Pulitzer Prize–winning author James A. Michener brings Hawaii’s epic history vividly to life in a classic saga that has captivated readers since its initial publication in 1959. As the volcanic Hawaiian Islands sprout from the ocean floor, the land remains untouched for centuries — until, little more than a thousand years ago, Polynesian seafarers make the perilous journey across the Pacific, … flourishing in this tropical paradise according to their ancient traditions. Then, in the early nineteenth century, American missionaries arrive, bringing with them a new creed and a new way of life. Based on exhaustive research and told in Michener’s immersive prose, Hawaii is the story of disparate peoples struggling to keep their identity, live in harmony, and, ultimately, join together.

Like all Michener books once you get into the story it’s hard to put down. Interesting insight into the history of the state of Hawaii.
I read it years ago, but still love it for the stories of families who emigrated to Hawaii and the depth of each character. The history of Hawaii is told through each character and family. The book is very long, but, somehow, it’s still over too soon.
Another great book by a wonderful writer!
Absorbing historical account. Couldn’t put it down…
Was great to read after my recent trip to Hawaii.
Epic!
I enjoy Michener’s works because they are both informative and interesting. The walk through time provides an in-depth understanding of the history and culture behind the story.
Typical Michener–A great yarn(s) that are also educational. Third time I’ve read it and it won’t be the last.
Read years ago, but Michener always did his homework so book doesn’t show it’s age.
The first chapter teaches the development of an island better than science books. Fantastic journey through Hawaii’s growth.
A most excellent book!! I did not read it when it was new; because it was a bargain book on BookBub, I ordered it to read on my Kindle, so I would not have to hold such a heavy tome while reading in bed. I enjoyed every minute of the book and was sorry when it ended!
Always enjoy books by this author
read this Michener book over and over…great read
It is one of my favorites. James Michener is a genius at telling a story, and I love the way he tells it from the very beginning of time. Amazing book!
classic !!!
I have read this book twice and rate it as my favorite book of all time.
This is an epic story of Hawaii and the people that is part of the story from Hawaii’s inception to statehood. It is truly inspiring and epic, a must read for lover of historical fictions.
Have read this book many times. My favorite is the beginning about how the Islands of Hawaii formed. The entire book is GREAT. Following the generations throughout the ages FANTASTIC! Many of Michner’s books follow the same path.
Best book I ever read. Read it about 7 times.
A very moving story showing a history of Hawaii from the very beginning through to American statehood. Each phase of history was told beautifully with very well-developed, convincing characters.
