As the list of the missing grows, the city’s anger turns against the vampires, and the Vampire Court hires Mark and Alice to find those responsible. “Edmonds’s prose is energetic…Alice is both spunky and self-deprecating, with incredibly advanced magical powers…There is promise in Edmonds’s melding of the supernatural and the everyday.” – PUBLISHER’S WEEKLY ★★★★★
AUTHOR INTERVIEW
Q: Why do you write?
A: I’ve wanted to be a writer since I was five years old and I wrote my first story. My head is always full of stories and it’s so wonderful and such a privilege to get to share them with others. I write because I *have* to write and because there’s nothing I love to do more. When you write, you get to bring people to life, create a world for them to inhabit, and invite readers to enjoy that world with you. If that’s not real magic, I don’t know what is.
Q: What books do you write?
A: I want to write the kinds of stories and books that I love to read–lots of adventure, mystery, suspense, action, twists, magic, and of course romance. The Alice Worth series is paranormal mystery set in a world very like our own, but with magic and supernatural beings. I hope readers get caught up in the mysteries and enjoy going on adventures with Alice as she tries to solve them and figure out her place in the world. The reading order follows below.
ALICE WORTH
- HEART OF MALICE (book 1)
- JUST FOR ONE NIGHT (short story)
- BLOOD MONEY (novella)
- HEART OF FIRE (book 2)
Q: Do you use music in your writing?
A: Yes! Each Alice Worth book has a curated playlist of songs featured in the novel, as well as other tunes that enhance your reading experience. Alice loves music and so do I! See the playlists on my website.

I am really enjoying getting into this series. This book was one where I kept waiting for the proverbial shoe to drop! Alice is a strong character learning she needs to accept help sometimes. She really lets her inner self show in this book as well. I see some reviews that question why she has so many love interests. i think the fact that she is opening herself up and is learning is the reason. She also learns quickly who she wants and doesn’t let it drag on. This is a great book and I had a hard time putting it down.
I LOVED Book 1, and Book 2 keeps the tension, suspense, romance, and stakes building. Alice is on the case of missing persons who’ve disappeared under supernatural circumstances. The public and the police blame vampires, but Alice suspects a group of seriously evil blood mages is behind the disappearances. Proving it turns deadly for a dear friend and costs Alice some of her carefully guarded secrets. Amid a deadly case and dubious allies, Alice finds comfort in friends, a sexy alpha werewolf, and a smoking hot Fed, but only one will accept her for who she is – the good, the bad, and the deadly.
The story picks up a couple of weeks after the ending of book 1. I would advise to read that one first, as not much time is spent on explaining or rehashing what happened in that book and it will leave you wondering who is who and what’s what.
Alice is going through a very rough patch. She and Sean have broken up after a ridiculous fight and she refuses to acknowledge what happened in book 1 has affected her and brought back memories of the past. When her former employer Mark calls to ask her help in catching a possible serial killer of missing women (mostly prostitutes) Alice has to work with Sean to find the missing women. The Vampire Court is their employer, as the vampires are suspected of the killings.
Even when I sometimes thought Alice to be (too) stubborn, I understood where she was coming from. After all she went through she has difficulties trusting people and letting them in. Her relationships with Sean, Malcolm and Charles are explored in this story and I was impressed by the steps Alice made.
I really enjoyed this second book and hope the next will be published soon.
One of the best book series I’ve read in a long time. I couldn’t put it down and am in turmoil waiting for the next to be written.
Book two in the Alice Worth series picks up about a month after the conclusion of book one. Alice isn’t coping very well with how things ended with her last case. She’s not eating or sleeping but she sure is racking up quite the stack of liquor bottles. When her old friend and mentor Mark Dunlap comes to her for help with a case, Alice snaps out of her stupor and remembers why she became an MPI in the first place.
With new and old acquaintances coming into her life, Alice has a lot on her plate. Prostitutes and homeless people are going missing and a new drug is on the streets. It will take everyone and everything Alice has to find out what’s going on.
With a power-hungry vampire and persistent SPEMA agent trying to figure out Alice’s secrets, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for Alice to do her job while keeping certain parts of her past hidden. She comes to realize just how important some of the people in her life really are to her.
While some of my favorites from the first book weren’t as heavily featured in book two, we get to see a bit more into Sean’s life as alpha and what the vampire court really is. I have hope that book three will cement some of the relationships we have seen building since the beginning. I’d love some of the answers to the questions that were brought up in book one, as well. I can’t wait to see where the next part of the adventure takes us. With the non-magical community in an uproar, I can’t see things going well for our beloved main characters.
Book three here I come.
I loved the emotions this one evoked. I was right there with Alice the whole time.
Lisa has outdone herself with the second book in the Alice Worth series. Tensions between paranormals and humans escalate in this pulse-pounding thriller. Women start disappearing, the kind of women no one will fight for–no one but Alice, PI mage with a dark past that gives her a special connection to these women. Alice has quickly become my favorite heroin, and this book only strengthened that.
Whilst you don’t need to read Blood Money before reading Heart of Fire, it really helps give the backstory to Alice’s relationship with her mentor. It also gives us more motivation in Malcolm’s behaviour, and it’s always worth knowing what a vampire is up to.
In Heart of Fire, Alice deals with relationships – as well as the main plot of the story, which is to find out what has happened to all these kidnapped women. She is slowly learning that she is building a family of choice, and that she can have relationships and safely explore their boundaries. I was frustrated with Alice’s relationship with Sean, but she is seeing that she can trust someone without losing her self. That being said, I also believe that Alice has extreme PTSD issues to work through, and none of it is easily resolved.
I am glad that we got to see more of Agent Parker, and see more of the Vampire Council in all their craftiness. It was also great to see more of Sean’s pack life, so that Alice can understand his motivation and character better.
I absolutely recommend reading this book – I received a copy of it in advance in exchange for an honest review, and I am also purchasing it because I really love the series. I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
What a great following to the first Alice Worth book! I loved this one just as much as Heart of Malice.
Alice is called in to help find “working girls” that have disappeared. Along the way she runs into a whole host of complications. Some that were completely heart breaking. Alice continues to resist the help or assistance of anyone other than Malcolm. When Sean suddenly reappears in her life she is determined to keep him at a distance but the chemistry between these two can’t be denied.
This has a deep mystery at its core and a process of finding the villain that is filled with action, mayhem and magic. I enjoyed watching Alice as she slowly begins to open herself up to the possibilities of more not only in her professional life but in her private life as well. Sean made me fall in love with him all over again with his dedication to protecting her and his own determination to give her the freedom she required. It’s a hard place to be for him but he lived up to the challenge in ways I never imagined an alpha wolf shifter could do.
This is not a fast paced book but there is no place to skim because everything is vital to the story. I never once felt the urge to skip ahead unless it was to find out all the answers now! Again, we end with a bit of a cliffhanger. There are still lots of questions left unanswered and while things are somewhat settled between Sean and Alice, the potential of unsettlement is high. I strongly urge that book one be read before this one. And now to wait for the next installment. Sigh.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
