This was such a great story and definitely one that I will read again. Grace’s storytelling gets better and better with each book and I didn’t think anyone could rival my affections for her mafia men but Alyce and Dixon stole my heart.
I loved the dynamic between both of the characters, one fiercely independent and determined, albeit a little accident prone (Alyce) and the other (Dixon) the shell of a man he once was due to PTSD. Together you have the perfect partnership though and Alyce supports Dixon and helps him to face his demons.
There is a mixed bag of side characters also included in the book who add a little extra drama to complement the story.
I really struggled to put this book down – highly recommended.
5.0 out of 5 stars
ptsd, relationships, frenemies and hot sex – tons of stuff in a compact package
do not read this book if you don’t like steamy erotica – the sex seems mind blowing, and well enjoyed by the participating parties
if you are a bit of a voyuer, you might feel right at home, because the insights into these power packed issues are very up close and personal.
awesome again!
Working in the billing and insurance office at a dental practice pays the bills, but Alyce’s job calls for more than paperwork. All employees are expected to volunteer every month to give back to the community. Sounds great, but Alyce doesn’t seem to fit in well with the places she’s tried to help out at, mostly because of her big mouth. Her last resort is with a group that helps veterans get back on their feet and she hopes her tough love approach will be just what the doctor ordered.
Dixon has been scarred, literally and figuratively, by his time in the military. He’s jaded, angry, and struggles with PTSD. He’s scared off every other volunteer, making him the biggest challenge the group has ever seen, but he meets his match with Alyce, who doesn’t take any nonsense off anyone and isn’t scared of a man with a few sharp edges.
As Dixon tries to stonewall, insult, and ignore Alyce into quitting, she only digs in her heels and tells him where to put it. When two strong willed, sharp tongued people are forced together, something’s bound to happen…but your money should be on Alyce coming out on top.
Firstly, I adored Alyce. She’s funny, sassy, and so human, she might be a real person. The stuff that comes out of her mouth is so natural and relatable, you can instantly get into her head, which is a wild place to be.
The relationship between Dixon and Alyce was a slow build, rising from some anger-tinted ashes to turn into something hot and passionate. The rawness with how they communicated and interacted with each other had a good insight to some of the ways PTSD affects relationships. In fact, I thought how Risata approached the topic of PTSD was tasteful and informative. She didn’t “fetishize” the thought of a woman fixing a man how some authors do, which says a lot about how she tackles difficult topics in her work.
Overall, I found this book funny, heartwarming, and hotter than hell.
Have you ever wanted to re-read a book as soon as you reached the end? That’s this book!! I fell in love with Alyce (with a “y” instead of an “i” because she’s unique like that) in the first chapter. She’s snarky and certainly unique!! Dixon took some getting used to, but Alyce likes a challenge. When faced with the possibility of losing your job, what’s a girl, sorry, woman to do after all?
This is the best story! This book has all the feels in it. There’s humor, frustration, angst, anger, heartache, hope, joy and love. Dixon and Alyce have strong, interesting personalities, and the supporting characters are perfect. The PTSD storyline was handled with sensitivity and compassion. The emotions Alyce portrays concerning the prejudices she encounters are realistic and empathetic.
This is a wonderfully engaging tale. It has a great plot with well-developed characterization and just the right mix of drama, hot romance and strong emotions throughout the book. The narrative flows easily, effortlessly pulling you into the lives of the characters. Once you start reading you will find it hard to put down. I highly recommend this as an extremely enjoyable must read!!
