drama and dysfunctional families then this is the book for you. Martha, age 24, lives with her mother, Fran, in a remote area of Cornwall. Their home always needs a lot of maintenance. Fran is an illustrator working mostly for her neighbor, Anna, who writes children’s books. Anna has the house next door and Fran rents the one theirs from her. Anna lives in Leeds but comes to Cornwall often and is always willing to help Fran and Martha.
Martha has been working for a vet who recently died of an aneurysm leaving her without a job. Martha has never had any close friends except for one person, Izzy. She met her at a dog show that she went to with her boss. Since then, Martha and Izzy chat often on Messenger.
Fran drinks a lot and is a diabetic which worries Martha. Her father, Greg, left when she was just 9-years-old leaving her devastated. Fran told her that he had died, but she has just learned that Greg is alive and lives a few hours away. Martha is determined to meet him and find out why he left them. But something happens when they meet and she is left terrified. Returning from visiting Greg, she finds Fran in a diabetic coma. She then calls Izzy and she offers to come be with her and help her.
But there is more to this story than Martha knows about. As the truth comes out, she is shocked and overwhelmed as more frightening and dangerous things occur. Where will it end?
This is a well written and very complex mystery with some great characters. I have read this author’s books before and am quite impressed by her. I’m sure readers will love it.

Painful to read. Too drawn out and almost put it down several times. I finished it so I could move on.
It seemed like every character in this book was evil. I read it to the end, but …
It just took a vry long time to gt to the point.
The first two-thirds were slow for me and then all of a sudden it took off. I liked the author’s style and writing, the characters are all unreliable and not very likeable. All in all, a good read.
Great story line about Martha, a young adult whose boss has just died and she is out of a job now. She lives with her alcoholic mum who is an illustrator who is now doing more drinking than working. Martha always wondered why her father left suddenly when she was 9 and they suddenly had to move to where they did not not anyone. Martha’s mother, Fran, suffers a heart attack and little by little Martha realizes that her mother has lied to her over the years about their family dynamics. There are lots of surprises in this book. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this very good book in exchange for an honest review.
Her Mother’s Lies is a book that grabs you from the first chapter to The End.
One lie can snowball. That lie will look like a shattered windshield by the time the lies keep multiplying.
Martha , who at times I wanted to shake and ended up feeling so sorry for her is at the beginning of the lie.
This book has lies, secrets which is not the same as lies, murder and one mixed up family.
Twists and turns keep you turning the pages quickly. I knew I had figured out one part but then wait a page or 2 more twists are coming !!!
How far would you go to protect your family?
A gripping read that you should add to your TBR pile and don’t miss out on Rona Halsall books .
