Author Interview:
Why such a fascination with the dead and ghost stories?
I grew up listening to ghost stories from my family. My granny’s property was next door to an old churchyard and you could see the headstones through the trees separating the two properties. She’d tell us about haints (spirits) that would wander over and mess with the knick-knacks she had. She also used to tell a story about my how my grandfather’s ghost would lay down on the bed next to her sometimes. Said the old iron bed would squeak. I still get chills when I think about it.
You started out writing fantasy, why the switch to suspense? Funny you mention that. I actually started out writing scary stories. I wasn’t sure people would want to read them, so I wrote my second love, fantasy. About a year ago a friend of mine asked me whatever happened to those ghost stories you used to write. She told me I should start publishing them too, and so here we are.
Why stories featuring a psychic who can see the dead? Well, like most of my characters, she just popped into my head one day and wouldn’t shut up. I thought it would be interesting to write about her life and about the South Carolina coast. I lived there for fourteen years and know the landscape really well. I also have family that’s a lot like hers – all up in your business but that loves you fiercely.
Who would enjoy this novel? Anyone who loves a good scare, a little humor and a crazy southern family full of witches.

Perfect blend of paranormal and humor with a touch of scary.. The main character is Charlie Payne who can see and hear spirits along with being an empath. She comes from a family ones with gifts.. Charlie doesn’t like to call herself a witch but her cousins who have big parts in the book have no problem calling themselves that. On the outside they all live normal everyday lives..
Charlie is a divorced mother of one who works at a call center. Her gift is the reason for her divorce. She has a big heart and loves her family and is very close to her cousins. They are the ones that convince her to go and try to find out what or who is haunting a southern mansion. The owner Susan Tate would like to turn it into a B&B but knows with all the scary things that happen in the house that’s not going to happen.
Charlie immediately feels a presence of evil on her arrival at the house along with tons of tortured souls. Along with one evil ghost she also gets grief from Susan’s son Jason who is a deputy sheriff and non-believer in all things paranormal.
This was a refreshing change from my normal reading and I am enjoying the series so far.
A wonderful escapist read. Follow Charlie, psychic medium and her quirkily magical family as they combat malicious spirits in the Deep South. The evocative setting and the fast-paced, entertaining drama as Charlie manages to evade both a scheming ex-husband and a cynical-but-hot sheriff will hook you in and keep you reading. If you’re a fan of The Medium, this story is definitely for you.
Well written, funny, tale about living life while psychic. Read this in one go, started and just had to know how it ended. Charlie is divorced, working as a call center rep, dealing with a jerk of a supervisor, along with the dead people who are always trying to talk to her (imagine having a conversation with a dead co-worker in the restroom at work) and is part of a family of witches. Her cousins with whom she’s close, decide she should help a woman with ghost problem, never mind that woman’s son is a deputy sheriff and skeptical of anyone claiming to be psychic. A dangerous spirit, a pain in the patootie of an ex-husband, and life in general makes this a good read. I’m on to the next book in the series.
I enjoyed this book. I love finding ones set near me, and ones set along the coast of South Carolina are always fun. Especially when they include evil spirits. This was an entertaining read that kept me interested. I’ll be getting more in this series.
This book was just ok. I felt the characters were all a bit flat and under-developed.
Very few paranormal books hold my attention as they become bodice rippers or so out there as to be too weird. This has humor, scares, relatable people, a good plot and I read it in one sitting and will start the second one tonight.
Charlie is a string, divorced woman with her only child, Evan, living with her ex, a doctor. Scott, her ex, comes from money, and is quite opinionated about ghosts, spirits and etc. Heck, if he sees it, he won’t acknowledge it!
Charlie has wonderful relatives in Daphne, hair designer, Jen, cook extrodinaire, and Lisa, lawyer with attitude. Together they have skills that together can deal with the spirits.
Susan Tate owns a house, haunted by a real piece of work, and he is using his power to kill in the present. Unfortunately, Susan’s son is a deputy and unbeliever and watches Charlie as a scam artist. Charlie is the real thing but busy at a call center to pay the bills…wait till you meet Helen….in the bathroom at work..oh my!
Humor throughout but definite chills and scares and the cousins back each other up.
4 stars
From the first page I enjoyed this read! I just put every one of them in my cart! Happy Reading! What a pleasure…
This was more enjoyable than I was expecting it to be. I’ve been in a book slump and picked a book at random that wasn’t even on my tbr list. I was scrolling through Prime Reading and just went with it and I don’t regret it tbh.
It could be a tad more fleshed out. Charlie is the MC but she has cousins who also have skills so I’m hoping to get a bit more back story to the family as the series goes along. I’m okay with not getting every last drop of background straight out the gate…but I don’t want it dragged out either. But they do talk about having a witch background so that’s a start. I enjoyed the ghost story itself. Not necessarily original but that doesn’t mean it isn’t good. I would like to see Charlie and the detectives relationship grow. So all in all a good book that seems to have gotten me out of book slump.
Very slow and not many turns or surprises. I liked the story and characters, it was just really slow in developing. Charlie is a member of a family gifted with special paranormal powers. Her’s is she can see and speak to ghosts and she sees real happenings in her dreams. Her cousin asks her to help an elderly friend rid an old estate of some troublesome spirits and Charlie finds herself stumbling into some serious crimes and more than just a pack of unhappy ghosts. The story was interesting, but predictable. There weren’t many surprises. I think it needed to be filled out more. I would have liked the author to share more about the special abilities of the cousins and to put a few more twists and turns in the storyline.
