A hit-and-run murder unearths a case of mistaken identity in this “well-bred, well written and genuinely superior” mystery by the Diamond Dagger winner (Kirkus Reviews). Early one morning in the quiet English village of Larking, the body of a woman named Mrs. Jenkins is found in the road. Miles away, her daughter, Henrietta, receives the bad news while working in the university library. Poor Mrs. … the university library. Poor Mrs. Jenkins appears to have been the victim of a horrible car accident.
When an autopsy proves not only that this was no accident but also that Mrs. Jenkins had never had a child, young Henrietta’s life is thrown upside down. If she’s not Mrs. Jenkins’s daughter, then who is she? It’s up to Detective Inspector C. D. Sloan of the Calleshire police force to bring the murderer to justice—and a sense of order back to Henrietta’s life.
Proclaimed by the New York Times in 1968 to be one of the year’s best books, Henrietta Who? is a first-order English whodunit that’ll keep you guessing until the end.

Love DSI Sloane and his second, the dense but not entirely hopeless assistant Crosby. But I’ve come to love Sloane’s supervisor, Commander Leyes as well. Every book in the series so far has been a delight.
I found this an unusual whodunnit with interesting characters and an intriguing setting. The author me at: “If she’s not my mother, who am I?”
Heartbreaking. Ending is stupid.
I had trouble getting into this book. At first a zero star , but by the end a 3 star.
Beautifully written. A joy to read.
Pretentious prolix bore
Well designed and written mystery by a tried and true author
This was a well-written example of a British mystery set in a small village. Lots of twists and turns, that were, if not unpredictable, entirely believable. The characters were people just trying to figure things out, and they finally did. A very satisfying ending, and a truly engaging read.
If you enjoy the British mystery series Midsomer Murder on PBS you’ll like this book.
I enjoy this series very much. Though Det Crosby is always made fun of slightly yet he occasionally says something really true and useful. And Inspector Sloan is such a lovely man, I like his relationship with his wife and daughter. A thoroughly nice family.
You have to work your way through a twisty mystery reforestation getting to a end that leaves you wanting more justice for Henrietta. A villain is caught and arrested it what happens to our heroine?
I always enjoy Catherine Aird’s mysteries. They are well plotted and read quickly. And as with most of them, “Henrietta Who?” keeps the reader guessing until the final chapter.
Kept my attention. Did follow same who done it
I enjoy an easy ready especially when in about other countries.
This was a new author to me. She reminds me of Agatha Christie who is one of my favorite mystery writers. Definitely will read more of this author.
Ms. Aird’s books are always interesting, well-plotted and fun.
I have enjoyed each book I’ve read in this series!
This is an English procedural very much reminiscent of Midsomer Murders. I did like it even though it is not my usual fare. I will probably not read others by the same author, but it had an interesting plot.
Catherine is a new author to me but I will definitely be reading more of her books as I enjoyed Henrietta Who so much.
Catherine Aird’s books are similar to Agatha Christie’s at her best. I love allher books!
