Note: the series ends on a cliffhanger in Book 4. Continuing from Queen of Clockwork (Kingdom of Fairytales Alice in Wonderland Book 1), which really should be read first, Alice tracks down Raven, the vampire who has been in her dreams. He is a Milliner, handsome, attentive, dangerous, and Alice is strangely attracted to him. He promises to help her solve the puzzle that is frustrating her. Alice finally finds the White Rabbit, another piece to the puzzle.
Life is slowly turning around for Ivy, and reality starts to show up its ugly face. The Pinnacle is still a mystery, and now another puzzle piece emerges – the blood stored in blood banks for the vampires is insufficient despite the crowds of people coming to donate every day. Nevertheless, the biggest twist in Ivy’s life is probably meeting Raven, mysterious, charming man.. and a vampire himself. She can’t ignore the attraction, but what could it do to her friendship with Chesh? And how can she even think of romance when her own sister Pearl got attacked and injured? When Raven shows Ivy the other face of the Forge, she realizes something has to be done, but would Alice listen?
The spinoff of Alice of Wonderland continues in magical and romantic way, spiced with Ivy’s knack for machines and the creative inventions of the steampunk world. Ivy gets through a little harsh wake-up from her bubble, seeing the poor and ugly people trying to survive, living in poverty for non-compliance with the beauty standards. Raven enters the story as a very interesting character, conflicted himself, and brings the ‘madness’ of the story to a whole new level. I enjoy the personal and relationship challenges that emerge, and now the curiosity aims at Ivy – what she’ll decide to do, and where her heart lies.
Ivy has a few answers but still so many questions. I love the references to Wonderland. I did a painting series in college based on “Through the Looking Glass” and Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland” so it’s been fun see some of the references in this book.
Book 1 introduced the beautiful kingdom of Forge which places highest priority on esthetics; book 2 peels back the veneer to reveal what lies beneath the perfect image presented to the kingdom. Hints were there, but this book really explores the ugly results of policies favoring beauty above all (hint it’s not the people). It seems nothing in The Forge is quite as it seemed and with the tick tick ticking is is possible the Red Queen is still around?
This book delves into social justice issues, but not in a heavy handed way. As Ivy gains an education there also seems to be a bit of romance brewing – maybe more than one romance from a comment Pearl dropped. Wonderland references continue to be wrapped into the story in a delightful way.
If you have been reading along in the Kingdom of Fairytales, you might recognize a golden eyes visitor from another kingdom who makes a visit. This book ends on a bit of a cliff hanger – as expected. Book 2 of 4 in the arc these short exciting reads are a great way to fill an afternoon!
Ivy has more questions then answers. The townsfolk are uprising and trust in the mysterious man is not easy to give.
Heiress of Delusion is the second book in the Alice in Wonderland arc by J.A. Armitage and Zara Quentin.
Ivy now knows the name of the stranger, but Raven still remains mysterious. The death Queen of Heart followers are becomming more and more present and are rallying to go after the president, Alice. The vampire knows more than he’s telling Ivy. But to go deeper into whats going on in the city, might put Ivy in real danger.
I have loved this book and can wait to read the next one. I have received an arc of this book from the authors.
