I guess you all know the drill by now, when I don’t have too much time or when I have some extra time, I always try to fit in a Laura Greenwood novel. This morning I was getting ready to return home after a two week stay at my parents. So, I really didn’t have that much time. Luckily I had a few more Laura Greenwoods, which fitted perfectly in the little time I had to read. And I started my day with this book, which meant I started my day with a smile on my face.
Yes, in a way the plot of the book was a little predictable. Before the characters figured out what was going on, I had already figured it out. However, that didn’t lessen the fun. On the contrary. From start to finish this book was gripping and interesting. That’s partly because it’s quite fast paced and really moves forward, but it’s also because Harper’s job comes with some really exciting and interesting situations, like the big case in this book.
I also really liked the characters in this book. Of course, we spend all our time in Harper’s head, so therefore I feel we know her the best, but she’s not the only lovely character in this story. Even though Greenwood’s books are short and fast paced, she always manages to give a great impression of the main and side characters. In this book we also get a few scenes that are really telling about both Harper’s colleagues’ personalities.
Harper herself is just a joy to read about. I like how she is eager to succeed in life. Maybe she’s a little too eager and lacks a bit of experience, but that also makes her enthusiasm and her drive to prove herself contagious. And although Harper is brave and doesn’t shy away from getting herself involved in hard and dangerous situations, it never makes her reckless or stupid. She takes calculated risks and she does think before she does something that’s maybe not always the smartest.
I’m excited to read more about these characters and the case!
This is book one of the Supernatural Retrieval Agency series and the main character is Harper the Harpy, and yes, she has received many comments about why her parents named her this! Since she was about seven, she has wanted to become an agent of this agency and luckily for her, her parents supported her in this and helped her study and train, so she would be fully prepared once she was old enough to apply. She got through the interview and training and is now ready for her first day of work. She thought her first day would be a simple day of getting used to the routine in the office and having her induction, but their boss has a different idea of what she should be doing. She meets her partner and fellow Harpy, Elias, and suggests a practice fight to see what he is like. After that, they find they have a real case where their wings will be of use to arrest a drug dealer. The stakeout gets complicated as another person joins the drug dealer and they have to strike. Harper catches the woman whilst the drug dealer gets away, but she ends up being a much higher arrest, as she is actually wanted for murder.
Their boss isn’t happy that they didn’t get their man, even if they took a murderer off the streets and now he has another mission for them, which Elias tries to refuse as his plan is far too dangerous, especially for Harper. But they don’t get much chance, she either does it or look for another job! A very bully boy boss, who the other agents are used to a little, but which doesn’t save them from his bite much either! They manage to uncover a secret underground crime ring, named after a mythical figure and are sent to do more reconnaissance, but are in the wrong location. They get word of a witness who has been kidnapped and their new case is to infiltrate the secret location where this person is being held and then Elias and other agents will come and free them both. But they have all been played and their witness is not who they seem, neither is the kidnapping location! They have to try and figure out what went wrong and how they can possibly fix it, without getting into any more danger. This is a short story, which introduces us to Harper and the agency, as well as some other supernatural beings and a bit of attraction that may lead to romance. A great start with a supernatural being I’m not used to hearing off, so I can’t wait to see what their powers can bring to the table and how Harper finds her new job and the agency. This was a fun, fast paced and interesting start to a series. I really like Harper as a character and I’m looking forward to seeing where this series goes.
