Fast paced, full of twists, great read!
Michael Penmore has given us another exciting story that fills out his Science Consortium Universe. This time, we are introduced to Isabel Rocarion, a gunrunner working both sides of the Earth – Colonial War. She’s no-nonsense and isn’t afraid to tell everyone just what is on her mind. Also in Escape from Rockwall, we are re-introduced to two favorites from Mr. Penmore’s Prox Doom story.
The war is going badly for the colonials and Isabel has arrived just in time… to collect her payment. All she wants is to retire to a nice out of the way colony where she can relax for the rest of her days in comfort. Colonial Leadership has other plans for her. What follows is a, sometimes, chaotic dash to finish this one last job. And to so it, she is forced to become something she is not. A smuggler.
Plots and plans and action aplenty are in store for you. I whole-heartedly recommend this latest adventure cooked up by Michael Penmore. He keeps getting better with every story he publishes.
** Full Disclosure: I was an ARC reader for, and received an ARC of, this story for review purposes. The author requested a review but made no conditions for it. I am writing this review based solely on my enjoyment of this story in particular, and the author’s writing overall. **
Her Last Run 1: Escape From Rockwall was a wonderful, creative, believable escape into a well-created universe.
Now the characters: The protagonists were exceptional! The enjoyment of following them through a well fleshed out staple of SFF (i.e. revolutionaries vs Big Brother) was surprisingly emotionally and intellectually stimulating!
In my opinion the most unique and interesting protagonist was Leon!! With the “feel” of a pet or familiar, he basically kept changing is role and … no spoiler!
Usually, where there are protagonists there are antagonists; however here there are the well-defined “bad guys” and a few not-so-well-defined third group which – even at the second epilogue you’re left to wonder who can be trusted?
I am very much looking forward to Fall of Libertalia, Part 2 of Her Last Run
“War. War never ends. It changes places and rules and ownership.”
Just by the author’s description of the protagonist at the beginning of the book, I fell in love with her, and I knew I’d love this story. She has attitude!
In a galaxy where a
technocratic oligarchy from Earth rules and dominates, the Colonial planets rise up, creating a resistance, with a Colonial Congress, the voice of the oppressed. Isabel is a gunrunner, an independent, with no affiliation, forced in a situation against her will. So commences an intrepid adventure, space fights, running from the enemy, with a cute and unique pet. Heart warming words of John Amicon, a member of the Colonial Congress. I wish we had more people like him in our governments. Fast paced, action packed, with great doses of humour, enigmatic and fun characters, suspicious alliances.. it has been a wonderful ride! I was glued to the book from the start. Looking forward to reading Fall of Libertalia #2!
Love tge cover! This is the first book of a series. It has many moving parts and ends with most of them up in the air. Isabel Rocarion, captain of the old ship, Anvil, is a fascinating but reckless character. The others have major flaws with Rhys being pretty much a basket case. The plot is rather undefined, and the book ends with little resolution. I love science fiction, but most of this book is just not believable.
Gunrunning, space monkeys, and unwanted guests. Fun read with great action.
Isabel runs guns. In space. But the war is ending and she is ready for retirement. Things don’t always go as planned. And escaping may not be easy. Guns don’t complain but the crowd she winds up with are intolerable. And Earthers want her disappearing charmonkey. What’s a girl to do?
Michael Penmore has a developed an entertaining and somewhat disturbing cast of characters. If anything can go wrong, he finds a way to make that happen. So many twists and turns. So many idiots in space. I felt right at home. Quick and satisfying read. Left me wondering what will happen next.
Full of treachery, thrills and action! There’s lots of snark and prickly situations that are so well written it kept me reading well past my bedtime. Will Isabel make her Last Run and get out with her life? I definitely recommend you read it and find out.
