I read this entire series and I could not put them down.
3.5 Stars
I really wanted to love this story like so many others did but despite all the good parts and it being unputdownable I just wasn’t able to. =( It was really different to all other books that I’ve read by this author and I did enjoy this read but there was just too much that bothered me.
This kind of rating is actually a first for me and I feel really bad because I absolutely enjoyed and liked lots of the book and parts of it were even better than some other books of hers but I just couldn’t give more stars even if I wanted to.
You wanna know why I had to rate it so low? Keep on reading.
The Story:
Della isn’t like all the other girls. She doesn’t date and she sure as hell doesn’t need any boys to screw around with. Her focus is on studying and to provide a better life for her sister. In order to do that, she has to pass all the exams and there’s no time for any kind of distraction. Though in the end, she can’t resist Carter Hayes and his charm. Although he isn’t always the nicest, he sure as hell pushes all her buttons and sets her heart on fire. But what will happen after college when she leaves and all of this is left behind her?
But there’s one thing she takes with from her time with Carter and when he steps into her life again years later, it’s just a matter of time until everything will come together.
Thoughts:
So, first off, it was a fast paced story and that’s not even exaggerating. From start to finish, so many years passed, it was hard to keep up. Anyway, we got all of the good stuff you want to read in a book but it felt like all the things in between were missing. Like important conversations of characters getting to know each other or just random stuff about college or work or just life.
Don’t get me wrong. The story was exciting and I couldn’t put the book down because there was always something going on and it jumped from one thing to the other. It was like fast forward on their lives.
There were some things that bothered me a lot. For example of how low the heroine thought about all the girls falling for the boys and wanting to be screwed by the screw crew. She wasn’t one of those girls and she didn’t understand why they were all gooey around the guys. And then, all of a sudden, she wasn’t any different than the girls she just thought derogatory about. It’s safe to say that I didn’t like her that much.
I didn’t like that the group of boys was called the screw crew when they later turned out to be really nice guys. Kind of anyway because apart from at the beginning, there wasn’t any hint on them screwing around that much. So I had a hard time placing them because one second I hated them and the next I liked them. It was weird and got me all confused.
What’s his name? Oh, yeah, Carter. I already forgot. Anyway, I didn’t know what to think of Carter because he was such a heartless a** in the beginning. The things he did. Oh man. He did nice things here and there but as the rest of the group, I never knew what he came up with.
I could go on and on here. Me telling you what I didn’t like could be never ending but I don’t want to rant about the book. It sounds so crazy when I tell you that it was really entertaining and fun to read no matter how much it pissed me of at the same time.
This story’s just as unreal as it could get without it being supernatural. I felt like being in a love/hate relationship.
If you usually don’t like the boring parts of books where there are lots of details and explaining and whatnot in life, then this is the perfect book for you! Because it’s filled with all the good stuff. You just have to imagine the rest of it.
“Droplets of water trail over his face and I can honestly say I’ve never seen anything more beautiful in my life. The most beautiful things in life always come at a high price. I’m not sure I can afford whatever price I have to pay to have Carter in my life.”
I’m in love with these characters!! It’s often hard to tread that balance with a strong personality like Carter and still show his softer side, and the Author did it well!! Not at all what I expected…it was better!! I found myself wanting to know more about the rest, while falling in love with the banter, sexiness, and surprises in this one!! I thank the Author for providing a copy to review!!

I have gotten addicted to the Screw Crew! Michelle Horst has gotten me hooked to this amazing page turner. Heartless definitely brought out all the feels. I fell in love with Carter and Della’s story and can’t get enough. I’m absolutely obsessing over these hot as sin, cocky mofos!
4*
Della shares an apartment with Leigh, willow, & evie. When Evie gets fetched home hurt by Carter she jumps to the wrong conclusion.
Carter can’t get Della out of his mind, hoping one taste will be enough.
A misunderstanding has them loosing touch but a surprise is in store for them both.
I loved Della her whole taking care of others before herself and putting Carter in his place.
Fantastic characters for more books!
Great start to the series
Anything with Michelle Host name on it I will read. I am a HUGE fan, so when Heartless landed into my Kindle it was excitement overload and I couldn’t wait to dig in.
Book 1 of the Enemies To Lovers Series, we meet Carter Hayes and Della Truman.
Carter Hayes.
What a guy.
I loved to absolutely hate him.
Studying at college, the only goal Carter has is to graduate so he then can take over his fathers business, so his father can retire.
Self assured, arrogant, sinfully delicious. All things male. All things drool worthy.
But he’s as heartless as they come.
Nasty with his words, it’s the way Carter copes.
His past has left him scarred.
He won’t allow anyone to hurt him like she did.
Della Truman.
I absolutely adored her.
A beautiful, intelligent and witty college student nearing the end of her studies.
She has one goal in mind and that’s to graduate, get a great job and take care of her baby sister.
She stays below the radar at college, so she can focus.
But that is until she meets one of the screw crew members.
Yep you guessed it Carter Hayes.
This is Carter and Della’s story.
A fast paced, highly emotional read that I couldn’t put down. It was raw, naughty and at times highly confronting. It was heartbreaking and heartwarming. Overall a great read to soak yourself into.
But be prepared for Danny people…..Cuteness overload right there that will simply melt your heart.
I look forward to the next instalment of the series.
4 stars.
This book has my heart! 4 stars
This book has my heart, and I don’t want it back! I immediately felt for Della and that never changed. She has a crush on Carter but graduating was the most important thing to her. Carter also liked her, but a misunderstanding between them leaves them enemies. Carter was a heartless jerk to her after their misunderstanding, and he felt she pressed all his wring buttons. Della described him as “hot as sin on the outside but cold as ice on the inside.” Their attraction can’t be denied, and they finally give in to it. But life happens along with twists and turns that left me shocked and crying. I didn’t think it would be possible, but Carter actually made me swoon! Della and Carter’s love story had my heart beating fast, swooning, crying and smiling. I definitely recommend this book, and I can’t wait to read the next book/couple!
Carter and Della’s story is powerful and I loved every second of it. Michelle’s words just flow and you get lost in the book. Heartache, love, bonds, drama and more fill up this book. I can’t wait to read Logan’s story and hopefully see more if Carter & Della.
I began reading and didn’t put this down until the last page. It was very easy to read, heartbreaking, heartwarming, angst and a brotherhood. I really enjoyed the storyline and the characters were colourful and made me smile.
The screw crew…that’s right, these five gorgeous college males are commonly known as the Screw Crew. Panties are hitting the floor at a surprising rate, hands are raised…me, pick me. Yes these girls want to be on the Screwed by the Screw Crew list. Hot damn, she’s a cold one…I bet you I can get her to spread her legs…how much. Now they are playing a dangerous game, where hearts get hurt. These guys are full of bravado, however there’s a whole other side when you get to know them.
A great read and I loved how it showed what happened in college before the main part of the story. There were moments that had me laughing out loud, and I loved seeing all the guys with Danny – totally heart melting. However, I would’ve liked to see some glimpses of what happened before they reconnected 4 years later. I would recommend this book to other readers.
3.5 stars for the not so heartless
He may act, walk, and talk like an ass but he’s…yeah, that’s not true. Carter is totally an ass. But it’s not all he can be.
I love the idea of the story. I love the storyline. I just feel like everything moved way too fast. It felt more like an overview and then the conclusion. Maybe it’s the greedy bookstore in me, I wanted more. More depth of character, more interactions with the other guys, and more …everything.
Really enjoyed the first book in the Enemies to Lovers Series by Michelle Horst.
Carter Hayes is known as the Heartless one of the Screw Crew. He always gets what he wants and won’t let anything stand in his way. Every girl wants him and every guy wants to be him. He isn’t interested in relationships, only one nightstands. That is until he crosses paths with Della..
Della isn’t like any girl he’s ever met before. She doesn’t throw herself at him. In fact she doesn’t seem interested in him at all…
Can Carter change her mind?
You’ll have to read and find out! This book was full of sexy bad boys you can’t help but love. Each one so different. Can’t wait to read all their individual stories
Heartless is the first book in the series titled Enemies to Lovers that will accompany five friends, each with their own book. Marcus, Rhett, Jaxson, Logan and Carter are inseparable. They have beauty, money, women desire them and men envy them. With so much popularity, college is being a wonderful experience for the guys. These five friends have a list, where they mark all the names of the women with whom they became sexually involved. Thus is born the legend of ScrewCrew.
Here in this first book, we meet all the boys, and we understand some of the story of each one of them. But the main focus will be Carter and Della. Della is a student, who works as a waitress to support herself and send money to her younger sister. Her parents have died and the only help she has is from a family friend who take care to her sister until she is graduated. Life is not easy for Della. When she is not working, she is studying. She shares the apartment with other girls, but despite the time she lives there, she has never been able to form a friendship with them. Every penny she earns has a certain destiny. So things like food, clothing, leisure, are neglected.
One day working, she ends up serving the table her roommates are on. But they’re in the company of ScrewCrew. And this meeting was not very pleasant for her. As she does not seem interested, the boys instigated by Rhett who liked the challenge, make a bet on who will be able to get her to bed. Della gets angry and starts to hate the boys.
Rhett was very annoying at the time. He may be handsome and rotten rich, but if a person does not give him openness it is because she is not interested. He thinks he has the right to embarrass her to the point of making a bet, shows that he thinks he can do it all. I did not like that particular scene. It is very important for the book, because this bet is what will tone the book, but I did not like the joke.
Carter watches that girl and does not understand the fascination she causes. There is nothing extraordinary about her, she is an ordinary person, with simple clothes, she is not a woman who calls attention. Until a misunderstanding involving one of Della’s roommates, causes her to mistreated Carter, and he decides that he will be the winner of the bet.
Carter has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders. As the sole heir of an empire, he knows that his future will be a lot of work when he takes over the business of his father, whom he idolizes. This time in college is your last chance to live inconsistently with your friends. What he did not expect was that a mere distraction would turn into something stronger.
And in the unfolding we follow the birth of love between Della and Carter. Like the poor, timid girl with so much responsibility in her life fell in love with the millionaire heir of a world so distant from her own. When college finally ends, there is a party, and they end up spending a night together. The farewell between the two, which began with so many oaths and declarations, ends in a way neither of them would imagine.
Four years have passed and Della has returned to her hometown. She still works as a waitress, takes care of her sister, struggles daily to keep up. Her plans for a better life were cut short by fate. Carter is a successful businessman who runs the empire of his family. And on a trip ends up going to the restaurant that Della works for. With four years between them, can you understand each other?
Both characters are interesting, well-built. Carter although at first seem frivolous, you realize that no, he is a good person. Della has endured so much and life continues to present problems. She is strong, hardworking and does not get discouraged. I liked her.
The story is interesting, the surprise at the end was a good addition to the plot, Carter coped well with the news. The other boys have redeemed themselves, grown up and seem to have come to their senses. A good book, with a well presented storybook that will leave the reader looking forward to the next volumes.
I am a Michelle Horst addict. If she writes a book, I will read it. So when this baby popped up I was a little surprised. It is not what I am used to seeing from Michelle, but being the loyal fan that I am, I went with it. As always, I was not disappointed. I am proud to say I am officially a Screw Babe for life!
Carter Hayes is the epitome of an alpha male. You do what he says, when he says, or there is hell to pay. So when Della comes along with her sassy mouth and attitude, who would have thought they would end up together. These two were made for each other, even if they did not know it at first. They will go through hell and back to find their happily ever after, but let me just say it was worth it.
All of the characters in the Screw Crew are present in this book, they do not disappear or fall into the background like most series that I have read. They stay close and take care of one another in a way a family would. I love that Michelle is able to take the book past the filthy hot sex and love story between the two main characters, but also let us know more about what to expect in books to come.
I recommend this book for anyone that is looking for a book to read. That is, if you wanna read something, read this and I promise you will not be disappointed. I can not wait to see what Michelle has in store for us in the next installment of the series.
I was hooked from the time I read “screw crew” haha. Such a great nick name. Carter is a perfect alpha jerk and I love how Della stood up to him. All the other boys are awesome too. This story kept me intrigued and I can’t wait to read the other books!
Christ on a cracker, this was NOT what I expected.
First of all, I generally really like this author’s work. I’ve read and enjoyed some of her darker romances. I really liked Predator, even though it was a little more violent than I usually care for in my romance reads. (Update: The book cover now says Michelle Heard instead of Michelle Horst. I’m assuming they’re the same author, but I’m not absolutely sure, so my apologies if I made an incorrect assumption) And, I love a good enemies-to-lovers read, too, so I thought this one was a sure thing—a future 5-star read. To say I was let down when I got to the end of the book would be an understatement.
Sadly, my problems with the story are rather extensive:
False advertising:
The blurb would lead you to believe this is mostly a new adult romance, set in college. In reality, the characters are only in college for about 20% of the book. Then there’s a time jump and a secret baby. (I HATE a secret baby) The majority of the book is not a new adult romance, so anyone expecting angsty, college romance (like I was) will likely be disappointed with this book.
The heroine:
Della is almost pathetically weak. She lets a rude comment or two from the hero, Carter, emotionally crush her and wreck her confidence WHEN SHE’D JUST MET THE GUY. She’s also one of these impossibly gorgeous creatures that all the men love, and yet she describes herself as below average in the looks department. I call it a symptom of Bella Swan syndrome.
Then, after the time jump, she ushers Carter back into her life with open arms (and legs) SUPER quickly. I could forgive her for that if she also didn’t let Carter make all her decisions for her. But, alas, Della lets Carter swoop in and “fix” her entire life without really giving her a say in the matter. She’s nothing but Carter’s little moldable trophy wife by the end of the story, and I resented the crap out of her on behalf of feminists everywhere.
And, while I don’t intend to blame victims in any way, Della is attacked and needs to be rescued by Carter not once, but TWICE in this story. She barely even fights back either time. If there’s one thing I can’t tolerate it’s a damsel in distress who does next to nothing to protect herself, and Della is FOR SURE a damsel in distress.
The hero:
Carter’s an alphahole. He feels something for Della, and of course, emotions are super scary for alphaholes, so he tells her she smells and tastes like shit. (I’m not even making that up) And this is a dude who is described in the blurb as having irresistible charm! I saw no evidence of his “charm”. He was an emotionally stunted alphahole in college, and after the time jump, he was a demanding alphahole who pretty much bullied Della into doing everything his way, without really asking her what she wanted. (Not that it mattered. She didn’t really want anything for herself, anyway. But that’s beside the point.)
Instalove:
The subtitle is another thing that is misleading about this book. Carter and Della are never really enemies. They’re immediately super attracted to each other, and human emotions terrify Carter, so he acts like a complete dillhole. It’s only a few days after Carter is a total dillhole to Della that Della decides to go ahead and have sex with him, because Carter apologizes. (Kind of. It’s a pretty lackluster apology that attempted to justify his douchebaggery. It wouldn’t have worked on me. I would have nut-punched him. But maybe that’s just me…) Then, when they reconnect after the time jump, they fall immediately into the role of happy little family, even though they barely know each other (and never really knew each other to begin with). It was all pretty unrealistic and annoying.
Long-story-short, this one wasn’t my cuppa. I probably won’t read the rest of the books in the series. (Frankly it’s hard to get invested in any group of men who are proud to be referred to as “the screw crew”) But, like I said earlier, I have faith in this author, so I’m not giving up on her. I’ll just stick to her more adult romances. I think it’s been pretty well established that new adult just isn’t made for grumpy old ladies like me.
First half of the book was fantastic. And I mean FANTASTIC!!!!
The second half was OK.
Heartless is a perfect second chance love story, this is the first story in the enemies to lovers series . The screw crew guys were all jerks but at the same time uber sexy . Carter and Della characters were perfect compliment for each other, totally different yet perfect match . This is the first time I have read Michelle Horst and I totally enjoyed it, the story was a page turner and all the characters were sketched so perfectly. I read Heartless in one sitting and purchased Reckless right away , can’t wait to read the remaining books on the screw crew guys . Would definitely recommend this story.
Carter comes from money and is part of the Screw Crew – every woman wants them and every man want to be one of them, although Carter doesn’t do relationships due to believing that every woman will leave like his mother did, giving him the nickname Heartless.
Della works at the local diner while trying to finish college and make a life for her and her family.
When the Screw Crew comes to the diner there is an instant attraction between Della and Carter, although Carter tries to deny it by being mean to her. After coming to Della’s rescue a few time Carter lets her know how he feels only for Della to say that she can’t while she has exams and finishing college, all Della wants to do is give her family a better life.
After exams Della realises that she may never see Carter again she head to he’s hour and has the best moment of her life, until she hears a phone call that has her leaving and returning home, although she doesn’t realise till later the secret she takes home with her.
Four years later they meet again, the chemistry is still there between the two of them but they have secrets and issues to work through before they can get to their happily ever after. You meet the other characters from the Screw Crew and I can’t wait to read their stories.
