This was a very intriguing book. Susan is a suffragist and Susan wants to learn what happened to her great-aunt. Julian is a newspaper man looking for a tantalizing story. Susan teams up with Julian to keep an eye on him to make sure he won’t make up a story about her great-aunt. What Julian and Susan find is a tragic ending to her great-aunt’s life, a few ghosts and love.
Susanna Clement is a young lady from New Mexico visiting her family in Maine where the story takes Place. Susanna is fascinated with the disappearance of her Great Aunt Magdalena Bondurant forty years before. She thought that her Aunt was helping with the Underground Railroad before her disappearance. Her family keeps Magdalena a huge family secret and they will not give her any information. Julian Kittrick is a Journalist that lives in Denver. He was on a story about Magdalena that perhaps she had stolen some missing Jewels and took off and lived a secret life. Julian was orphaned as a child and that has shaped who he became as an adult. His parents are mentioned a lot is why I mention this. Although his life start was not the same as he imagined it was neither one understand each other and don’t realize they both have somewhat of a similar background. Most of the story the two are working together to solve the mystery of Magdalena and they do it.
I thought it had some interesting things in the story line that I would not usually enjoy in this kind of story like ghosts. There was a lot of misunderstandings and issues between the main characters but it ended well. I was able to read this book in one day but I do read fast. I did not want to put it down. I will check out some other books from this author.

And the Truth Shall Set Them Free
Set in Maine of 1895, Heaven’s Promise by Rachel Wilson is a love story of a couple separated by death forty years prior, and the young couple brought together by the mystery that surrounds the event. As Susanna Clement and Julian Kittrick reluctantly join forces in an attempt to find truth, many secrets from the past and in the present are revealed with the help of a flamboyant ghost.
I am having trouble writing a review about this book. On the one hand, I liked some parts, and yet some parts were not believable for the time period. I also am not a fan of angst and bickering, which was abundant between Susanna and Julian. Don’t get me wrong, there were some sweet and tender parts, and the ending was happy, but at times the journey felt tedious.
Content alert: Although this book is free of vulgarities, it does contain detailed sexual intimacies.

I do not normally read or enjoy ghost stories, but Heaven’s Promise was definitely an exception to my rule! A well-written story with a mournful, dramatic ghost made for entertaining reading. Susanna and Julian’s initial meeting did not go well, especially when Susanna finds out that they are on the opposite ends of the spectrum of the same quest. Susanna wants to find out what happened to her great-aunt and to reveal her heroic efforts in the Underground Railroad, whilst Julian wants to expose her as a woman of loose morals and a fraud. What they do have in common, however, is to find the truth. Susanna is a feisty young woman who believes that women should have the same rights as men, but who is singularly naive in the ways of the world. Julian in a wanna-be newspaperman, who has seen more than his fair share of trouble and he is attempting to be a man about town. Together they make for a combustible couple, especially as Julian takes great delight in teasing Susanna and laughing at her. He’s not so happy when the tables are turned and he finds himself in a situation where Susanna can take her mirth out on him. The story is well written and the characters are delightful – even the ghosts. The novel concludes with a suspenseful and somewhat macabre ending, but the closing chapters did being relief and tears to my eyes as the ghosts finally find their rest.
