There’s a killer on the loose in the sleepy South Carolina island town of Pawleys Island.A roguishly handsome yet reluctant hero and a cast of the most memorable characters you’ll ever meet collide in this zany and raucous tropical thriller by David Berens.
Rambling beach bum, Troy Bodean, is the new owner of an outback tea-stained, straw cowboy hat with a colorful peacock plume. He found the … peacock plume. He found the unlucky hat in an abandoned aluminum fishing boat and decided the smell of Old Spice and lack of an owner made it his for the taking. Little did he know there was a misplaced cashier’s check hidden inside.
Unbeknownst to our hero, he’d attracted a whole bevy of killers out to kill him when he put the hat on his head. From Daisy Mae and Ellie Mae Gallup, the mothers of Troy’s alleged love child, to the bumbling New Zealander assassins, Darren The Body McGlashen and Man’Ti, to the most Böhring, yet shady mill CEO in the business… they all have one thing on their minds—get that hat.
And Troy has no idea why. Laugh, ache, and groan as the chase for Troy and his hat lead him on the wildest ride on and around Pawleys Island, South Carolina in history. Who knows where it will all end?

Not believable and boring.
Quite a stretch of the imagination; almost too much sometimes. Maybe I read it too fast but I recall often not understanding (and now even remembering) why and what is the point of the two sister strippers in this story, but the whole thing was sort of amusing as long as you don’t expect too much.
Good story.
Silly and trite. I can’t decide if the author was trying to write a comedy or be serious. Loads of violence but the main character is so “aw shucks” that he’s not believable. One and done for me.
It was fun, but corny in places.
very good and funny too
The author attempts humorous and acieves only the ridiculous. Characters are buffoons. The bad guys are jokes (Really? Gangreen from cutting off toes while tipping over in a recliner?!?) the main police character, Chesney Biggins, was an embarrassment. He stopped for coffe while on his way to an urgent call, spilled his coffee, and t-boned an ice cream truck. Gwt real. Don’t waste your time on this book.
A looney light read.
Slap stick comedy. This would make a good movie!
The only word that comes to mind is weird. Perhaps if it was in the “fantasy fiction” genre it would have made more sense. I doubt I would recommend this book to a normal person. On the other hand, I did read it to the end!
Made me laugh, lots of coincidental appearances of characters from the past now integral to the plot.
A bit too far fetched to be realistic or believable.
This book was too predictable.
The intended audience must have been adolescent. Really poorly composed. I could not complete the book.
Set in coastal South Carolina. For sake of dark humor, characters are over-drawn, action scenes are particularly bloody, and the plot itself is full of near-impossible accidents and coincidences.
Felt like I was there.
Would make a great movie.
Loved it!!
enjoyable, quick read
Wasn’t crazy about thus book in the beginning. Many strange characters, but as the book developed, I started to like the main characters. Plan to read the next in the series.
