I have read all of the books in the series. The narrative started out as entertaining for young and old and ended up pretty dark. This made them less appropriate for young children.

The collection is very well planned. The earlier books are shorter and easier reading. As the subjects grow (and the readers as well) the books become more complex. The basic story is the same concept as King Arthur and Star Wars. A young orphan is taken under the wing of a mentor with special skills. The recounting of this story is well done and very readable.

Imaginative and fun for both adults and children. Great way to get your children interested in reading. Rowland takes a familiar story line about a boy at boarding school and adds an ingenious twist to it by making it a school for magic with the requisite villain who is a bad wizard. Her creation of memorable characters, magical creatures, and a complete environment that adds a background of spells, and effects of magic on on our every day experiences such as going shopping, visiting the bank, etc. The first books in the series are more than suitable for an adult to read to a younger child and have a great experience in doing so.

Everyone should read the Potter series. You have to suspend realism and accept the various life forms but it blends to be great entertainment.

This is a fascinating series with plenty of action and great characters. As a retired children’s librarian, I was absolutely thrilled with the success of Harry Potter. Entire families shared them and loved them! And if you know them, you know how long they are and that did not deter the readers. Highly recommended!!
