What everyone is saying about Her Last Breath:
“Absolutely breathtaking! Another incredibly intense and thrilling psychological stunner by J.A. Schneider – unputdownable and I never guessed the ending!”– Brenda Telford Reviews
“Just finished, still gasping. Incredibly intense…I’ve read hundreds of books and I never guessed the amazing twist. Just stunning!” – Literati Literature Lovers
“This psychological thriller will send shivers down your spine…raise the hair off your neck. It’s non-stop action and suspense. Character development is terrific. They all come across as normal everyday people …. but are any of them really who .. and what … you think they are?” – Linda Strong Reviews
“Her Last Breath is another twisty, stunning mystery thriller from author J. A. Schneider, where the evidence coils and turns like an eel on a hook. Mari goes from trauma to paranoia and back again, her instincts pushing her towards uncovering the blocked memories that could make or break the case, even as she doubts her senses, her mind, and who she can trust. Husband? Friends? Nobody? It’s a rare pleasure to come across a mystery that’s so hard to guess, and J. A. Schneider’s books have a consistent winning streak on that score. Her plots go from strength to strength.”– J.C. Steel, bestselling author of Fighting Shadows

I did not have high expectations going in to this book, but I was pleasantly surprised. The pacing was excellent and it was a guessing game up to the end as to who the killer was. The author cleverly misdirects you.
JA. Schneider writes incredible psychological fiction. Her Last Breath is no exception. This is my first with introduction to Detective Kerri Blasco, a well-developed character female detective who investigates author Mari Gill’s case. In this high octane thriller, Mari wakes up in a blood-soaked bed next to a dead man she doesn’t know and has never seen before. The man has a knife in his chest. Her prints are on the knife. Mari immediately has an acute asthma attack and is assisted by a male stranger. The story moves quickly and we recognize a vulnerability in Mari anyone in her situation would feel. Her pain, anxiety, fear and confusion are keenly articulated as the reader feels and encounters her angst. Hands down, a well-written thriller with excellent plotting and believable characters. Don’t miss this one or any other JA Schneider novel. I’m a fan! Five stars.
Read it in one sitting 2-3 hrs… gripping…
I give this 3.7 stars. First of all, this book is at times a tense read and I admit I finished in two sittings!
To wake up, not knowing where you are is scary enough….but a dead man next to you…the ultimate scare. Mari is separated from her hubby, Ted, a lawyer. Mari wakes up to a nightmare with a dead man, a strange place and police asking questions.
The infomative and very realistic part is how the police assume guilt and take information and make it fit Mari for the murder. A slam dunk. Which is quite scary to imagine. Jay Patrick, ex-cop and good samaritan tries to help Mari as does her hubby Ted.
Kerri and her partner Alex check the clues their fellow officers had and realize mistakes have been made in the haste to arrest Mari.
The paranoia scenes are perfect…I even started looking at everyone around Mari.
And I had no idea who was the killer.
The thing is, even now, I don’t feel that the reader had enough clues to figure out the identity! I reread parts of the book again, and the hints were so slight, I missed them.
Well written but the happy after ending was too fast, too unreal. That was why I did not give it a higher score.
But it is a good solid read and you’ll be questioning everybody and their motives.
I got hooked on this book right from the start and was surprised with the ending. I did not figure out who the murderer was although it was obvious someone was setting Mari up. I hope to find more books by this author and highly recommend this one if you enjoy a good mystery. She has a series of standalone thrillers with the same cops as are in this one.
It was a roller coaster ride for Mari. But she survived in the end.
