Hemlock and Hedge (The Witches of Wormwood #0.5), my thirty-first read from author Ruby Loren and the first in her new series (obviously I enjoy her writing). I can’t help but be amazed by the sheer volume of good writing she can produce with multiple settings & characters. I’ll read more by her in the future and look forward to her next work. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
Hazel Salem is back in Wormwood after the
death of her mother who claimed she was a
witch.
Hazel finds a box on her doorstep. There are
two black kitten inside. She wasn’t inclined to
have a cat….let alone two. But they grew on
her.
The one cat will be influential in helping her
solve a mystery left to her by her mother and
save her from her enemies.
Come alone with Hazel to meet up with the
two black kittens, Hemlock and Hedge
Fun prequel to an intense series.
Backstory to several of the major players.
Much more murder mystery and mayhem ahead!
Great little story. Wonderful introduction to Hazel and Wormwood. As I was reading through this story, I could see and feel the environment around Hazel. When Hemlock introduces himself, the craziness of Hazel’s life is confirmed. Wormwood seems to be filled with many mysteries. I look forward to learning more. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.
I received a copy of this book as a gift. I am leaving my honest review.
Poor Hazel Salem, she comes from a long line of witches, but is a disappointment to the family as she doesn’t seem to have the power herself. It doesn’t really matter to her as she doesn’t believe in magic and all that hocus-pocus stuff. She has just inherited her mother’s estate and discovers she must take over her mom’s apothecary shop.
As she is finding her way around the shop and trying to make it her own, two black kittens arrive at her door. She soon discovers that one (Hemlock) is her familiar and can talk to her; the other (Hedge) appears to be just an average cat. When a mystery of the paternal kind falls at her feet, Hazel finds herself immersed in finding the truth.
This is a short story (prequel) to a new paranormal series. It is a great introduction to the new series and you get to learn a lot about all the Wormwood townsfolk. The story is written with wit, lots of flair, and a ton of interesting characters. I can’t wait to find out what happens with Hazel and her witchy discovery.
Hemlock And Hedge, author Ruby Loren’s fabulous prequel to her The Witches Of Wormwood series, seemed an unusual book title at first but quickly made sense as Loren’s cozy mystery unfolded.
Loved the character’s and found the author’s usage of “interviewing” the resident’s of Wormwood as part of the story a great way for her readers to become familiar with the series’ characters.
Looking forward to the upcoming release of the next book in what appears will be a 5 book cozy mystery series – Mandrake And A Murder. Highly recommend you grab a copy of Hemlock And Hedge for a delightful quick introduction to Hazel Salem – Wormwood’s newest sleuth!
Hemlock and Hedge is the prequel to Ruby Loren’s newest series. This is a short, intriguing, paranormal mystery. The reader is introduced to the town of Wormwood, many of its quirky inhabitants, our sleuth, apothecary inheriting, witch-in-training, Hazel Salem. A box containing two black cats is left on Hazel doorstep. Later we learn that Hemlock is Hazel’s familiar. This is a well written introduction to this new series.
Great start to a new series. Wormwood is a strange town with strange residents. Hazel Salem has come back to Wormwood to run her mother’s apothecary. She is just finding out that she is a witch and is unsure that it even entails. It will be interesting to see what happens in future stories. A very entertaining and fun book. You will love the characters and see the foundation for future events. Cannot wait to see more of Wormwood and its inhabitants.
