Read Book One in a fabulous new Highlander Romance series, only from NYT Bestselling author Paula Quinn! Read for FREE in Kindle Unlimited.A Scottish warrior and a Norman maiden clash in this stunning epic! Cainnech (Cain) MacPherson’s hatred for the English was born when he was a lad of seven, the day they raided his village and killed his family. They took everything from him without mercy and … from him without mercy and tossed him onto the battlefield, where the memory of love faded to dust and left nothing in its wake but violence.
Now, as Robert the Bruce’s most formidable, most lethal warrior, he wreaks havoc on his enemy, taking land by force and without mercy. But when he raids a small castle in Northumberland, he faces his greatest opponent yet—a bold, beautiful Norman lass who will see him dead at any cost rather than give up her home…even if it means tearing open his armored heart and stirring the ashes that remain.
Aleysia d’Argentan will do anything to keep the hated Scots out of her castle and away from her villagers. She has prepared for this day for the last four years, building traps in the forest, poisoning the grain, and hiding daggers wherever she could use them to kill her enemy. But she isn’t prepared for the brawny, brooding Highland warlord who invades her life—and her heart. He is an infuriating, irresistible opponent with a curious touch, a smoldering kiss, and a reluctant smile that begins to shine on her alone.
Can the ashes of his heart be stirred into flame by his enemy?

Heart of Ashes, by Paula Quinn is a Scottish treasure to read. Her writing moves through the book flawlessly. Every detail that Paula writes is given with enough details to open the readers imagination. Paula, was able to intrigue her readers with drama, action and a little humor. These scenes played well from the beginning of the book to the end of the book.
As the reader, I was pleased with the many different characters in the story. They help carry the playfulness and some of the heart warming moments in the story. Paulas story takes to the hills and borderline of England and Scotland. Here you find Aleysia and her noble Knight Richard last to leave her castle. Aleysia made a vow to her people that she would not give up her castle to the Scottish.
So she fought them. By herself. The Commander of these men Cain, he was beside himself. Cain vowed that he would not back down from the phantom that was taking out his men. Once our two leading characters found out about one another and what role that they played in this battle. The bigger battle was set to begin.
I recommend this book. FYI, you will love the part at the Abbey. Always watch the person who hides their hands. Even if they wear a habit. Until next time my fellow readers… read on! I voluntary reviewed this ARC after receiving a free gifted copy.
Now THAT is my kind of story, my kind of heroine and my kind of hero!!! I loved everything about this book, I can’t even think of any one thing that I didn’t like! Very well written, kicka$$ hero and heroine, lovable secondary characters, action throughout, in fact everything you would ever want in a historical romance.
Cainnech is such a tortured soul and all he knows is war and killing. Aleysia will do anything to save her home and her village from the Scots. When the two meet, all they want to do is kill each other! lol Soon passions are flaring and it’s up to Aleysia to find Cain’s heart amidst the ashes and show him that love is not something he should be afraid of feeling. Oh, be still my heart, these two are soooo perfect together!!!
I also have to say the title is one of the most perfect I’ve ever heard….Heart of Ashes….a must read!
It was hard to get into the first half but I really enjoyed the second!
Heart of Ashes, by Paula Quinn, became available at booksellers on 1-14-19. Hearts is book 1 in Ms Quinn’s Hearts Of The Highlands series. Dragonblade Publishing kindly made this book available free of charge. In return I read and will give my honest review.
Ms Quinn wondered if she should stray from her familiar family of characters, I think the answer is yes. My only con was the heroine was a little too eager to jump into bed with our hero. I just can’t see a young lady being so forward, & others letting her ask questions about sex. It stepped over the line for me. I suspended my belief system for much of the plot because I was having fun with the characters. The war for Scottish independence was real & King Robert The Bruce shows up!
Cain & Aleysia are both wounded by their horrid childhoods. Cain more so, it’s an awful tale & one that could be true. Aleysia less so, but it was bent to fit the story so ok. This is where you begin to let go of preconceived notions. Cain wasn’t as hardened as you’d think & when he falls in love he lands with a big thud. Aleysia is hardened more than a gently bred lady should be. She lives in crippling fear & has dealt with it by preparing for war. She’s crafty, you’ll love her ingenuity. She’s a heck of a warrior. The first fight scene is terrific.
The supporting cast of characters are interesting and fill in the plot nicely. The villagers have coddled Aleysia & let her run wild, which couldn’t happen in real life, but for the story it’s perfect. I’m off to look for book 2, the Cain’s younger brother. I like this series & Highlanders are hot.

A real page turner!
I noticed that Paula Quinn was offering her new book ‘Heart Of Ashes’ at Kindle Unlimited. What a fun adventure to follow. I’m so glad I decided to pick this one. It’s filled with romance, action-packed and lots of twists and turns. Give her book a chance, it’s the 1st story in her ‘Hearts of the Highlands’ series! You won’t be disappointed! I liked heroine, she is headstrong, bold and protective for that period of time.
‘Heart Of Ashes’ tells the journey of Cain, a great Scottish warrior and Aleysia, a beautiful and smart Norman woman. Both their worlds will collide with force! Will this brave woman deal with a man with a heart so cold? Will spark flare all over and create a hot chemistry between Cain and Aleysia?
I received this book free from Kindle Unlimited Canada.
Cain MacPherson hates the English as much as Aleysia d’Argentan hates Scots. When Cain comes to claim her home in the name of Robert he Bruce Aleysia will fight tooth and nail to stop them. Aleysia has been planning and waiting for them to come for the last four years and she is ready for them. Cain can’t help but be attracted and infuriated at her. Neither Cain nor Aleysia are prepared for the feelings they are having for each other. I couldn’t wait to get to read every night, this was such a good story. I loved all the characters in this book, Aleysia was such a spitfire but made me smile, Cain was hard but had that soft side you knew was in there. It was such a pleasure to read this book. I have always enjoyed Paula Quinn’s books and I was excited to read this one, it did not disappoint! Definitely recommend!
Since her brother was killed by the Scottish, Aleysia d’Argentan has prepared herself, her castle and lands for when they descend on them. It has been four years of hard work and planning. Now they are coming and she is ready.
Cainnech MacPherson is a Commander in the army of Robert the Bruce. This latest castle he has been told to take looks abandoned, it should be easy.
Our heroine is a very courageous young lady who is determined to protect her home. She is clever, cunning and well organised.
Our hero is a warrior through and through, with no softer feelings.
A wonderful story with lots of excitement and times where I was thinking “you go girl”. All the characters are fun and I hope we will meet them again.
I loved every page.
