As the Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at Grady Memorial, Karlee Shae Kinkade deals with hearts all day long– young ones, and she’s the best at mending them when they’re broken. With a schedule like hers, there’s no time for love. Her patients need her. She’s tried finding it on her own, but love is fickle when time is precious.Instead, she gets that warm, fuzzy feeling that love brings from her … love brings from her patients and her ‘Magic Brew’ at the local coffee shop. They say there’s a love potion in those coffee beans. If there is, put it in an IV bag and hook Karlee up STAT.
While she is saving lives and finding cures for heart disease, her friends are getting engaged or married, and some are starting families. Karlee feels her biological clock ticking with no future husband in sight.
That is until the hot new Emergency doctor stalks her to find out where the ‘Magic Brew’ comes from.
He’s bold and funny, with an accent like James Bond and a smile that will make your heart explode. There are only two things holding her back…he’s a colleague and she isn’t a fan of the hospital rumor mill. She’s seen enough of Grey’s Anatomy to know she doesn’t need that kind of drama in her life.
Can Karlee throw caution to the wind and listen to what her own heart is telling her?

Heart Strings, a novella by C.M. Lally, is my very first book by this author.
Dr. Karlee Shae KinKade, otherwise known as Dr. K, is the Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at Grady Memorial Hospital. She’s the youngest to make chief of a department at her hospital but the position hasn’t come without concessions. Karlee gives everything to her young patients. She spends long hours at the hospital, going home alone to her cat. She has no time or energy to go out to meet people but she can’t deny that it bothers her knowing other women her age are marrying and having children.
One of Karlee’s greatest pleasures and what sustains her during her long hours at work is what they call the “magic brew” at a coffee shop near the hospital. The coffee is heaven and the shop also offers a quiet corner to decompress at times when she needs a few minutes away from the hospital.
It’s during one of her visits to the shop when she is approached by the best looking man she has ever seen who is also wearing the white coat of a doctor. He is complete with dimples and a swoony British accent. Dr. Marc Haliday is the new attending in the Emergency Department.
Marc soon approaches Karlee with a joint project, a community health fair. It’s obvious that Marc is also interested in Karlee as well. Karlee never dates within the hospital. She can’t stand hospital gossip and doesn’t want to be the topic of it. But Marc is hard to resist. Karlee is going to have to decide whether to follow her heart and see where this might go, or shut it down before it even has a chance to get started.
This is such a sweet little story. Marc is most definitely sexy and these two had buckets of chemistry. He knows what he wants and is determined to get it. It’s Karlee that will have to decide whether she is willing to give love a chance.
Heart Strings was the perfect addition to my Valentines night in. Karlee and Marc were a slowburn I enjoyed falling into. This was a sweet and quick read with characters that were fun to get to know. I especially enjoyed Dr. Haliday’s accent (at least the way I imagined it in my head) and his charismatic personality. I’m an avid Grey’s Anatomy fan and CM Lally definitely scratched my medical drama itch, just without as many sudden, tragic deaths.
I voluntarily received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Now, this is a perfectly titled book!
“Heart Strings” are being tugged in all directions-including my own.
Crazy as it may sound I wasn’t fond of either-Karlee Shae Kinkade or Marcus Remington Holiday in the beginning.
They both seemed to have a chip on their sholder.. or at least, so I thought.
Moving along in the race to find answers and love it hit me, Ms. Lally had created beautifully flawed, real, with the best of intentions characters that were going to make the same messy mistakes we all do – tipping the scale of love/dislike more 95/5 *winks*
Powerful in its message, layered with heat and sweet its a perfect story to get lost in for a little while!
3.5 Stars
I enjoyed this quick read. I really liked Marc. Karlee took a little longer to warm up to even though the story is told from her point of view.
