This is not like a romance novella. It is an emotional journey through the lives of our main and secondary characters. It gets slow in the middle, but finishes strong. Bree is good at bringing the reader into the feelings of the book. Another winner!
Broken hearts find healing and renewal in this emotional and warm-hearted novelette. Losing a child is one of the most painful experiences a parent can ever go through and in this, I could identify with both Alistair and Deidre. However, there comes a time when being strong only leads to more pain, and as Deidre experienced, it only when one faces the pain that healing can begin. A letter from the banished Moira sets Deidre on a new course of action, and when a seemingly inconsequential incident occurs, Deidre together with Alistair venture out to discover that life has granted them a second chance. The plot is well written and emotional. One cannot help but be deeply touched as Alistair and Deidre find their way back to each other and hope for the future is restored. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
I really liked this book.
Why?
Because it featured an already married couple facing one of the toughest challenges a marriage can face. The loss of a child.
Set in 1811 in Scotland, you get a bit of the whimsy of a prophecy that set Alastair and his wife Deidre at odds, or is it?
Well done. All the feels. It’s emotional but still uplifting.
Recommend.

I received a free copy of the novella Haunted & Revered The Scotsman’s Destined Love (#15 Love’s Second Chance Series): Alastair and Deidre by Bree Wolf and this review was given freely.
A timely and easy flowing, poignant yet heartwarming and satisfying novella which contains the true meaning of family and a family’s love centered at Christmastime in 1800’s Scotland. This story is emotion packed filled with heartbreak, hope and a love that endures despite misunderstandings, changes and challenges. 2 years after the loss of their 3 month old daughter, grief over the loss of many babies leads the couple into emotional isolation. Just as Deidre fears she may also lose her husband Alistair, the fulfillment of his sister Moira’s puzzling dream promising a great love comes to pass when strangers bearing secrets stay at the castle during the Christmas season.
Gripping, Emotional, VERY REALISTIC
I loved reading this. There is such depth of emotions and feelings between Alastair and his wife Deidre. Their life was full of loss, death and grief. Alastair could no longer deal with the grief and it created a chasm between him and Deidre that she felt if she did not find a way to reach him, all would be lost. She had lost her babe and now was facing losing her husband to the grief. They no longer communicated nor spent time together. It has been two years after Rory died. But then Deidre received a letter that would change her whole life. No one could have predicted the outcome. It took me totally by surprise. A very emotional story. A must read. You will not be disappointed. I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
ONE PHENOMENAL TREAT!!!
Magnificent! Bree not only hit the motherload, she blew the vault wide open, swirling on through and laying it out, blazing this jewel together seamlessly. Mastering a gripping storyline, tossing it into a tailspin with stunning impacts. Unleashing the wonder and thrill, exposing the drama, intrigue, distress, turmoil along with mounting suspense while tension spirals, blasting this treasure to life brilliantly. Producing incredible, well rounded scenario’s, ramping up the anticipation, fueling the adrenaline with such intensity and precision propelling this little guy to a whole new level. Bumbling through the trials and tribulations, along with thrilling twists and sleek turns, grounding in it’s strength and awe inspiring in it’s depth. The characters personalities are well matched and blended with enough of flaws for diversity. The characters and scenes are written with such depth and qualities, playing off one another beautifully. Outstanding job Bree, thanks for sharing this treasure with us.
A fantastic story that will kept reading until the end…
Two souls lost due to the death of their little girl…
The promise of a new love for her, glimpsed in a dream by a seer …
Pains… fear… deep fight for love… and a surprising end…
A book for all…
Beautiful written with a deep understanding of the journey through grief. The author has identified the pain of loss and the courage to find a way to live with the good memories that give the strength to continue on.
Warning!! Be prepared to have a box of Kleenex beside you to wipe away the sad tears as well as the happy tears. What a wonderful Christmas story. Alastair and Deidre have loved and lost and the hope for children seemed a distant possibility, then the Miracle of Christmas happened. They were given the gift of family. Alastair was reunited with his sister and met his nephew for the first time but the greatest gift of all, a baby boy was given to the happy couple. This story reminded me that Christmas is all about miracles.
I was given an ARC of “Haunted and Revered” by the author, Bree Wolf. She never fails to amaze me with her beautiful stories. Deidre and Alastair have had more than their share of trials and tribulations. The loss of their children seems to have caused their hearts to be broken beyond repair. Deidre’s pain intensifies when she thinks she is losing her husband as well. The descriptive emotions are so real that my heart hurt as well for them. A character in the book, Adelaide said, “The wounds one cannot see are often the worst.”
This book reminds me of the importance of couples needing to reconnect every now and then, not falling into a slump and that family sometimes gets lost, but love finds its way to bind us together again. A fantastic story!
This is the latest installment in Bree Wolf’s Second Chance Love series. It focuses on a couple who we have met before-Alastair and Deidre. Though they were very much in love when we first met them, tragedy has dimmed that love. The plot has them fighting to get back to where they were. And then an added bonus makes their lives even more joyful.
There are several characters from past books in this one but Alastair and Deidre are the focus.
I found the book enjoyable. It’s a quick read but one that helps advance the series. Plus, the book deals with a tragedy that many people experience.
Haunted & Revered is another positive storyline from Bree, I throughly enjoy reading her books. Without giving away the whole storyline it is about living with grief and despair – trying to give the one you love happiness even if it destroys your own. But also how one should never give up ‘hope’ – we never know what our future holds and if you hold onto love / hope and fight to keep it alive you may end up receiving your greatest gift in the least unexpected way.
Scotland 1811: Alastair & Deirdre Brunwood have always wanted children but miscarriage after miscarriage seems that they are destined not to be parents & then they have a daughter. They are both bereft when she dies at only a few months old. Determined to harden his heart, Alastair retreats from his loving wife, existing as a mere shadow of himself. His sister Moira sends a note about having a vision of a new love that will find Deirdre by the old ruins up on the cliff top on the day marked by a blue flower.
And then the day of the blue flower arrives…
A lovely, lovely story that really tugs at your heart strings. Alastair & Deirdre have always loved each other but he’s retreated into himself after their daughter’s death & for over a year has been pushing Deirdre away. Deirdre doesn’t know how to break through the wall Alastair has built until a Christmas gathering when John, a guest finds that he can confide in Deirdre but Alastair is consumed with jealousy. The significance of the blue flower is revealed & will warm your heart. A very well paced story that I read well into the night to finish as I just couldn’t put it down. Strong characters & as with the author’s books previous characters make appearances
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
A sweet continuation of a series of rediscovered love. I enjoyed reading the series in order as I find the characters more developed but can be read as a stand alone.
The author does a marvelous job of developing and building characters and plots that draw the reader into the world she creates.
I look forward to reading more of the series and from the author.
Predictable, but still enjoyable.
This is a deeply touching story that pulls on the heartstrings. I often wonder at the deep understanding that this author, Bree Wolf, must have of people and their struggles. The different ways in which we all feel and react to life’s circumstances. Her knowledge is reflected in her writing especially in this story. The agony that Alistair suffered through for two years after the death of his baby daughter did not allow him to let love for his wife back into his heart. And Deidre mourned her daughter’s loss as well as the loss of her husband’s affections. Contrast this with their great joy when the opportunity arose for them to care for a babe that was practically handed to them. If you think that you will be able to stop thinking about this book once the last page is turned then you will be greatly mistaken.
This story touched me so and brought tears to my eyes. I love this series and as the blurb states, is a stand alone, but I love the cross over character’s that appear.
If you or someone you know has trouble conceiving a child this will be emotional. The way the author wrote it was filled with all the emotions you go through. Your spouse may not handle it the same way you do and the author captured this.
This has sadness but makes up for it in a very happy way. The ending was fantastic and I can’t believe this was a novella because the character’s are written with such depth.
There is lovemaking, mostly off page, heat level .5 out of 5.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romance, and tiny bit of spice. Just a wonderful novella! (ljb)
After a long series of miscarriages, Diedre and Alastair were blessed with a beautiful and happy daughter. But after months of happiness, they wake to find her cold in her crib. The two have mourned in different ways through their loss. Deidre is devistated, but looks to the other people in her life to help her cope and navigate her way through each day. Alastair, on the other hand, is desolate and holds his sorrow and pain inside himself whilst turning away from those around him.
As the walls Alastair builds between himself and his wife grow, the vision of a new love in Deidre’s future comes between them. Will Alastair come to realize that their only happiness is if they fight for it together or will he let her go in the belief that he is leading her toward a happier future with another.
______________________________
This is one of the more heart-breaking installments in Bree Wolf’s Love’s Second Chance series. Our main characters have come against inconceivable loss and are struggling to move forward. WIth family visiting for the holiday season there is the heart-breaking reminder that, were their daughter still with them, they would be celebrating the holidays much in the same way as the happy couples with small children that surround them.
I truly felt for Deidre and Alastair and even when Alastair was being stubborn and running from his feelings, I sympathized with his desperate efforts to save both himself and his wife from further pain. Although the ending of the novella is a bit predictable, with some bread crumbs along the way, it is so wonderful to read that I didn’t even mind, I was just so happy that they had found happiness once more.
If you have not read the entire series, this book can serve as a stand alone. But I do think these books are stronger when you read them with prior knowledge of the characters. At the least, I think you should read Abandoned & Protected: The Marquis’ Tenacious Wife in which we first meet Deidre and Alastair and Banished & Welcomed: The Laird’s Reckless Wife, in which we meet them again and get an insight into their life since we last saw them.
This is a beautiful novella and a wonderful addition to the series, one of my favorites from the Love’s Second Chance series. If you have enjoyed previous books in this series by Bree Wolf, or simply enjoy historical fiction with HEA, I recommend this novella to you.

Alastair and Deidre are torn apart by the death of their two year old daughter. Miscarriages and a stillborn baby have given them no hope for having living children. When Alastair’s sister tells them her vision, it may keep them apart forever. A love story full of pain and anguish.
