There’s a killer on the loose in the sleepy South Carolina island town of Pawleys Island.A roguishly handsome yet reluctant hero and a cast of the most memorable characters you’ll ever meet collide in this zany and raucous tropical thriller by David Berens.
Rambling beach bum, Troy Bodean, is the new owner of an outback tea-stained, straw cowboy hat with a colorful peacock plume. He found the … peacock plume. He found the unlucky hat in an abandoned aluminum fishing boat and decided the smell of Old Spice and lack of an owner made it his for the taking. Little did he know there was a misplaced cashier’s check hidden inside.
Unbeknownst to our hero, he’d attracted a whole bevy of killers out to kill him when he put the hat on his head. From Daisy Mae and Ellie Mae Gallup, the mothers of Troy’s alleged love child, to the bumbling New Zealander assassins, Darren The Body McGlashen and Man’Ti, to the most Böhring, yet shady mill CEO in the business… they all have one thing on their minds—get that hat.
And Troy has no idea why. Laugh, ache, and groan as the chase for Troy and his hat lead him on the wildest ride on and around Pawleys Island, South Carolina in history. Who knows where it will all end?

A hilarious Carl Hiaasen-esque caper. Great summer reading.
A Madcap Murder Mystery
David Berens is a new author to me, but after reading only a few pages I found I enjoyed his humor. I’ve tried writing humorous stories before and I can honestly say it’s not nearly as easy as it seems. So, when I run across a humorous book in the thriller, suspense, or mystery genre I love, I’ll give it a read.
The southern slang drew me in further as it reminded me of my roots. I found myself skimming through pages to find out what happened next. Being raised in the south, I have been to Pawleys Island on several occasions and I always love a story where the setting is familiar.
Overall, Rogue Wave was a fun mixture of mystery, mayhem, and madcap, set on a beautiful island off the coast of South Carolina. If you like a dash of humor in your mystery, give Rogue Wave a try.
Favorite line: “Rick Hairre had not known before today that the barrel of a gun tasted like pennies.”
After reading this book it leaves me wanting more and more.
Suspenseful, wouldn’t let you put it down.
Great page turner
Little slow but a good read.
If you want your hero to ride away into the sunset, this is your kind of action and adventure. Good characterization lots of excitement, an unusual plot, and a bit of treasure hunting.
Great read. Didn’t want to put it down.
Real life characters that you get attached to and want to find out what happens.
Really good book
It is a good first attempt, looking foward to the future
Great action book… Would highly recommend
The characters in David Berens’ story are just flawed enough to seem real. Great story line with unexpected twists of humor – a fun read!
David writes excellent tropical stories that easily transport me to the sand and the complex characters who live there.
This is another winner from David Berens. I can not get enough of his writing. Not only a fun story but one that will keep you chuckling. It is hard to put down once you start. If you are a fan of Troy you will learn how he got his straw hat in this book. Loved it.
A great detective mystery, and funny as all get out. This author is crazy good.
Ex-Afghanistan veteran, now a fisherman/home-owner, Troy Bodean is generally a happy-go-lucky fellow, making his living by selling the lobsters etc he catches near his beach-front home on South Carolina’s Pawley’s Island, where he relaxes and watches the world go by from his front deck,in Rogue Wave,David F Berens’ first book in the A Troy Bodean Tropical Thriller series.
When crooks in high places fall out and one pays the ultimate price for his hubris,Troy becomes accidentally embroiled in the fall-out,while propping up the bar at his local watering-hole. One of the waitresses just happens to be the stepdaughter of the victim, who’s staying at the house next-door to Troy’s. Laura doesn’t realise that now he’s dead,’Rick Hairre’s not only made her a target,(by having transferred his $500k backhander for his ‘services’ to his killer,to her bank account), but has also put a $7 million blank cheque in the last place his killers would ever have thought to look for it. Troy gains his trademark-to-be straw cowboy hat ,plus a whole heap of trouble, when he meets and helps Laura and her gal pal Karah, who’s staying with her.
Many shenanigans and a little romance follow, while a hilariously incompetent thug (and his hapless partner in crime),chase the money and ‘cherchez la femme’, Their would-be-deadly antics and misfortunes will require you to have a steady supply of tissues to hand – to mop up after your paroxysms of hysterical laughter – and a couple of maxi-pads for those with weak bladder muscles!
The action is non-stop and you’ll find yourself so entranced and completely absorbed by David Berens excellent story-telling,,that you won’t want to miss a single word of. Get your copy today, then settle down for a roller-coaster ride on an amazing Rogue Wave of a Tropical Thriller, starring the one and only Troy Bodean.
You’ll love this 5-star crazy comic eye-popping adventure,(and the next 5 that are already published, for your future delectation) – guaranteed!
This was an enjoyable read. It reminded me of Tim Dorsey or Carl Hiasson. Good story with a few laughs.
The action scenes are realistic and makes you want to put on a life jacket! Wonderful descriptions for the technologies in use. The plot thickens and twists at the end… Don’t get in over your head, Wait till the next wave hits.
Inconsistencies and unrealistic happenings made me want to quit, but this was recommended to me. So I finished it.
