Getting a job as the first human liaison at Havenfall was a dream come true, until I realize it’s not just humans that don’t want the species mixing.
Someone doesn’t want me a here, and they aren’t making it a secret that … it a secret that they will do just about anything to make sure I don’t stick around.
Seems like I have a few things to teach them about underestimating my determination.

Havenfall Harbor: Book One Kindle Edition
by Albany Walker
A new academy romance from the author of 2019’s hysterically funny Friends with the Monsters, Havenfall turns to the genre on its head. Instead of the new, awkward student, we meet Quinn, a new Human Liaison to the supernaturals at the school. The school, with a storied and long past, is for the home for wayward (read delinquent were they humans) and orphan shifters, vampires and other more than mortal students. She is a strong willed human female who wants nothing more than to help the supes and humans get along.
There is a theme that echoes some of the issues students of color have had in integrating the US. The theme seems to carry throughout without being diminished at all by Ms. Walker’s signature humor that made Friends with the Monsters such a hit.
The lead characters are a fun mix. Instead of the stereotypical character of a suave vampire, we get Griffin Stone, the headmaster of Havenfall. No matter what he tries, his mouth just get ahead of his brain – to hilarious effect. As a counterpoint, we have Evan Winters, the shifter who fills out the love triangle/menage. He is more aware and less abrasive to the complex heroine, Quinn.
Quinn herself is kind, intelligent, incredibly curious and determined to make the world a better place. Her easy affect with the children reminds me of the best teachers I have had. She is the kind of person people are comfortable with to share they longed for wish.
Ms. Walker also lays a few red-herrings about who will eventually fill out the cast. From angry exes to friendly vampires (other than Griffin). Just enough that when Griffin and Evan solidify their plan to keep Quinn it is a touch of a surprise.
While Ms. Walker previous work, Friends with the Monsters, is a Reverse Harem, Havenfall is a menage romance, with Griffin and Evan being Quinn’s partners. It is also super, deliciously slow burn. Wonderful confusions and mistakes litter the story, keeping us on tenterhooks
Told in first person tense that shift between Quinn, Griffin and Evan. Many times, Ms. Walker brilliantly uses the convention of the shifting point of view backing up a bit to the previous bit of the previous narration.
There is a bit of a mystery. Who is harassing Quinn? Who is out to drive her from the Academy? And it leaves us on a cliffhanger.

I had been putting off reading this series, but once I started I couldn’t put it down. Quinn is awesome. I liked that she did not let her fears stop her. I also liked Evan and Griffin. Griffin was kind of awkward, and at times I wanted to shake him. I liked how Evan would at times translate Griffin. I have my theories as to who was behind the “pranks” and I can’t wait for book 2 to see if I’m right 🙂
Havenfall Harbor Book one is a MFM menage romance. While the setting is a high school, this story is definitely not your everyday high school plot. Havenfall Harbor is a school for shifters and vampires. Mr.Stone (vampire) is the headmaster, Evan (bear) is head of security and Quinn (human) is a human/shifter liaison. Their chemistry is tricky, their pasts leave them jaded and yet they can’t stay away from each other. Read to find out how Mr. Stone, Evan and Quinn handle threats, blood and other bumps along the way.
Can’t wait to see where this story goes from here.
