This book was formerly titled PRAIRIE FEVER.Playing doctor has never been so sexy…Confirmed bachelor Gunnar Hansen has successfully resisted the matchmaking efforts of Dottie Grace and her posse of granny wannabe’s. There’s no room in his life for love or for starting a family of his own. Not when his hands are full running Hansen Stables and heading up the board of Prairie’s new medical … Prairie’s new medical clinic. She’s determined to keep her heart locked away…
Four years ago and fresh out of medical school, Suzannah Winslow took a gamble on a sweet-talking cowboy who left her high and dry… and pregnant. With her residency behind her, and an offer to become Prairie’s first and only physician, she can finally provide her daughter with stability she’s longed for. She has no interest in taking a second chance on a silver-tongued cowboy full of empty promises. Even if his smile still melts her panties.
But Gunnar has other ideas, and when he mounts a full-scale campaign to win back the woman he lost, will little Lula Beth become his unlikely ally or the wedge that drives them apart for good?
A sexy standalone second-chance/secret baby romance showing what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas.

I loved Gunner Hansen and the entire cast of characters in this midwest small town. A great read.
As in any relationship, communication is key, and in these times, don’t lose or let your phone die. Gunnar and Suzanna learn this the hard way, more than once. I liked that the original miscommunication was discovered and moved past, without undue fuss. I enjoyed this book and Lulah, too.
Love the second chance stories and how things end up as they should. Great story.
Good story and characters.
Heart Of A Bachelor is a fantastic contemporary romance with a bit of western flavor by Tessa Layne. Ms. Layne has provided a well-written book but the best part is the phenomenal characters. After a few days in Vegas Gunnar and Suzannah are going to be married but due to an avalanche of mishaps, the wedding doesn’t happen. Suzannah arrives in town with her daughter to run the new medical clinic. Gunnar is shocked to learn the new doctor is Suzannah. Suzannah and Gunnar’s story is loaded with drama, humor, sizzle and action. I loved everything about this book and look forward to my next book by Tessa Layne. Heart Of A Bachelor is book 7 of the Cowboys of the Flint Hills Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
Too much graphic sex
07/21/2021 I started reading “Heart of a Bachelor” (nook) as soon as I finished “Heart of a Cowboy.” Wow. Another heartwrencher. I very much enjoyed Gunnar’s and Suzannah’s story and their instant attraction in Las Vegas. Tears and joy.
Love it. Recomended 100%.
This book was so romantic! Gunner and Suzanne had to wait five years, but what a ride their lives took! So much miscommunication, doubt and fear almost crippled their chance for a HEA. I highly recommend reading this wonderful love story!
I really enjoyed this book. Both Gunner and Suzannah were believable characters. It was obvious they still loved each other, and each little, tiny step forward was well doneI absolutely LOVE reading books that are well edited – no misspellings, no words left out or incorrect ones. It was a rare page turner for me. I usually have no problem putting a book down until the next day, but I stayed up to get to the end on this one. I suppose it could be said it was a bit “unrealistic” but I like to think something like this could actually happen. Only thing I would have preferred would have been for Suzannah to speak up about needing help in the clinic!!!!!
Good story that requires setting aside a bunch of credibility issues right of the bat. Once you accept the 4 plus years later premises, it is nicely developed. It does have some detailed sex scenes, so it is not clean romance. They were not easy to skip as they had some content dialogue.
Towards the end I had issues with the gastro problems being labelled as norovirus. I’ve had that on a ship. My experience was very different then the story. Again, set it aside. Next time the author might stick with a non-specific flu. When I had it norovirus required a stool exam to verify and they didn’t have that here.
A fun read. Attraction to each other a little unreal but a cute light romance story
One of the things I absolutely love about this series is the continuity. I love seeing the characters from previous books as we meet new ones.
Gunnar is the oldest Hansen brother, he seems to have given up on women and in this book we find out why.
Suzannah Winslow is a family doctor, she has passed the requisites the board of the new Clinic in Prairie has set forth and has come to town to start work.
Neither of them realized who the other was until a rather volatile confrontation at the welcoming at Dottie’s diner. Yes Gunner and Suzannah have a history that could undermine the community efforts in one encounter.
Right from Gunner’s apology things get way more complicated. Although he does his best to stay away. Fixing the fences on the Hansen property, he finds himself with an injury leaving him with no choice but to see her.
Major misunderstandings, a secret confessed, and a whole lot of making up and other events will keep you turning the pages.
Laughter, love, and some tears all combine to have me almost begging for the next book.
I have to say that first and foremost, I love Tessa Layne’s writing. This book was no exception.
The characters stole my heart by chapter 3. I cried, I laughed, I cried again… all by chapter 9… I couldn’t put this book down.
ARC for honest review with no compensation
This is book 7 in the Cowboys of Flint Hills series and is about Gunnar Hansen and Suzannah Winslow who had a hot and heavy fling in Vegas a few years ago and as they say…sometimes … what happens in Vegas doesn’t always say there!!
Gunnar believes he is a confirmed bachelor and is not destined to find love like his brothers ever since he thought he found “the one” in Vegas years ago, they were going to get married but she never showed up. Now between running Hansen Stable and as board president of the new medical clinic he definitely doesn’t have time for love. That is until the new doctor shows up and comes with a daughter!!
Suzannah Winslow took a chance on a sweet talking, hunky cowboy who ended up leaving her high and dry along with being pregnant. After accepting the position in Prairie as the only doctor around for miles she runs into the one person she thought she would never see again…Gunnar and he doesn’t know he has a daughter.
Can these two find their way past what happened years ago and become a family they both have always wanted or will Suzannah hold strong that no man is worth risking her heart for??
Prairie Fever (Cowboys of the Flint Hills) by Tessa Layne. This is Gunnar Hansen and Suzannah Winslow’s story.
Gunnar and Suzannah are reacquainted after four years. Even though they are still hurt by the actions or lack of actions on both their parts the chemistry is stronger than ever between them. Gunnar and Suzannah have some tough things to work through. The author did a great job of making the characters and their emotions feel so real.
I loved Gunnar and Suzannah’s characters and throughly enjoyed their story. This is a heartwarming and emotional with hot chemistry second chance read.
FYI, contains mature content. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Wow! Emotional, raw, intense, and beautiful! The small town doc and the horseman put everything they have into making their relationship work. Loved it. The characters were amazing and the storyline was fresh. Can’t wait for more from this series!
wow these two have a pretty rough road to their HEA – the banter and hot scenes are well worth the read!
Gunnar is a hardworking man who is happy with his life, after one near miss of saying “I do” and getting stood up left him thinking that being single isn’t so bad.
Suzannah has had a lot to deal with in the past 4 years. She only has a few close friends to rely on. However, she is need of a job and Prairie needs a doctor. This is a chance she and her daughter need to take. However, she didn’t think she would run into the man who stole her heart and then proceeded to break it.
I loved reading about these two who from the very beginning are meant to be together. It was both fun and heartbreaking to watch these two dance around each other both trying to be there for their daughter.
Watching Gunnar take one the Dad role even before Suzannah allowed it was amazing to read. When dad and daughter were playing Batman, it melted my heart.
This is an amazing second chance book.
Once again, these Cowboys of the Flint Hills are so perfect! The characters in this series all make appearances which I love. The story may focused on a couple, this time, Gunnar and Suzannah, but like real life the people that surround you also play important roles. It is also a great compliment to how family, friends and community members support and respect each other. I appreciate the positive messages that Prairie exemplifies.
This story of second chances is sweet, tender and a lesson in the damage of miscommunication. Gunnar has only given his heart away once and Suzannah broke it and Suzannah, who has had her heart broken by Gunnar have an opportunity to become the family they have always desired with the precious Lulah in the middle. For two career oriented people with a energetic four year old there are definitely some ups, downs and compromises that need to be sorted to make it work. And, you’ll want to cheer them on!
It is a truly romantic story that makes your knees weak and your heart flutter.
