Hated it
I listened to the audio book, I really like listening to other voices read the story. I listen while I work and it makes the day fly by. It is a thought provoking idea of the guilt and person has when they are the survivor of a crime. All the what if’s and why’s. Always have enjoyed reading Mary Burton books.
Her Last Word is a book that has a face paced, intense storyline. The police procedural part tells the story of a cold case that has the potential to tie into a current case. It was interesting to me to see how Detective John Adler was able to take a case that had been all but forgotten for so many years and use the clues from that story to bring back to life, working to solve it, and working to use the clues to solve past and present murders.
This is a romantic suspense book with twists and turns that I never saw coming. I loved the different timelines between the present story and Kaitlin’s interviews. Sometimes the storylines didn’t come together when going between the two of them as smoothly as I thought they should but that was part of what happen. The fact that the notes that Kaitlin got did not always match what the police were finding out. The romance part of the story was minimal and I liked that it was not at the front of the storyline. That allowed me to focus on the murders and try to figure out who dun-it. I will say I never guessed correctly.
4.5 I really enjoyed this psychological thriller from Mary Burton. The plot was fantastic. Kaitlin was with her cousin Gina when she was abducted in her high school years. Kaitlin carried the guilt for not saving Gina, for running off. She comes back years later to try and find out once and for all what had taken place. In doing so more murders take place, Kaitlin doesn’t have a great history with the police and things just keep spiraling .” It’s this one, no it’s this person, no, it was this one, wait, its who??? ” My thoughts as I was reading. 🙂 One thing kept me from giving it a “real” 5. and that was the style. I was not a fan of it, and it kept throwing me off. Thank you Montlake, thank you Netgalley and thank you Mary Burton! All opinions are my own, and I highly recommend this book.
Two and a Half
I don’t know how Mary Burton does it but she weaves such a mind blowing, edge of your seat tale!! It all starts with the 14 year old missing person case of Kaitlin’s cousin Gina. Kaitlin returns home hoping to finally found out what happened on that dark country road all of those years ago. What she isnt expecting is that there may be more than one monster hiding in the darkness. With the help of a handsome detective maybe she’ll stay alive long enough to find justice for the victims.
Mary Burton’s new release, HER LAST WORD, is an impossible to put down suspenseful mystery. Great characters and a time line that leads you through the story and keeps you guessing. A must read for all.
Her Last Word by Mary Burton
Cold Case vs Current Case…can stirring up the past bring out a killer…and…if it does…is it the old killer, a serial killer or a new one who will become a serial killer?
This was a tidily plotted story with 30 visits to the past interspersed with happenings in the present that explored murder(s) over a decade ago along with current murders. Kaitlin, cousin to Gina, has a bee in her bonnet to find her cousin – dead or alive – and let her rest. With a podcast in mind Kaitlin interviews many, stirs up past emotions and deals with a few bugaboos of her own.
Kaitlin is all grown up, has a degree, is teaching at the university and has an agenda…will her agenda be met? AND John Adler, recently on the job again after medical leave, is there when an interlinking murder impacts many lives…including Kaitlin’s. How John decides to move forward with his current case while also looking into the past is intriguing.
There are hints, trails, bad guys present and past and a mystery to figure out that left me awake till nearly three in the morning. Need I say more?
