Not Annie Mac and certainly not that boy of hers. But then comes the town of Beaufort, with Lieutenant Clay Dougherty in the lead, ready to do what it takes. Whatever that is. As a Kirkus reviewer … ready to do what it takes. Whatever that is.
As a Kirkus reviewer said: “… the book’s strengths lie in its suspense and vivid characters, whose personalities and small-town relationships are truly believable….” Barbara Davis wrote: “A deep and lovely story about the unshakable bonds of friendship and the healing power of love.”
From the author of BECALMED comes this latest tale of the Carolina coast, introducing some new characters to love–and to loathe. “A wonderful voice in Southern women’s fiction.” B. Claypole White.

Very good read. The only thing I didn’t like was it was book 2 in a series and I have not read book 1 and I felt a little lost in the subplot of a few characters that were obviously important in book one.
Anne Mac’s struggles with bad marriage and two small children. Great story. Can’t say anything else or I’d give the story away . Thank you.
I enjoyed this book enormously. It has a little bit of everything in it, adventure, romance, mystery and love. Great characters and storyline.
Super great book!!!
Believable characters and enough twists to keep you challenged. Approach to finding the villain is most appealing. Good Read
I very much recommend this book. I found the characters and relationships believable and representative of real situations. Domestic abuse happens too often and it affects so many people. This book deals with the subject well.
Keeps you on edge. The villian is so heartless and keeps eluding the police. Not the ending you want but leaves you hoping.
Love this series
Story revolves around small community that rallies around an abused wife and mother ad her two children. Graphic descriptions of her abuse and recovery and her sad life. Also the people who become her friends and support he,r unlike her own family. You cringe, cry and rejoice when the abuser is finally put out of the picture. Romance revolves around mother and police who comes to her rescue.
A well written story about abusive relationship and the difficulty of leaving this way of life. It took courage on Annie Mac’s part to break away from this relationships and fight to improve her life along with her children. Very compelling story with a lot of emotion. Highly recommend.
Favorite Quotes:
“Maybe she wasn’t qualified, maybe she couldn’t do much, but the folk wielding power would have to flatten her if they wanted to pawn Ty and Katie off on Social Services.”
“I think that’s what we all want more than anything else in the world. To belong to someone. And to have someone who belongs to us.”
“… he’d done the gene pool a huge favor by eliminating someone so dumb. Daddy always said there weren’t room enough in the world for all the fools inhabiting it.”
“This time platitudes wouldn’t work either. If she’d heard them once during and after her pregnancies, she’d heard them a dozen times. ‘They’re in heaven. God much have needed them more than you and Matt. It wasn’t meant to be.’ If she’d believed that about God, she’d have signed up for atheism so fast necks would have snapped.”

My Review:
Five Stars is not a high enough rating for this marvelous book – quality writing of this caliber calls for at least a double rating of 10. It was breathtaking. I adored every sentence of this meticulously crafted story, and there was not a wasted word on the 403 superbly written pages. The narrative was so descriptive and enthralling, I could hear the dog’s bark, see and feel the lightning in the sky, and smell the water in the bay. Ms. Fischer’s characters are appealing, knowable, clever, enticing, and expertly developed and detailed. The story was deeply moving if not intoxicating, with numerous tragedies and losses that fathomed my emotions in a manner that had me in tears several times – a remarkable achievement given my rather cold heart. I ached for the little boy most of all, denied a childhood, yet ever insightful, aware, and protective of his family. But my favorite character proved to be the unexpectedly complex policeman with a penchant for the finer things and excellent tastes in food, creature comforts, music, and the soft touches and kindnesses that were exactly what these broken people were in dire need of. Heavy Weather is my first Normandie Fischer read, but it certainly will not be my last. I hope she is busy working on a sequel as I am already in need of a return visit to Beaufort.
I loved this story! It made me want to keep reading to see what happened to these characters that I came to care about so much. The writing is so well done and the characters introduced so well and engaged thoroughly throughout the book. I felt invested in them to where I cared about what happened to them. I loved this story so much!!
I could not put this book down. It was absolutely wonderful. I loved it.
Enjoyed reading it. Interesting characters, clever plot.
At first you think you know what is going to happen, but you’ll change your mind about 1/2 way through.
This seemed like “old-fashioned” writing & I just couldn’t get into it. Plus the author started introducing many new characters by chapter 9, so I couldn’t keep up. And there was just a bit too much hinting at sexual things that I didn’t care for.
Not for me.
