Pulitzer Prize–winning author James A. Michener brings Hawaii’s epic history vividly to life in a classic saga that has captivated readers since its initial publication in 1959. As the volcanic Hawaiian Islands sprout from the ocean floor, the land remains untouched for centuries — until, little more than a thousand years ago, Polynesian seafarers make the perilous journey across the Pacific, … flourishing in this tropical paradise according to their ancient traditions. Then, in the early nineteenth century, American missionaries arrive, bringing with them a new creed and a new way of life. Based on exhaustive research and told in Michener’s immersive prose, Hawaii is the story of disparate peoples struggling to keep their identity, live in harmony, and, ultimately, join together.

One of the better historical novels I’ve read. Gives the history without the bodice ripping romance.
I’m on a James Michener kick, and I just read his 4th novel, HAWAII published in 1959. I love the Hawaiian islands very much, and to learn about their rich, adventurous history through a novel like HAWAII was a dream come true. The book is thick and daunting, but it’s also a wild read full of daring Polynesians, swashbuckling Americans, resilient …
Absolutely one of the best books I’ve ever read! I am now a James Michener fan and will be reading many more of his books. I loved learning all the history of Hawaii and the author did it in an entertaining way, not boring history. The characters were fabulous, some I loved, others I was not so fond of. This is a must read for all who love …
James Michener takes the history of a location and brings it to life. Hawaii is one of my favorites of his. The part I liked the best was when the islands were first discovered and populated.
This book is a must if you are going to Hawaii or have been to Hawaii. It long, but worth your time.
A very engrossing book, especially if you have been to Hawaii or lived there.
Long but a captivating read.
A wonderful read
Best book I’ve read in a while
Easily worth 4 1/2 stars but not five due to some tedious work-up of background and situational changes. Hang in there for the worthwhile middle and ending of each chapter. So glad that I did.
FANTASTIC
One of my favorite books ever!
I read this book after I had gone on vacation there. I fell in love with the islands, it’s people, the music and the traditions.
This is the first Mitchener historical novel. Turned me on to history, fact and fiction, forever.
I read this book 30 years ago and forgot how extensively James researched the information for his novels. This is a must read if you enjoy history and especially if tou’re interested in Polynesian history.
Great historical novel
Again reread a book you have already read when young. Nobody can write like James Michener.
Michener at his finest.
Looong
Nothing.
A real “slog”.
