An ancient secret. A ruthless enemy. A deadly choice.
With a warrant out for his arrest and a price on his head, Willem Jaantzen has gone to ground, but he and his crew aren’t out of the game. If they’re going to take down an opponent as powerful as a Chief Justice they need a bulletproof plan—and that’s going to take time. But as their rival’s net tightens around them, time is the one thing … thing Jaantzen and his crew don’t have.
Jaantzen and the people he cares for most are caught in a dance with a vicious, tenacious hunter. And his goddaughter Starla is about to head out on her own on an adventure that could shake the foundations of human understanding—if it doesn’t get her killed first.
The Bulari Saga series is part of Jessie Kwak’s Durga System universe, a fast-paced series of gangster sci-fi stories set in a far-future world where humans may have left their home planet to populate the stars, but they haven’t managed to leave behind their vices. And that’s very good for business.

This was another high action, exciting story in which Willem Jaantzen and his team are working to take down the powerful enemy that is going after him with more and more vicious and deadly attacks. Starla and her team, including Gia, go on a mission to find out more about what the Alliance has been up to out in the desert, and find some much needed information as well as some surprises. Meanwhile Phaera is working under the radar to rally those in power to side with Jaantzen against the enemy they all hate and fear, which puts her in danger. I loved the conclusion of this book, but am now left dying to know what happens next and how it all turns out, especially the relationship between Jaantzen and Paera. I’m really loving these characters and this world, I’ll be watching for more from this author in the future, even after the conclusion of the Bulari Saga.
Heat Death is Book 4 in The Bulari Saga. Things really heat up as each chapter will leave your heart pounding! I couldn’t put this book down and read it in two days! I was so worried for my favorite characters, especially Starla. I have loved her since the first novella in the Durga System Series. I recommend that you read the novellas first and then the books in The Bulari Saga. The author, Jessie Kwak, keeps her stories tight, the characters interesting, and the scenes intense as the intrigue continues. I can’t wait for Kill Shot, Book 5!
I received an ARC. This is my honest and voluntary review.
This book is a bit mystery, a bit action thriller, and a whole lot of political intrigue plus murdercopters! Continuing to follow threads from previous books in the series and adding yet more intrigue, this is a book you don’t want to miss.
Jessie Kwak has built a complex, fascinating world populated with nuanced characters I’d like to meet, and a few I’d rather avoid. Watching the relationships and alliances continue to shift and the characters grow has been an amazing trip. Such a great ensemble – Phaera was a real stand out in this book, and Starla’s mission was exciting. The peek into Jaantzen’s past – oh, I don’t want to spoil anything, and then Oriol and Manu! Lucky is developing to be quite the interesting little (or maybe not so little) guy! I hope to see more of him in Kill Shot.
This is book 4 in the Bulgari saga with the larger arc coming to a much anticipated conclusion in book 5. Jessie Kwak does an excellent job of including info from previous books to jog your memory or catch you up without feeling like a replay reel. These are dense, intricately plotted books with all sorts of pieces coming together that are easy to miss on the first read though! Theoretically you could read and enjoy this book without having read the previous books, but I wouldn’t recommend it because there are serious SPOILERS for previous books, and once you read one you will want to read the whole series, so just do yourself a favor and start from the beginning.
