Pulitzer Prize–winning author James A. Michener brings Hawaii’s epic history vividly to life in a classic saga that has captivated readers since its initial publication in 1959. As the volcanic Hawaiian Islands sprout from the ocean floor, the land remains untouched for centuries — until, little more than a thousand years ago, Polynesian seafarers make the perilous journey across the Pacific, … flourishing in this tropical paradise according to their ancient traditions. Then, in the early nineteenth century, American missionaries arrive, bringing with them a new creed and a new way of life. Based on exhaustive research and told in Michener’s immersive prose, Hawaii is the story of disparate peoples struggling to keep their identity, live in harmony, and, ultimately, join together.

Love the way he starts by describing how the islands were formed. Learned about the history of Hawaii, loved the story of the Chinese family. How the mother survived living in the leprosy colony. The love stories, etc. Etc.
Like all of Michener’s books this is wonderfully written. His characters are fully develoved and due to his desire to represent the historical background accurately he is able to provide a story that pulls you in.
I had a better understanding of the state of Hawaii. I loved every bit of it and will probably read again.
Like most Michner books, it takes a while to get into it, but it is a wonderful historical fictional account of old Hawaii. It is impeccably researched that has a ring of truth. Many places and characters are definitely tied to true families and individuals. It is and old, but goody.
Like most Michner Books it is well written and a good read. However one should not read it for an accurate view of the history of region. There are similarities between what Michner describes and the actual history, but the accuracey is not up to Michners standards.
Wonderful attention grabbing read.
Extremely influential in my reading history: it should be required reading for everyone.
Hawaii is one of my favorite books by one of my all time favorite authors.
So informative about the history of the islands and the characters are fascinating, but fictional.
Like all of his works……..Wonderful and hard to put down
I read this one decades ago. I learned a lot about Hawaii and finally got to travel there.
Interesting history of the Hawaiian Islands. Read when it came out years ago.
It’s been years since I read this, but I remember how much I loved it. It’s one of those books that wrap you up in the history, the people, the locale. I plan to read it again. Michener writes in much detail, and some people might say it’s too much and becomes tedious, but he really does his research and is careful to get it right. So, if you …
One of my favorite all time books!
The origin of language and names were a challenge at first. Entertaining and educational.
An epic historical story.
I read this book as a teenager and then again a few years ago . It was just as good both times. Sometimes you just have to go back and read a classic!!
