Talon Gold is a lot of things: good at football, bad at love. Obsessed with scoring, refuses to play by the rules. Cruel. Relentless. Brilliant. Intoxicatingly attractive.Despite his demanding reputation and propensity for being the most arrogant a-hole ever to strut Pacific Valley University’s picturesque campus, everyone wants a piece of him: coaches, scouts, and pretty little fangirls with … fangirls with pouty lips and perfect top knots.
But Talon … he only wants a piece of me.
And four straight years of infuriating rejection means I’m almost positive he’d take a night with me over a national championship trophy.
But I’m no fool—he only wants me because he can’t have me. And with graduation approaching, time is running out. He’s more desperate than ever, pulling out all the stops and doing everything in his power to get in my good graces.
They say, “Don’t hate the player, hate the game.”
But to that I say, “Why not both?”
I have my reasons …
Sorry, BMOC. This victory? Not going to happen.

This has to be my favourite book written by Winter hands down so incredible. If you haven’t ever read any of Winter’s books I would suggest reading this one. And I have no doubt you will be addicted. She has a way with words that will get you totally entranced with the book right from the start. Irie is sassy and smart, and Talon has been trying to date Irie since he laid eyes on her 4 years prior.
This book will take you on a roller coaster of pain, redemption, and the best love story you read in your life! Amazing

** spoiler alert ** He is the big man on campus, she is determined to live her dream. One study/class partnership changes everything. Will she allow herself to fall? Will he get everything he never knew he wanted?
Have to say I loved how Talon was so much more than it seemed. I felt for everything she had gone through and loved how she was determined that her future was going to be different. I loved how in the end he finally stood up for both of them and was determined to live his life on his terms and not on others. Great read!
The premise of this story is a good one and could have become an excellent book if there hadn’t been so little understanding of the subject material on the part of the author. A hopeful candidate for the NFL does not have money thrown at him without going through the draft process. This took me out of the story from the very start and it was hard to get back into it. I wanted more backstory for why the h rebuffed the H for four straight years instead of a slow burn up to what can only be described as instalove. There were simply too many continuity and believability errors to make this more than a 3* read.
Extremely entertaining, captivating and interesting sexy read. I could not put it down. Wonderfully written with strong, intriguing characters. I want to read more from this author.

Such a good book! Couldn’t put it down! Couldn’t put it down. This book has it all. Talon and Irie both have some things in their pasts, but they realize they are more alike. While Irie doesn’t want to give him the time of day…he has pined after her for four years. She finally starts to see him and their chemistry is hot!

Hate the Game was a great, sweet, slow burn, sports romance. The chemistry between Irie and Talon was undeniable. Enjoyed their story.
A great romance. Such a great story about true love. A good book for a rainy day or curling up to a fire. Sweet ending.
Another great book by Winter. I’m never disappointed when she releases a new book. I do love sport romances and Winter writes the best of them. I absolutely love this book and Talon and Irie are one of my favorite book couples. I loved their relationship and I especially love Aunt Bette. She made me laugh. This book was so good I could talk about it all day!! Great book.

DNF – Not what I expected from the book description
I hate giving a bad bad book review to an author that I have read previously and liked. But from my POV with Hate the Game Winter Renshaw throws the reader a major curve ball (sorry for the sports analogy but it just seems to fit here). The book description does not really reflect what the actual story-line is. Yes it has a football player and a young woman, both of whom are in college and getting ready to graduate. But from there it goes in directions that I was scratching my head about and rolling my eyes.
For me I DNF and what I was able to get through I did not like.
BTW – yes the story itself is well written by that author, as she is can write. It was just the plot and devices that did not work for me.
I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are all my own.
As soon as I saw this book was released I had to get it and I am glad that I waited till after I read heavy book to read this cause I knew I would enjoy this story.
The thing about this book I think it really showed you that you shouldn’t judge someone by what you hear from others and you should really judge for your self
Yes Talon was the popular QB but to me he wasn’t like every QB we read he knew what he wanted when it came to Iire and he wasn’t going to stop till he got her. The thing that I loved was there was so much inside Talon that I never expected and I loved peeling back the layers as we got to know his story.
Iire she was interesting and it was so good to see her trying to resist the QB but as her story unfolded you could understand why she kept saying no to Talon. She had been through quite a lot and really never felt loved so this was hard for her to let anyone in and Talon had to break them down.
I really liked this book it was just what I needed at the time and I have to admit Aunt Bette was my favourite character the oldies always melt my heart in these stories.
I really like this book and if your a fan of Winter Renshaw you won’t be disappointed and if you haven’t read her yet put her on your list she is a must read author.
A slow burn college sports romance. It was a fast and easy read with a good plot. An enjoyable read but I wish there had been a bit more backstory with how/why Talon was so interested in Irie and why she meant so much to him for so long. But I was happy with their relationship once Irie gave in to Talon and they got their HEA.
Talon has wanted Irie ever since he first saw her but she wasn’t having it. Now years later they were in a class together and he wasn’t going to waste his chance to get her to go out with him. Irie lives with her great aunt Bette who pays for her schooling but with this last semester closing soon she has to make a decision about where she is going to work in her future. Talon is heading to the NFL so she doesn’t trust that he isn’t after her for just a hook up. What will happen once Talon convinces her to give him a chance? Can they be together?
This is a great story once I started it I couldn’t put it down. The chemistry between them is sizzling hot. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.
Talon is the quarterback for the school and everyone wants him except for Irie. Irie is determined not to give in to Talon. He’s hot but she’s not going to be a notch on his bed post. Talon knew the minute he met Irie during their freshman year that she would be a special person in his life. Now he wants her and is trying to convince her to give him a chance. Will Iris give in? A steamy slow burn read with a sweet, sexy alpha male hero.

Irie and Talon were pure gold together. They come from completely different worlds, but both are determined to leave their past behind. Talon was totally unexpected. In most ways he was your typical jock with a reputation that follows him around campus. Irie has lived in the world where the Football star rules the campus and can do no wrong, and she does her best to run the other way. When they are forced to work together, Irie sees beyond Talon’s reputation and is able to see the sweet, smart and loyal man that Talon truly is. He is so unexpected and she finds herself falling. Talon’s actions and loyalty to Irie was completely uncharacteristic of a young college football star, but he turned out to be a breath of fresh air. Sweet love story with a beautiful ending.
I love this man with his heart of Gold
Winter Renshaw is a must read for me, and I really enjoyed this college aged read where the past experiences teach a really hard lesson to our heroine who in turn casts rather harsh judgments over others.
Yeah, Irie was no shrinking violet, but she’d suffered the most cruel of betrayals at high school, that would be hard for any lively young lady with a ‘normal’ family to cope with. Compound that with the puritanical relatives who had taken her in after the death of her mother, and you cannot wonder why her attitude towards Talon was decidedly negative!
I loved Talon Gold, and this book epitomises the judgement that society puts upon any person. The choice whether to live up to it, or live ‘in spite’ of it, is what makes the character of that person, and he is everything and more.
Yep. Great read. 4 Stars.
Hate the Game is one of those quick and easy reads that is perfect to cleanse your reading pallet after a difficult or heavy read. It is a New Adult Sports romance with some sweet characters and just enough angst to make it enjoyable and keep you reading. Winter Renshaw never seems to write a bad book and this one should definitely be added to the growing list of great books that she has written. 4 Solid Stars!
Talon is a football star at Pacific Valley University (PVU). He has been offered a tremendous offer to go to Richmond. But something is keeping him from signing. Irie is studying Interior Design and is a bookworm. Talon keeps asking her out. When he finally gets to work with her during a class, he starts to break down her walls. Irie can’t help but like Talon as he isn’t what she initially thought he was. But she still thinks that all he wants is to have sex with her. So Irie tries to play it cool. But as they both get to know each other, things start heating up. Loved their interplay and the backstory on each of them was interesting. Loved how Talon just doesn’t give up. Talon Gold is the quarterback at Pacific Valley University and the most sought out guy on campus by everyone. Yet there is one girl who has continually turned him down since freshman year no matter how hard he has tried. He’s at the top of his game and headed towards a future in the NFL.
Irie Davenport has dreams of becoming an interior designer and has an offer for when she graduates in North Malibu. She lives with her great Aunt Bette and is focused on finishing school and moving on with her life.
Yet slowly Talon breaks down Irie’s walls and gets her to agree to a date but Irie has already had her own experience with a quarterback and has no desire to repeat it. With Talon and Irie heading in two different directions after graduation will each be able to overcome their own demons and find their happy ever after?
This is such a good book and I loved it from beginning to end!
At first Talon seems to be “another quarterback” but slowly we learn that there is so much more to him and he isn’t happy with where he is in life. It was kind of heartbreaking as I think it really shows us how parents live their own lives through our kids and we really need to make sure that our kids are living their own dreams. I was shocked at what Talon’s stepdad, Mark Masterson, was doing to him.
Irie had her own difficult past and I was surprised about everything that happened in her childhood. I definitely did not like her aunt and uncle who raised her and how they treated her and never supported her when she went through some difficult times. Again it goes back to the power of social media and how it can destroy someone. I loved her relationship with Aunt Bette and how she wanted Irie to be happy.
I really liked how Talon was able to finally get through to Irie to give him a chance and go on a date with him. Slowly he was able to get her to give him a chance and he was able to show her how much he cared and how they were both “fighting” their own demons.
I was so mad at Talon’s mom and step-dad for their involvement in everything and really not caring about what Talon wanted in his own life. I loved that Talon never gave up after they interfered and was able to prove to Irie how much he cared!
The very end was awesome and I can’t wait for more from this author!!
