I enjoyed “Her Midnight Sin” so very much, I just love the way this author writes. Lady Calpurnia Radclyffe is not your typical widow, she actually loves nothing better than to get involved in running the estate, Wyldcombe Grange, and getting down and dirty with the best of them. It’s become her life and when she finds out the estate heir plans on selling it to his best friend, Captain John Nylander, she devises a plan to try to buy it herself…even if it means making a deal with a dastardly pirate!!
I found the story flowed well and there were a few twists and turns to keep it interesting. I loved Callie’s and Nylander’s characters and their interactions with each other.
I was given a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
The first third of the book did not engage my imagination at all. The lead female character Callie is easy to dislike. The lead male character John is honorable and gentlemanly. This story for all intense and purpose appears to be ugly enemies to tentative lovers back to enemies and then back to lovers. The back and forth gave me emotional whiplash. About half way through the book it took a little turn for the better. There are cover ups, sabotage and lies. Danger becomes a concern after Callie strikes a deadly deal with the devil to get what she wants. When John finds out he does all he can to protect her and stay by her side. John has a deep seeded feeling of being unlovable. He was abandoned first by his mother and then at the age of eight he was abandoned by his father. It wasn’t until he was three and thirty that his father explained his twisted logic behind his actions. Luckily for John he grew up with a fine family that treated him like a son. There is so much animosity between Callie and John for most of the book and then by the end they were able to smooth it out. This book could have been far more interesting had it not spent so much time on the snipe comments and focused more on the race to save the Grange and a romance between two tortured souls. I received a free copy of this book via Hidden Gems and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A mismatched pair who despite thinking they have nothing in common fall deeply in love. Sofie Darling writes riveting romance with women who are strong and unapologetic. Callie fulfills all those requirements. Nylander is a principled man. The author weaves a tale of two souls searching for acceptance in a world they believe have rejected them. She slowly turns up the heat and attraction between them as they discover who they really are. She does an incredible job of holding the readers attention as the couple discovers each other and all the secrets are revealed. I especially loved the “I love…” moments.
Her Midnight Sin
A Shadow and Silk book 3
by Sofia Darling
What a captivating story, Callie is the widowed Viscountess St.Alban who after her husbands death is in charge of her home the Grange. Although a difficult task she persevered and made a life for her self. Until an unexpected problem puts her heart, home and livelihood at risk.
John Nylander Captain of The Fortuyn was orphaned as a child, never really having a home, even though he was raised by the St. Alban’s he didn’t quite fit in. Struck by malaria he’s recuperating at the Grange. His luck is about to change and he might just have the chance at acquiring the home he’s always wanted.
A well written story that flowed well. The main characters were likeable and their chemistry was a slow burn. Overall this story was intriguing with many twists and turns. I enjoyed the verbal dialogue, plenty of obstacles were overcome for a well deserved happily ever after.
I received a complimentary copy. This is my honest unbiased opinion.
