From New York Times bestselling author Monica Murphy comes a funny, sexy love story about what happens when your best friend’s brother becomes your new roommate. Oh, and you two still haven’t talked about that one night stand you had a year ago… plans to take to the grave.
She’s certain Carter feels the same, since they haven’t talked about it once in the past year. Not that they’ve ever been much on talking. The two can hardly stand each other on a good day.
If there is a single worse idea than sleeping with her off-limits enemy, it’s inviting him to move in with her.
What can she say? She’s bored. Her barista job is her passion, but it seems to be all she has in her life these days. Even fighting with Carter would be preferable to another night alone. Besides, he needs a place to crash after burning out on the Los Angeles grind.
Neither of them expected the chemistry to come roaring back.
Should they admit that one night wasn’t enough? Or will secretly dating each other turn into the epic fail Stella feared?
Only one way to find out…

Fun story with secrets and angst. Hidden romance. Lies and coverups. Stella and Carter has a one night stand a year go. He left without a word never contacting her. When they meet again things are a little awkward and tense. No one knows about their night and they want to keep it that way. He is her best friend’s brother. When Carter needs a place to stay he ends up loving with Stella. Hate turns to friendship to lovers. They both have relationship/commitment issues. They must both find a way to trust in love or walk away.
I haven’t read the other books in this series and I’m honestly not sure why! I loved this one, once I started I was hooked until the very end.
The connection between Carter and Stella was off the charts hot and undeniable. They had slept together the year before when he had snuck out in the morning and now Stella hates him with a passion. Now they end up being roommates after his sister, her best friend, moves out to live with her Fiance.
I loved watching these two navigate the minefield of their relationship. They are both desperate to pretend their night together meant nothing when really it means absolutely everything.
This is book 4 in this series and you don’t need to read the others in before but it has made me want to read them.
This was cute read. I loved Stella and so wanted to smack carter upside the head so many times but I grew to love him as the story progressed
This was a great, fun, sexy read.
About a year ago, Stella Ricci spent a secret hot night with her best friend’s brother, Carter Abbott, while he was visiting town. However, in the morning, he left without a word or note. Now, he’s back home for good. She wants to hate him but her attraction to him is compelling. What doesn’t help is that whole ‘smoldering’ thing he does, every time he looks at her. When her best friend moves out and proposes that Carter move in as Stella’s new roomie, well…this could lead to disaster…or something much more. But, do either of them want more?
“It’s dangerous, how much I like this woman. She makes me forget. She makes me want more.”
Stella and Carter had such fantastic chemistry together. There was no denying that they had a connection. I loved how they naturally fell into a rhythm with each other, and no matter now much they both thought they weren’t relationship material, it was as plain as day that they belonged together. This was a fun, sexy read. Stella’s family made me laugh – I adored Nonna! LOL. Overall, a great read!
I very much enjoyed Monica Murphy’s “Hate to Date You,” a charming, funny, and sweet story that was every bit as delightful as the previous installments in the Dating series have been. Main characters Carter Abbott and Stella Ricci were quite likeable and well-developed, and their back-and-forth banter made me laugh.
I really liked Stella when she was introduced earlier in this series, so I was happy to get to know her better in this story. She was in a tough spot with her family because they placed so much value on traditional gender roles, which is why she felt the need to rebel when she was younger and hide parts of her life from them as an adult. It was nice to see her family start to open up with each other near the end of the book, and especially to see her father and brothers make an effort to listen to what Stella, her mom, and her grandmother had to say.
Carter was also a great lead character, and I appreciated his efforts to get his life and career on track after moving back to Carmel from Los Angeles. He didn’t seem to be very happy as a real estate agent, however, and it’s a shame he wasn’t able to land on a different career path before the end of the story. Hopefully his happy relationship with Stella plus the benefits of living closer to his sister and future brother-in-law will be enough to make up for any dissatisfaction he may still have with his job.
In addition to Carter and Stella, I really enjoyed getting to know Stella’s grandmother, Grace. She was a perfect matchmaker for Stella and Carter, giving them just enough of a push without being overbearing. It was wonderful to catch up with the other members of Stella’s friend group too, especially Caroline and Sarah.
I look forward to reading Stella’s friend Eleanor’s story next! She was so sweet and funny in this book, and I can’t wait to see what fate has in store for her.

Hate to Date you is really an amazing, funny and emotional book. I just loved it!
This book is everything I wanted and needed to read right now. It’s sweet and so funny. I loved Carter and Stella. These characters and their life are just unique and so is their storyline. Carter and Stella were just really easy to fall in love with. The chemistry between those two was over the top. It was sweet and really fun to read their story. And I couldn’t help to fall in love with this book. I just loved the whole dynamic of Hate to Date you. It’s just another great book in this amazing series.
4 1/2 STARS FOR HATE TO DATE YOU!! Wow, what a great story!!! I loved Carter and Stella they were fun to watch. These two will keep you on your toes with their bantering. Looking for a book to escape in for a couple hours here you go.
I just finished reading this book and it was a great read, light, fun and super romantic at times. I thought the author did an amazing job and I have read every single book since the series began. Some of the books I loved more than the others but this one is one of my favorites along with the second book in the series. I cannot wait to read more. If you are looking to read a good story, drama free basically romantic and as I said before easy going, this story is the right one for you.
I have been reading Murphy’s “Dating Series” since book one, Save the Date. This is book four, but you do not have to have read the previous three books to follow along. This book revolves around Stella Ricci and Carter Abbott, Carter being the brother of Stella’s best friend Caroline (from Save the Date). Stella comes from a large, overly protective Italian family (is there any other kind?) and Carter didn’t have the greatest upbringing with a flaky mother. After Carter moves back home after impulsively quitting his job, he’s in need of a place to stay. With Caroline getting married, she’s about to move out of her apartment with Stella. So Stella needs a roommate, and Carter needs a room! It seems like the perfect situation… except Stella and Carter had a rather hot one night stand a year ago. A one night stand where Carter slipped out in the morning without so much as a goodbye. So yeah, things are a bit tense there. Carter goads her into letting him live with her, and from there it’s basically a countdown to the moment where they fall back into bed together.
I really enjoyed this entry in the Dating Series. I think Carter’s character development was done well, though I would have liked to have learned more about his life pre-Stella. There are mentions of his job in L.A., and of having lunch with his mother, but I think having more of those scenes would have really pushed Carter into becoming a fully fleshed out character. We get a lot more of Stella, including how she interacts with her brothers, father, and grandmother. The men in her family have some very old fashioned, outdated views of women which was a bit frustrating, but understandable. Maybe we’ll see one or two of Stella’s brothers in future books. Hopefully they won’t be macho, sexist Italian stereotypes, because I would like to see more from them! And, of course, I loved Stella’s Nonna. I’m a sucker for any story with large, noisy families.
With Stella, I enjoyed her a lot, although I’m not sure I really bought that she was a commitment-phobe. She kept saying she was anti-relationship, but I didn’t really get that from her at all until things came to a head with Carter when he admitted he had feelings for her. I think the fact that she had sex with Carter and then no one else for an entire year speaks volumes on that one. But I know there has to be some conflict there to force them apart for a while.
There only parts I didn’t really get into were when Stella forced one of her friends into flirting with Carter at dinner. I couldn’t think of why this would be a good idea. It felt a bit high school and maybe a tad manipulative. And I am always wary of books that reference a lot of pop culture. It instantly dates the book, which I get isn’t a bother for most people. But I always love reading books where I can get lost in the story, rather than spend it thinking “that song hasn’t been popular in a decade…” This is especially true of books I like enough to want to read again.
Hate to Date You has a lot of fun, witty banter, and I love that Murphy isn’t afraid to get dirty with the sex scenes. Stella and Carter have a lot of fun chemistry together too and I enjoyed them a lot, from the initial prickly move in to when they finally let their guard down to be vulnerable with each other. It’s always nice when a male lead isn’t afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve!
All in all this an entertaining ride from Monica Murphy. Hate to Date You is perfect if you want something light and fluffy to distract you from all of the uncertainty in the world right now.
Monica always makes me fall so in love with her books and characters. Hate to Date you was everything I needed right now. I loved Stella and Carter, I love the tension, the way these two loved each other but couldn’t admit it. Stella and Carter are back back in each others lives, what they say will be platonic, turns out to be so much more.
These two were mean for each other, and while they don’t admit it to themselves they know the feelings they have for one another is nothing platonic.
Monica wrote a book that will make you forget about the real life for a moment and take you on this amazing ride. This was truly an amazing book. A must read!!!
I love a good second chance romance – and Hate to Date You is that and so much more.
Monica Murphy does a fantastic job developing her characters not to mention she writes fantastic dialog and has great secondary characters to help support the story. Carter and Stella’s romance is filled with angst on both sides that makes it interesting and a fun read. More importantly, it’s a great escape when you need it (and boy do we need it). Oh, and you will fall in love with Nonna – trust me she is the best!
3.75 stars–HATE TO DATE YOU is the fourth instalment in Monica Murphy’s contemporary, adult DATING romance series. This is café owner Stella Ricci, and real estate agent Carter Abbott’s story line. HATE TO DATE YOU can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Stella and Carter) HATE TO DATE YOU follows the best friend’s brother relationship between thirty-one year old real estate agent Carter Abbott, and twenty-something café owner Stella Ricci. One year earlier Stella and Carter had a drunken one-night stand but when Stella woke up Carter was gone, and ghosted our heroine for close to one year. Fast forward to present day wherein Carter has returned to his home, having quit his position in Los Angeles, and desperately needs a place to stay. Enter Stella Ricci, his one-night stand; his sister’s best friend, and the woman with whom Carter will fall in love. What ensues is the building but secret relationship between Carter and Stella, and the potential fall-out as Stella is unwilling to commit to something more.
Stella Ricci has always been attraction to her best friend’s brother but struggles with their relationship and their one-night stand. With Carter her new roommate, Stella finds herself willing to accept a friends with benefits relationship but refuses to admit to something more. Carter Abbott knows he screwed up one year before but hopes to convince Stella to give him a chance. Falling for Stella was easy, but Stella refuses to settle down, and in this, pushes Carter out of her life.
The relationship between Stella and Carter is a sister’s best friend or best friend’s brother (however you want to see it 😉 ). Stella is fearful of revealing the truth to her best friend Caroline but Stella’s Nonna sees something between our couple that everyone else is struggling to see. As Carter begins a slow seduction of our story line heroine, Stella begins to pull away fearing losing her friends, her family and her independence. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Stella’s friends Caroline (Save the Date #1), Sarah (Fake Date #2) Candice (Holidate), Eleanor, Kelsey and Amelia; Stella’s parents Vera and Lorenzo Ricci, brother Michael, their grandmother Graziella ‘Grace’ Ricci.
HATE TO DATE YOU is a story of family, friendships, indecisions, and second chances. The premise is engaging and inviting ; the characters are flirty and feisty; the romance is spicy but struggles in the face of Stella’s reluctance for something more.
This is such an adorable story! Carter and Stella know each other and after one night of passion one year ago, Carter up and left. «one year later he is back in town and needs a place to stay. For Stella`s best friend Caroline she will do her best to tolerate Carter her brother. He is in ust with her, but she hates him, Can either one of them commit to something, can they get over what happened a year ago??? This romantic comedy is a page turner and I can’t wait to see what’s next in this series honestly volunteered to review this story.
Hate to Date You
Book 4 Dating Book
(can be read as standalone)
Monica Murphy
Love the characters, Carter and Stella!! This is a very fun, sexy, and entertaining!! Loved it!!
“I can barely score a date anymore, let alone find someone with lifelong potential.”
Can not wait for the next book!! Highly recommended.
This series just keeps on getting better and better.
The lives of this group of friends as they find love is such a brilliant read. I won’t spoil it for anyone, but I never knew Stella had so many insecurities! Not once when she appeared previously would I have said she had ‘issues’. She’s always together and confident so seeing her hidden depths is heart-warming in this story as she finds her feet with Carter. He’s got his own hang ups but he’s quick to realise that its Stella who needs the coaxing to get her to where she can be honest and open with herself, family and friends.
And sometimes a hot man can help with that 🙂
It’s not dark and serious and at this moment in time I wouldn’t want to read that. I need light, fun and readable.
If you haven’t read the previous books, you could get away with it but where would the fun be in that? Get them downloaded and treat yourself to a few days of friends and fit blokes 😉
Thank you, Monica, for being so kind as to let me sneaky peek this one. Lovin ya work!
I am really enjoying this series and all the characters. If you haven’t read them all don’t worry, they can each be read as a standalone. I could not wait to start this book once it landed on my kindle. Stella and Carter’s story is one you don’t want to miss.
Carter is Caroline’s brother and she’s best friends with Stella. He has been living in Los Angeles as a real estate agent. He is burnt out and ready to come home. When he returns, he is excited to be home where his sister and her fiancé live. He knew he would eventually run into Stella and things would be awkward.
Stella works for one of her family’s businesses and her best friend is about to move out. She wasn’t expecting to see Carter and all those feelings are still there even though she is mad at him. After their one night a year ago, they haven’t spoken. He’s back now and for Caroline’s sake she decides to give Carter a chance. They start to build a friendship and quickly realize they still have all that chemistry.
Stella and Carter have great chemistry and the sparks fly when they are in the same room together. I loved Hate to Date You and can’t wait for more in this series. I am looking forward to Eleanor’s story coming next.
Every book in this series, Monica Murphy introduces us to characters that immediately draw you into their world and fall for. I can’t decide which characters in this series are my favorite. Stella and Carter may just be my favorite, these two have known each for most of their life and a one night stand now has these two trying to ignore it. Carter comes back home and Stella has to deal with seeing him more than before. The chemistry between these two has never faded since that fateful night, but will these two ignore the past and continue on with their lives or will they accept the emotions bubbling to the surface and see what happens? Stella and Carter take you on an intensely chemistry filled adventure and you will not be able to get enough these two. This book was a fun, flirty, and sexy read.
I love this world and group of friends that Monica Murphy has created at Carmel by the Sea. I read book one of the series, Save the Date, but have not read book 2 or 3. All of the books in this series can be read as stand-alone books. I have always been a fan of Murphy’s books; however these books have a different feel then her previous offerings. These are fun, lighthearted romance. You still get her dynamic independent women characters going up against these know it all dominating men they just have an easier readability about them.
I fell in love with the character of Stella Ricci when she appeared in book one as Caroline’s best friend. She has a strong and feisty nature. You just know when you get her story there are going to be sparks flying. What I wasn’t prepared for with Stella was her self-doubt and lack of confidence to standing up against her dominating Italian Family. Stella seems a bit lost and unsure of what her future looks like.
Enter in Carter Abbott. Carter is Caroline’s older brother. He left the Carmel area 10 years before to escape his unhappy childhood and make a future and name for himself. Carter went to Southern California and became a real estate agent with hopes of earning a fortune and successes in selling property. A blow up with a girlfriend/co-worker and feeling at odds with his current situation has him moving back to the Carmel area at the instance of his baby sister. Unsure of what his future looks like he is just drifting.
Stella and Carter had a one night stand a year previous that was hot and sexy and fun, but to much intensity for Carter so he totally ghosted Stella. Now that Carter is back in the area and slightly aimless his sister comes up with the brilliant idea that Carter should take over her roommate duties at Stella’s apartment. Stella wants nothing to do with Carter. These two are fight against their feelings so hard. Both seem to lack the confidence to make the first move. Plus, you add in a tiny Italian Grandma, 3 overbearing Italian bothers and a baby sister who is a scammer and you just know this story is going to be great. This is story has passion, laughs and great characters. It was a fun easy flirty read. This is was 4/5 read for me.
I received a complimentary ARC – early release copy of this book in Kindle format from the author for review purposes.
This is the 4th book in the series and I have only read book 2 and 3 and I have really enjoyed them. This is about Carter who is Caroline’s brother. She had a story in previous book and he comes back to town broke, single and jobless and homeless.
Caro wants to move in with her boyfriend/fiancée but doesn’t want to leave her bestfriend and roomie, Stella until she gets the brilliant idea that her brother would make the perfect roomie for Stella. But what she doesn’t know is that Carter and Stella had a one night stand a year before and he took off and never said a word to her after. Until now that is….
Stella has a lot of HATE for Carter and Carter has a lot of LUST for Stella and so if you are thinking this makes for an awesome and fun story, you are absolutely right. This story was fun and hot and I absolutely loved every minute of it.
It easily stands alone but if you want to meet Caroline first, you should her story was a lot of fun as well. However you can also start with this story as it easily stands alone.
