After my parents were killed by vamps, my uncle took an early retirement from his life as a Hunter to raise me. I grew up training for battles he hoped I’d never fight.Until the night my school dance sucks, and he takes me out for ice cream after. When the screaming starts, my chocolate-chip-cookie-dough cone splatters on the street. My uncle and I race to help. An hour later, I’m covered in his … I’m covered in his blood, shell-shocked, being loaded in a police car for a crime I could never commit.
The Hunters’ Academy rescues me.
Or maybe imprisons me.
The details are a little dicey, and the men training me—handsome Cade and cruel, cold, perfect Nix—try to avoid the subject.
But nothing matters to me now except getting revenge.
I know I’ll make those responsible for my uncle’s death pay. But after my revenge, how will I go on with life, now that the last person who loved me is dead?
Will I be able to come back to the academy and create a new family, find a new home? Or will I have destroyed my chance here?
I’ll think about that tomorrow. Today, I’m out for blood.
Her Kind Of Magic is a reverse harem romance and book 1 in the Academy of Supernatural trilogy, about the academy where Hunters train to face the geists and vamps.

4 stars for Her Kind of Magic by May Dawson . This is book one in the Academy of Supernatural series. This is a paranormal Reverse Harem. Deidre has known about the supernatural her whole life. However, after horrible night she learns everything may not be what it seems. She is taken to the Academy of the Supernatural. Deidre is a strong heroine , while also showing that vulnerable side at points. Another thing I love about Deidre is that while she is a bada** , she still shows her flaws. I love this. Tristin, Nix, and Cade are creating this push and pull with Deidre. “When you love someone, when you trust them, you give them a piece of yourself. Maybe you never get it back. Even if they weren’t worthy, or if they die, there’s still that chunk of you that goes with them. But we’re not to stay whole either. We’re meant to live in pieces.” I am loving this story and all the characters. It is intense and filled with strong emotions. This was something that May Dawson is amazing at. Looking forward to reading the next book.
An exciting adventure as described in the description and in the reviews. The story moves along quickly with lots of action, secrets, sexual tension (though confined to a few kisses and fantasies), and the efforts of a misfit, badass, 18-year-old martial arts blackbelt to get revenge on those who killed her parents and uncle. This may not be a story for everyone, but I certainly enjoyed it and will continue with His Dangerous Ways: An Academy of Demon Hunters and Angels Reverse Harem Romance (Academy of the Supernatural Book 2).
This book surprised me. I figured it would be enjoyable but I didn’t think I would be so hooked so soon in the book. Worth the read!
This book was fantastic. It drew me in from the very beginning and got straight to the action. I cannot wait to read on to find out what happens with Deidra and the guys or better yet Nix as they go on the run.
An amazing start to her Academy of the Supernatural series
Deidra, a seemingly normal high school senior, gets thrown for a loop the night of the homecoming dance. As the story progresses she suffers through many changes, has a few surprises, and must come to grips with everything if she hopes to survive her new normal. May Dawson’s Her Kind of Magic is an amazing start to her Academy of the Supernatural series. I am definitely going to go check out her other series.
I received a free copy of the book from the author. I had the opportunity to review or not.
Her Kind of Magic is the third book I have read by Dawson and I have to say I am enamored by her writing. She definitely knows how to capture reader attention and create an atmosphere of suspense, mystery, and teases of sexual tension that flow throughout the entire story. I was hooked from the beginning of this book and struggled to put it down when my eyes were closing – then I picked it right back up as quickly as I could the next day to finish. It is the start of a fantastically charming and engaging new series.
I enjoyed all the characters in this book and their unique personalities. They each display strengths and weaknesses that draw you to them and keep you invested in their journey and they complement each other well. The conversations, actions, and emotions feel genuine, the storyline is fascinating, flows well and moves at a fast pace and the suspense and tension seep through the pages as they turn. Deidra, Nix, Tristan, and Cade – all amazing! No way to pick a favorite.
This is an academy read, and the characters are late teens, early twenties and there is a slight bully element (it does not last long for those who do not enjoy these kinds of stories; they are not my favorite, I tend to avoid them, but I did alright with this one – the way it was written). This story also is a medium burn reverse harem that includes sexual content. There is also plenty of action, intrigue, snark, mystery, angst, emotional conflict, sweet times, sexy times, and danger. Basically it is a well-rounded book with a bit of everything to enjoy. This also ends with a cliffhanger that will have you reaching for the second book (which I did, immediately) to see what happens next.
An action packed story! Starts with a bang. Ends with a bang. Never lets up all the way through! Deidra is a complete powerhouse even though she doesn’t realize it yet. Monster fights. A vengeful witch. What more do you need? This was completely awesome!
I really like Diedre’s character. She has a lot thrown at her all at once but doesn’t quit. When her Uncle Liam is killed she finds out she has magic. Someone is after her and will kill to get to her. This book has lots of action. I found it intriguing and didn’t want to stop reading. There are some big surprises at the end of the book. I really like Cad, Nix and Trystan to. I am excited to read more and see what happens with them.
*Spoiler Alert*
Deidra’s (FMC) parents have both been killed when she was young in this book and on the night of her homecoming dance her uncle is killed too. Deidra lets rip unknown magic that kills her uncles attackers and brings her to the attention of Cade & Nix. Who are hunters and part of the Hunters Academy. Where Deidra is taken to train. A school full of secrets and truths which slowly get uncovered during the course of the book. Its one of a joyride of a read. Just fantastic!
This has taken over as my Favourite May Dawson Book to date. I also think that I am becoming a closet Academy fan and especially like the books that are aimed at the older YA and above.
This book has characters in their 20’s and sexual content. The characters are quite complex and have a lot of depth and bounce off each other so well.
I love Deidra who is snarky rather than sassy – she has suddenly found the world as she know it falling apart, her Uncle is killed in front of her, she is suddenly whisked off to an academy for Hunters only to find out that her heritage isn’t what she thought. She is instantly attracted to the person who initially abducted her to the academy but who also takes care of her during her first few days, but also is attracted to his brother and another instructor. Attraction – not love which is refreshing.
I think she copes with her uncles funeral well although you can see she is holding a lot of her emotions in because she cant afford to have a melt down if she want to survive. Having a meltdown could kill people if her magic goes wild and the control of her magic is closely linked with her emotions.
There is a lot of angst as the 2 instructors try to ignore/hide their feelings (not very successfully sometimes) and remain professional but we do know that they care and there are a few delicious moments when emotions rule the brain.
The plot is amazing, different to a lot of similar books which makes this one stands out head and shoulder above a lot of other academy books and also has the most fantastic characters. There is intrigue, mystery, laughter, tears, suspense and an overall need to know what happens next.
