Pulitzer Prize–winning author James A. Michener brings Hawaii’s epic history vividly to life in a classic saga that has captivated readers since its initial publication in 1959. As the volcanic Hawaiian Islands sprout from the ocean floor, the land remains untouched for centuries — until, little more than a thousand years ago, Polynesian seafarers make the perilous journey across the Pacific, … flourishing in this tropical paradise according to their ancient traditions. Then, in the early nineteenth century, American missionaries arrive, bringing with them a new creed and a new way of life. Based on exhaustive research and told in Michener’s immersive prose, Hawaii is the story of disparate peoples struggling to keep their identity, live in harmony, and, ultimately, join together.

Michener is a wonderful author
One of my favorite books!
I read most of his book and certainly loved this one. Inspired me to read more books on Hawaii
Michener’s high water mark.
Michener’s books are long, but worth the read. They take you into history and culture like no other.
A fictional historical account of Hawaiian history written by a master storyteller. Left me with an understanding and appreciation for the culture of the Hawaiian Islands.
Does for Hawaii what the Bible does for civilization – the entire history told in a compelling way emphasizing people, their triumphs and heartbreaks in bringing this great state to the for.
One of the best books ever.
I read this book twice. Over 20!years ago and found it most educating , interesting , and one of Michners best. i hope to read it again.
If offered free I would read it again, one of Michners best.
Great book about Hawaii and its people
Great historical fiction. I recommend all of James Michener’s books.
I love this book! Don’t go to Hawaii without having read it! It will enhance your understanding of what you see. It is a novel and an easy way to learn the history. A great read!
I love Hawaii… both the book and the Big Island (where I want to live when I grow up). My love of history, action-adventure, and lots of laughing aloud explains why my three favorite writers are James Michener, Clive Cussler, and Neil Simon. My own writing style seems to have genetically encompassed and blended those three wonderful tale …
Interesting. It keeps you reading to get a picture of how things got to where they are today. Great for anyone interested in history.
What an interesting way to learn history. Sometimes disturbing but then that’s history!
I read this book at least six times between 1972 and 2018, and each time I enjoyed it, as it was the first time. Michener is a master, building characters, worlds, and eras so realistic that you have no other choice than to give him a full recognition of his mastery. I must admit I am also a complete Michener’s fan.
this book gave me all the information that I was looking for. This book along with the Souse and the Covenant were great for learning about an area before going there.
James Michener was an excellent writer. He leads. the reader from early history to the the conclusion of hid storyline. A lot of details based in fact, but with fictional characters who you want to learn morr about. A novel that I didn’t want to put down.
This is a book you will stay up late reading!
