Clarisse has a supernatural gift with a terrible trade-off: she can foretell the future, but new horrors always accompany her visions. Will she accept her abilities, or confront the phantom’s curse that afflicts her? As she faces the cursed taunts and mindless games of an angry … of an angry phantasm that occupies the basement, will this become an affliction of the mind that she can no longer separate from her reality? The phantom is lonely and desperate for someone worthy to take over his curse. When the contract with the evil entity quenches her lust to control future events, it comes at a cost for Clarisse.
What will be Clarisse’s decision? To inherit the phantoms curse or confront it and save the town from the evil incarnate?

I received an Advanced Reader Copy from BookSirens in exchange for an honest and voluntary review
This was a great book!! It is book 2, of the adventures of Clarisse, but can be read as a standalone. This is a very haunting and spooky story. Very well written by author, Janice Tremayne. This genre is most definitely her specialty!! It was a wonderful read!! Not one I would want to read alone in the dark!!
I really love the main character, our heroine, Clarisse!! She is extremely strong!! She is able to see the future, but unfortunately these visions come with a price. I really enjoyed reading about her journey.
This story is set in an Australian ghost town, where spirits need help crossing over. This particular spirit needs help with a curse
I recommend this book!!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book. I am leaving a voluntary review, and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I absolutely adored the Australian ghost town setting, even more so when I checked out the Goodreads page for this book and found a response to a question from the author that confirmed Hartley truly is a ghost town in Australia! This book does a wonderful job of interweaving a very real and grounded setting with the paranormal. The history supplied, while I’m unsure of its veracity, was intriguing and kept me sucked into the tale.
Clarisse was one of those characters who I was drawn to immediately. She was fascinating, engaging, courageous, and made me want to know more about her from the get-go. I also loved Harry. His character played off Clarisse’s so very well.
I can’t recommend this book enough to anyone who loves horror. I don’t read in the genre often, but I quite enjoyed this book!
I loved the fresh take on ghosts in this book. In Haunting in Hartley the ghost has intelligence and an agenda. This is not just an evil spirit that wishes to cause fear… This is a spirit that carries a curse and wishes to place this curse on someone else.
Our MC Clarisse considers a life-altering contract, to take the curse because it can also be considered a gift. However, this gift has a very a heavy price.
This story is incredibly well woven it explores the terrors of the other world of specters and spirits as well as the darker side of humanity.
What would a person do to foretell the future?Could that person resist the temptation of wielding that ability? What happens to a person who becomes consumed by greed and temptation. This book is so much more than a ghost story. I highly recommend it.
I love ghost stories and stories about ghost towns and haunted buildings with keep me reading all night long. In the Haunting Clarisse series, this is book 2, but in fact, you don’t have to read them in order. I’m not sure I’ve ever read Book 1 and had no problems reading Book 2. That being said there will be some cross-over information that may puzzle you if read out of sequence.
There’s a bit of world-building in the beginning. It’s good descriptive prose but tends to go on a little long. I did find myself thinking let’s get into some scares. But it comes around and once the action starts, it’s a non-stop race against a demon and its protégé’s and Clarisse has her hands full just to stay ahead of becoming a subject of the demon herself.
It’s definitely worth the time to read it and once completed, go on to Haunting in Old Tailem Town for the continuation of Clarisse’s training as a spirit hunter.
A very good book 2 in the Haunting Clarisse series. This author writes in a very straightforward way and does not go off on tangents. The story is laid out well and takes you with it from the beginning. Nicely done ghost story with just the right amount of shivers without being overtly gross or violent.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my unbiased and honest review.
When Clarisse’s boyfriend, Harry takes a job in Hartley, Australia she goes with him. Hartley is known as a haunted town with lots of ghosts and demons lurking about. Clarisse is given a task to fulfill and given very strict orders as to how she is to carry out this task but as we all know by now Clarisse does not follow orders too well.
Clarisse’s assigned job is only to unlock the basement door for the delivery guy. She is given strict orders not to go inside but of course, she does just the opposite.
When Clarisse unlocks the door she just has to take a look. You know the old saying curiosity killed the cat, well Clarisse is a very inquiring and scrutinizing person who just has to check everything out.
She can not not look she reminds me of a scene from The Lost World: Jurassic Park movie where Ian Malcolm played by Jeff Goldblum said that his girlfriend Sarah Harding played by Julianne Moore, “she can not not touch”, when she touches one of the dinosaurs.
There is a door in the basement that calls to Clarisse that she must see what is lurking behind it no matter what the cost is to herself or anyone else for that matter or at least not at that very moment in time.
I don’t even think that she stops to give it any thought as to what could happen if she opens that door and goes investigating what is in this room that she was warned about.
There is something evil incarnate waiting for her behind that closed and locked door. I think Clarisse may have bitten off more than she can chew this time as there is something very Sinister and malevolent lurking behind that door just waiting to make a deal, a deal that could cost Clarisse everything.
Will Clarisse makes a deal with the devil? Or is she so much stronger than that? What is lurking behind that closed and locked door? What is waiting for Clarisse on the other side? So many questions that need answering. Oh my, what to do? What to do? Well, the thing to do is pick up a copy of Haunting in Hartley that is if you want to find all the answers.
Haunting in Hartley is a horrifying and spooky fun read with lots of suspense, mystery with enough twists to keep those pages turning. The story is written so well that I could see each and every scene as if I were right there with Clarisse. I could feel and see what Clarisse herself felt and saw.
Janice Tremayne knows how to write a story so vivid that you feel as if you are a part of its world or at least wish you were. She will have you jumping out of your chair with each turn of the page. You will be racing to the end wanting to devour the whole story in one sitting. I can’t wait to read more of her work and hopefully not too far in the future.
I would recommend Haunting in Hartley to all ghosts, demons, and horror fans out there. One-click your copy of Haunting in Hartley for a spooky ole time and to find out what is waiting for Clarisse behind that locked door in the basement!
No one can tell a ghost story like Janice Tremayne! I love this entire series and she is easily one of my fav authors. This story is engaging and I adore the characters. If you love ghost stories then buckle p and enjoy the ride this book will take you on.
From the very beginning, this was a captivating story. I loved the setting in the past, it was a bit creepy and full of interesting history. I was a big fan of the evil in this book. I enjoyed the way it interacted with the characters. I also loved the whole plot with Little Charlie. It was sad and dark, creepy (like any kids in horror movies tend to make it very creepy), and had a great ending. I also liked the mystery wrapped up in the book
It was interesting learning pieces of info and putting them all together with Clarisse and Harry. I can’t wait for the next book! I am really enjoying the author’s works. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I had actually started with Mrs. Tremayne’s second series, Zack Bolder. I was so impressed by her writing I just had to go back to the beginning and I am so glad I did.
Her character building is top notch and her world building is amazing. It’s as if she has actually been to these towns.
This book has unimaginable evil, ghosts, a who done it, a skeptic and one bad ass woman named Clarisse whose will is stronger than steel. I am immediately starting the next book.
I.M.O. you will never be disappointed with a Janice Tremayne book. She really takes here time in researching the book subject matter. So much so that it’s truly impressive.
Story of Clarisse and Harry a delightful couple that compliments each other with their differences. They are in a real ghost town in Australia. Its filled with supernatural phenomena. Facing evil spirits and using your brains to out maneuver the demon. A chilling scary edge of your seat action packed read.
I received advanced readers copy from Booksirens and this is my honest opinion.

“This is a fabulous ghost story packed with plenty of scary moments and a ton of twists and turns that will keep you turning the page. The writing style is simple, getting the job done in a very effective way. Pace-wise, it’s almost spot on. Very impressive.” Male reader, aged 27
“This is as much a mental battle as a ghost story; but it succeeds in both. The sort of book you read with the lights on – or off if you enjoy being a little bit petrified.” Female reader, aged 47
“A superbly-crafted supernatural novel written by an author who knows how to thrill and scare. There’s strong character development in the central protagonist, and the author keeps it going all the way to last page. This is a gem.” Female reader, aged 50
“I was gripped by this story from the very first page. With a strong paranormal element, I’d recommend this to anybody who enjoys horror. If I was to criticize it, I’d say the title was too tame.” Female reader, aged 31

I thought the story telling was positively great.

This is the second book in Haunting Clarisse trilogy. The first book was amazing and this book was even more amazing. The author is number 2 in my list of all time favorite authors. I don’t know if anyone can surpass Stephen King, he’s my number one and has been for over 20 years. Janice is an amazing author and I cannot wait to read the third and last book in the trilogy. This is a recommended series.

“There was a shiver in the group as they all looked endlessly into the darkness of a poorly designed cemetery with only the moonlight that peeked out from the encroaching clouds bouncing off the decrepit gravestones. A gust of wind pierced through the front doors, only to accentuate the eerie feeling.”
Haunting in Hartley is the second book of the Haunting Clarisse Series, but I read it as a stand-alone. The story is based on a real Australian ghost town with a paranormal tour run by a local ghost hunter, mixed with local cultural superstitions. The author creates a haunting, desolate atmosphere in a rural setting that really grabs you.
I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
If you are looking for a book which is spine tingling and has a fluid story line, then this is a must read. The scenario is creepy. Ghosts appear as humans. Add to this a malevolent entity who makes deals with humans and it seems like a no win situation for humans. I liked the depiction of the cast of characters. I enjoyed reading this book.
