In the tradition of Gone Girl and Behind Closed Doors comes a gripping, twisted, furiously clever read that demands your attention, and keeps you guessing until the very end. For fans of the anti-heroine and stories told in unorthodox ways, Her delivers us the perfect dark and provocative villain. The only question–who is it? “After four, I quit counting. What’s the point if you know it isn’t … counting. What’s the point if you know it isn’t going to stop?”
Sadie is jealous. Why wouldn’t she be? Her life is falling apart. Meanwhile, her new neighbor is everything she is not.
Ann is perfect–the kind of woman everyone loves to hate–and a best friend to die for. She hosts over-the-top dinner parties, takes parenting to an entirely different level, and makes ambition look sexy as hell.
Sadie learns quick: the best way to cure jealousy is to befriend it. She also learns there’s more to her new friend than meets the eye. She’s patient, she’s kind, and possibly a serial killer.
It isn’t until Ann’s proclivities hit a little too close to home that Sadie has to ask herself how much she’s willing to overlook in the name of getting what she wants.
Exquisitely paced, Her is an unnerving and electrifying psychological thriller about jealousy, passion, and the dangerous places desire can take you. Full of enough tension and twists to make even the most seasoned suspense reader break out in a cold sweat, it keeps you guessing until the very last page.

This story had me wishing I could read faster! OMG!!! The head games that go on in this story is un-ending! And it on both sides of the story, not just one sided. Can Sadie get her act together before Ann decides she doesn’t need her “best friend” anymore? What really is going on with Ann? Is she completely nuts or a genius? Lots of things to think about with this book. I LOVED it! It is written as only Britney King can do…..makes you question everything and anything that goes on in the story. I would give this ten stars if I could! I voluntarily read a free copy of this book.
Her is one twisty psychological read! Awesome characters some you like some you don’t, some have hidden things going on in their lives you would never know or even believe. I could not put this book down and once I was done I had to sit and say “Holy crap”!!! I can tell you this is one of those books that stick with you and you think about it and still come out with “WOW, no way”. What an awesome story and twisted ending! Loved this book! Thank you Britney King for supplying us with another of your books, not sure what you have running around upstairs in your head but I’ve got to say I hope you never lose it and I will be waiting and watching for your next book!

Dang son! HER: A Psychological Thriller by Britney King might just be this author’s craziest, darkest, twistiest book yet!
What it’s about: Sadie is jealous of her neighbor Ann who seems to have it all while Sadie’s life is falling apart around her. She decides that the best way to treat her jealousy is by befriending Ann. But there is more to Ann than meets the eye, plus she seems like she might be a… serial killer? As their relationship deepens, Sadie begins to wonder just how far she will go to get the things she wants, and what the cost will be.
I will not lie to you, HER is very DARK, and very DISTURBING, plus there is an addition of a couple lesbian scenes that may not be for everyone. Luckily for the readers, Britney King has a wonderful way of writing where things aren’t too descriptive but you still know what is going on. Key words being: too descriptive. This isn’t a romance novel after all, it is a thriller, and psychological thriller it sure is!
The viewpoints switch mostly between Sadie and “her” although you don’t know for sure who exactly ‘her’ is until later on. I had a couple guesses and while I was right about something, I was wrong on another. I love what King did with the ‘her’ part of the novel and it kinda throws you for a loop.
Once again, HER is one of those addictive, can’t put down, watch the train wreck, devour in a day type of books. It’s pretty short at just under 300 pages and I was able to read it in a little over 3.5 hours. The pages go quick, and I honestly have come to expect nothing less from the lovely Britney King. This is also a standalone novel! While it does mention New Hope and Instalook a bit, the story is all it’s own and not specifically related to the New Hope novels.
Final Thought: If you are unable to handle triggers or dark thrillers, I wouldn’t recommend reading HER. But if you love dark, disturbing novels that will shake you to the core you should DEFINITELY read this. The plot and characters are well developed, and HER is my favorite book by this author yet!
Sadie’s life is in shambles, her husband left her and she is suffering from depression. Ann is the perfect woman, wife, mother and neighbour. This is a well written story which is dark, intense, raw, gritty, twisted, and filled with suspense, revenge, passion and unexpected surprises. This is a well written flawless psychological thriller, and I was totally captivated throughout this addictive page turner, and I cannot wait to read more from this exceedingly talented author whose work I recommend for all.
Sadie meets “her”. the woman who lives down the street and is in awe. Ann is an author of some self help books, has social media accounts. But more than that she is the kind of woman that everyone loves ..and hates.
Sadie decides that she wants Ann’s life … her perfect children, her perfect husband, the one who gives perfect dinner parties, the one everyone wants for a best friend.
It seems like it’s Sadie’s good fortune … Ann has indicated that she and Sadie would be good friends.
But what Ann doesn’t tell Sadie is that there is a consequence for being her friend. Sadie will have to decide how much she can live with in order to remain friends.
Told almost entirely by Sadie, there are many twists and turns that keep the reader glued to each and every page. I wouldn’t call it highly suspenseful, but there’s enough tension in wanting to know what is going to happen next.
The characters, especially Ann, were not what I expected and the ending was quite a surprise.
Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
“Every love affair has its rituals – and you always kill what you love in the end.” In some relationships, this is a figurative statement. In others, it is the literal truth. HER by Britney King is a scintillating tour de force psychological thriller that rings all of the bells that readers of her previous novels have come to expect, but she raises the bar set by her earlier novels to an even higher level.
HER is basically a tale of two women. Ann appears to be the perfect woman that all other women aspire to be but know that she is out of their league. Ann is beautiful, sexy, an accomplished author of self-help books, a psychotherapist, affluent, happily married to a surgeon, a doting mother, renown for hosting fabulous dinner parties, the kind of friend that everyone wants to have. Ann is also self-centered, duplicitous, tempestuous, mercurial and prone to go from calm and serene to maniacal in a nanosecond. Sadie is, on the surface, the diametric opposite of Ann. Sadie is going through a rough patch in her life. Her husband has left her, she is unemployed, she has gained weight and does not have stylish clothes. She has become rather reclusive and spends most of her time cloistered in her house watching the activities of her neighbors, especially Ann. Sadie is also a far more complex, competitive and passionate woman than she appears to be on the surface. For both Ann and Sadie, perception is not reality. And at their core, Ann and Sadie are actually more similar than they are different.
As is her hallmark, Britney King is masterful in her character development of both Ann and Sadie. Another aspect of writing at which Britney King is brilliant is pacing. Rather like a talented stripper, Ms. King teasingly and tantalizingly slowly reveals the true nature of her characters and then lets the plot simmer until it becomes more delicious. And then she quickens the pace and the action to breakneck speed in the final chapters of the book which are filled with more twists, turns and switchbacks than Route de la Trace in Martinique!
HER is gripping in its intensity and its induction of vivid mental images. The ending was surprising and unexpected. There were several times that I thought, “whoa, I didn’t see that coming”! Obviously, I can’t provide examples in my review because that would be a “spoiler” for future readers. HER has everything and more that readers look for in a top-quality psychological thriller.
HER is filled with emotions: jealousy, envy, avarice, love, lust, passion, sexual desire, hatred, and especially revenge. HER is also filled with brilliant quotations, words of wisdom and insight into the human condition.
If you are not a regular reader of Britney King’s novels, you will be after reading HER. I said in my review of her previous book, “Speak of the Devil” that it was her best book yet. While that was true then, it is now true now. HER is even better! If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would!
I received an uncorrected advanced reading copy (ARC) directly from the author in return for an honest review. My review is provided voluntarily.
