This is a really good series starter, with and lot of world building and character development. The story is interesting, a woman with what’s seems to be a very strong sixth sense finds herself in the midst of a magical culture, torn between two factions, and just wanting to live a normal life. There is a lot of intrigue and mystery surrounding all the characters and their intentions, we don’t even truly understand what everyone is after until almost the end of the book. Most books have a level of predictability as the story progresses, but this one managed to get in some surprising twists, both good and bad, which was refreshing. I’ll be very interested to see where the story goes from here.
I received this audiobook free in exchange for my fair and honest review.
I really enjoyed this authors ability to weave a story and I thought the narrator Joanna Roddy had the perfect voice for this book! The story was tight all the way through from character, plot and world building to descriptions that added enough I had a good visual.
Mirella is a college student who has moved, she thinks her mother is insane and they aren’t close. She wants to finally have a normal life and she has that until she learns she has a powerful magic that mostly manifests in the form of a sixth sense. Mysterious characters are after her for reasons she doesn’t understand at first. Men desire her, especially a particularly good looking man whom she develops feelings for.
I’m not ever a romance reader but this book isn’t only romance its suspense, fantasy and full bodied plot!
Mirella, a young woman descended from magic, has lived her life always moving from one place to another. Her mother has never told her the truth about her past, why they are always moving, or why she plants the strange golden plants wherever they live. Her mother has secrets, and soon they are going to catch up to them both.
Heart Seeker by Juliana Haygert is book one in her The Fire Heart Chronicles. This book begins a series that follows a young woman as she learns the secrets of her past and the uniqueness of who she really is. I like Mirella’s character overall. She’s a unique character. Despite all the moving about she still craves to be a part of. She keeps people at a distance, but then she still reaches out. I appreciate that she is considerate of the other characters as much as she can be. When someone takes something of hers she doesn’t just let it go. She goes after to them in an attempt to protect them.
This story is layered with secrets and dark shadows. I enjoy this, but at times, it feels like the story slows down a bit too much. I have to admit that I didn’t like the shift in how Mirella begins to identify one of the characters. I didn’t like her identifying Darcy as “old hag.” I felt that it was a bit out of character for Mirella as she comes off so much as sweet, kind and gentle. I am happy to say that this book appears to be thoroughly edited and that I didn’t detect any noticeable editorial errors.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. This story has some romance, a lot of twists, plenty of secrets, and danger galore. If you are a fan of Juliana Haygert I recommend you pick this book up and start reading. This is definitely an interesting paranormal novel.
3.5 Stars A Fascinating Storyline!!
(Read using Kindle Unlimited)
Mirella is a 20 year old college student paying her way through by teaching Ballet & Flamenco classes to children & adults at her local Dance Studio. She loves dance, always has, it’s probably the only thing that really connected her with her Mum!! They’d had a falling out when Mirella insisted on going away to college so hadn’t spoken since!!
Mirella had a strange upbringing. Her Mum always told her never to trust men, that she couldn’t have any friends & they moved – a lot!!! She did have one friend her Mum didn’t know about, she’d sneak out to see her & at Christmas break she’d made her a necklace to take to open Christmas Day She later found out that her best friend & all her family were murdered Christmas Day She always somehow felt responsible. When she told her Mum about it, it led to months of move after move from one end of the Country to the other, her Mum never gave her any explanations but she never got close to anyone again!!
On her way back from buying new Ballet shoes she’s stopped by a Romani (Gypsy) woman who badgers her to get her palm read, she refuses but the woman grabs it, looks at it for a few seconds then with a pale face informs her – She’s sorry Death is coming for her!! Mirella leaves & although spooked she assumes the woman was being spiteful because she wouldn’t pay for the full palm reading!! It’s later she remembers it when two youngsters from her class, who had pinched a couple of her bracelets, are attacked. It reminds her of her friend from years before!!
Many things about her Mums past and their heritage come to light. There are a group called Alchemists that are after her & people like her!! she is Tzigenes, a branch off of the Romani Gypsy Travellers, but their magic is much, much stronger!!
This is where the character let the storyline down for me. In the latter half of the book she internally whined constantly, Urgh!! She quite happily expected the warriors to put their lives on the line for her but she still snuck off? #Idiotic She didn’t want to choose one enclave over the other but allowed them both to protect her, she didn’t want to loose her freedom, etc etc etc She was quite a selfish brat to be honest!! I found this a real shame as she’d been great up until all of that Also, she’s not ‘innocent’ but the elders think that it’s important she is & stays that way her WHOLE LIFE so why not just tell them the truth?? She’s clearly still who they need her to be!!*smh*
So the storyline & it’s characters were, on the whole, great Yes, Mirella let herself & the readers down, but she can redeem herself by becoming a badass that speaks out & stands up for herself, in a respectful way She needs to mend fences with her Mum too
(Any one else think Dolan may be her Daddy? Would that make Theron her Cousin or Brother ) It would give the enclaves more reasons to either reunite or work together fully Also, what the heck is with Felix
I’ll definitely be back for book 2 with high hopes for those improvements 3.5 Stars

Heart Seeker by Juliana Haygert a five-star read that will find you and take you on a wild ride. This is the first book in the Fire Heart Chronicles and what a start, you will feel for Mirella more than you will think possible, this story is just wow, the twists and turns are amazing. Strange things have always happened to Mirella but now she is standing on her own two feet will she find out what is truly happening? Would you be able to stan up for what you believe against people who think they have your best interests at heart, and who really can you trust? This was a great example of urban fantasy read and it has so much heart you can feel it bursting from the pages. There is romance and drama and twists to keep you hooked and each page seems better than the last, number two can’t come quick enough!! I need to see where Mirella’s heart will lead.
Great story. Mirella is absolutely fabulous. The training that she received from her mother to distrust everybody holds sway over almost all aspects of her life. Very independent, but she wants desperately to be part of a fun and loving group: more than just herself.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and voluntarily posted an honest review.
