This is the book to start you on your journey through an amazing world that Mike Mignola created. I cannot stress how much I love it. The only downside with it is that I wanted more in this issue, but across the decades I’ve been following his universe he has delivered more than I could have dreamed.
I’ve always wanted to read Hellboy. Just have never had the money to invest in the comic series that I wasn’t sure I would like. But I watched the movies and absolutely loved them both and wish there was a third. Although I think I read they are rebooting it.
Anyway, back to the comic. I can’t say that I’m a big fan of the artwork, that is probably the main reason why I never bit the bullet and bought the comics. But it’s adequate and does its job. But the story line behind the series is where it is very interesting. This was just issue one so it really didn’t get too in depth but I have to say I am hooked. I will be reading the next few issues as well and will be reviewing them shortly.
I do have to say that the movie has rose tinted my glasses about the comic. The actual comic hasn’t really gotten into much detail about Hellboy or any of the characters yet. We really don’t know much of anything in this first issue as of yet. It basically just goes into Hellboy’s creation (briefly) and the Nazi’s who summoned him and then it ends.
Issue 2, Hellboy and his team visit Mrs. Cavendish who financed the mysterious expedition that Hellboy’s father went on to the Arctic (or was it the Antarctic?). He came home with no memory of what happened and the only survivor. So Hellboy and his companions go to visit her and find out more about the expedition.
In this issue we are introduced to Hellboy’s two companions Abe Sapien and Liz Sherman with very brief backgrounds of them.
As they arrive things seem a bit off. As they are shown their rooms they realize that something isn’t quite right and set about finding out what it is.
In Hellboy: Seed of Destruction #3, Hellboy meets the man behind his arrival on this planet and the guy who is trying to destroy the planet by releasing 7 demon/squid things on the Earth.
Abe is missing, Liz has been captured and the bad guy is chanting. It’s time for Hellboy to do something, and do something is what he does best. Can Hellboy beat the bad guy and his minions before time runs out?
Hellboy is in a fight for his life, he is barely clinging to consciousness while the bad guy continues to mumble his incantation in the background. Sven is slowly beating Hellboy and Hellboy’s own game of who can punch harder, and who has a harder skull. Liz is in a trance and being used to channel her internal power into the evil beast so it can grow. Abe is lost in the dungeon of the mansion and is overtaken by an unknown force.
By the end Hellboy looks the worse for wear, Liz is by his side and Abe intervened at just the right moment, or did he? Either way, the day is won and the rubble that was once a mansion means Hellboy was here.
