It took only one winter day for Manhattan socialite Harper Ryan’s life to be upended. A murder, a mistress and the mob landed right at her feet. Harper isn’t sure what to do about it or even where to start. When the FBI asks for her help to dig into her husband’s business dealings, Harper balks. She’s the editor-in-chief of her family’s magazine, not an investigator. But the FBI never said … helping was a choice. Harper turns to the only person she really trusts, her Aunt Hattie. Even though Harper’s aunt is far away living in Little Rock, Hattie’s psychic clarity and bit of witchy magic might be Harper’s only saving grace. Hattie’s got more than that up her sleeve though. With a new stranger in town, Colonel Jackson Morris, Hattie is determined to figure him out. Plus, Hattie needs to convince Harper that she has her own magical powers before the whole family’s legacy goes down the drain, if only Hattie can get the poor girl out of her current predicament first.

This the 3rd book from this author that I have read. Each one of them leads the reader down a different path. In this one the story starts with Harper at her aunt’s home during the summer. Harper’s aunt, Hattie, is a person possessed with unusual powers. As the story goes on, Harper is now in NYC at working at her father’s magazine. during this time, Hattie has told Harper that her life would be changing in ways that she did not expect. It starts with Lola, a person who was friends with her husband and is followed by a death of a friend’s husband who just happens to work with Harper’s husband. Latter, she is met by a member of the FBI and New York State Police. What information she learns will turn her life upside down.
As the story continues, Harper will see that Hattie is right in her readings. To discover all that happens in Harper’s life and why she will go visit her aunt, then you must read this book. You won’t be disappointed.
A great little mystery that makes me want to read more of the series.
I really enjoyed meeting Harper and Hattie in this short story. I didn’t want the story to end. I want to know what the future holds for Harper, and Hattie as well. The story was well-written and well-told by a wonderful author that shares entertaining stories while keeping it clean (no sexual situations, foul language, or graphic violence) which I appreciate. I am looking forward to binge reading this series throughout the next week.
“The trouble starts when the magic is lost”
Harper’s life is pretty sweet. Editor-in-chief of the family’s decades old lifestyle magazine; she’s married to a successful man she loves, and they’ve a beautiful home. Everything is perfect.
Until it isn’t. There’s an affair. There’s something definitely illegal going on at Nick’s business. The FBI pay her a visit. Her father is railing on her to not “embarrass the family”.
Playing an integral part in an investigation that she really just fell into, Harper is reeling at the discoveries she’s made.
This is the teaser episode in the series. The prequel that introduces you to some of the characters you will come to know and love. I read this series a bit backwards – I started with an ARC of Book Three, then continued on to the Prequel then Two and One – so I can say with confidence that they are all great read as standalones. But don’t. Jones has a knack for framing even slightly unbelievable events in a way that simply makes them real.
The Ryan women are formidable, and that’s something that shines out right from the first words you read. I am hooked, I know you will be too!!!
A novella that will make you want to read the series! This is an amusing cozy read, with some magical tricky twists….You’ll come to enjoy getting to know Harper with her perplexing talents and turns of events. She’s more resilient than she thinks. Her beloved and quirky Aunt Hattie is lovable and holds the key to the family legacy. As events unfold, you’ll be solidly in Harper’s corner as she comes to understand one after another surprising discovery. And what really is her “folly”? Highly recommend! First time I have read this talented author who graciously provided me with a free ARC and I am pleased to leave a very honest review.
Harper’s Folly is a prequel novella to the Harper & Hattie Magical Mystery Series but is read as a standalone. A lot of mystery, a little bit of magic, some hokus pocus and more twists than you can imagine. There’s a lot of action packed into this short novella, not to mention the FBI, the mob and some bad deeds by her husband. A cute book that will have you page turning and wanting more. I read an arc and voluntarily chose to write a review.
Received a free copy for a review from author. I loved the story, Harper and her Aunt Hattie. Great beginning for a series.
I had a little trouble at the beginning understanding this story line. It started out slow for me. It’s not a real nail-bitter of a mystery. The magical aunt part is not developed. Maybe that will be more in the next book. There are grammatical errors so I took a star off. I received a free copy through Bookfunnel. This is my voluntary review.
I found this book to be interesting and engaging. The main character, Harper, is a strong an awesome. She has grown up without her Mother. She doesn’t really fit into the world her Father wants and pushes onto her. When she is confronted by several things going wrong at once, Harper wonders if she should start searching for the life she has always wanted. I highly recommend this book. I am looking forward to reading more books by this author.
