I just love B. J. Daniels. I have most if not all of her books. This one didn’t disappoint either. It was full of intrigue and suspense. I loved Annie (Annabelle) and Dawson. Of course all of her heroes are everything you will expect a hero to be. Dawson was no different. I look forward to reading more of this series about the other sisters.
If you love cowboy romances, then you have to read this one. it is a keeper!
BJ Daniels is an excellent writer! If you like romance and who done it you”ll love her books. Would tell anyone looking for a good book this one is it!
She broke his heart when she left him to seek fame and fortune thirteen years ago and now she’s back. Can he forgive her and rekindle the love that never died? This heartwarming story of learning who you really are kept me turning the pages. Mix in solving the mystery surrounding her grandmother’s secret life, a jewel heist, and a bevy of mobsters and this story was a winner for me.
Intrigue , suspense, romance. All in a small town western setting. This is for all the cowboy lovers out there who like suspense with their romance. I would have enjoyed more of a break neck pace from start to finish but it was still a good read overall.
Love anything by B J Daniels!
Dawson Rogers is helping Annie Clementine so she can leave town however they uncover a mystery that must be solved before either is harmed. Settle in to a comfortable chair since this tale is a page turner you won’t want to put down. Enjoy this author’s tales of Whitehorse , Montana and look forward to reading the rest of the series.
Ebook from netgalley and publishers with thanks. Opinions are entirely my own.
Good second chance romance with a very intriguing mystery to go along with it. Annie had grown up in Whitehorse, but couldn’t wait for the day she could leave to follow her dreams. Unfortunately, that also meant leaving behind the man she loved, breaking both their hearts. Thirteen years later, she’s back in Whitehorse, broke, with her high-powered modeling career in shambles. All she has left is her grandmother’s house, which she’s determined to sell as quickly as possible, and leave again. The last person she wants to see is Dawson.
Dawson is not at all happy to see Annie back in town. He has worked hard to convince himself that he’s over her, but as soon as he sees her again, he knows he’s in trouble. In order to protect himself, he offers to help Annie so that she can leave sooner, thereby hopefully saving himself some heartache.
Annie did not come across as a very nice person at the beginning. From her attitude about the cowboy who helped her to her opinion of the town, she seemed snobbish and stuck-up. Considering the state of her career and her finances, I wondered if she had brought it all on herself. I did feel sorry for her when she saw the condition of the house, as it was stuffed with all kinds of junk. I softened a little bit toward her when she ran into Dawson’s mother and was actually pleasant to her, giving me hope that there was a better person hiding inside the snotty exterior.
I enjoyed the rekindling of the relationship between Dawson and Annie. It’s clear from the start that the attraction between them is just as strong as it was thirteen years ago. As much as he tells himself he wants her gone, Dawson can’t stop himself from coming to her rescue over and over. These rescues hit Annie right in the pride, as she doesn’t want Dawson to know just how far she’s fallen. I got a little frustrated with her attitude when she would lash out at him. Dawson had the patience of a saint to put up with it. But eventually the antagonism faded and that simmering attraction started to heat up. Dawson can feel himself falling all over again, and knowing that she’s planning to leave, that his heart will get broken again. Annie’s feelings are also growing, but she can’t see Dawson trusting her a second time. Even when they shared their feelings, they didn’t take it to the point of actually talking about wishes or expectations, leaving each believing there was no chance. I loved the push that Dawson’s mom gave him, telling him he needed to make a “grand gesture,” though nobody expected the kind of gesture he ended up making. I loved the ending as Annie decided to go after what she wanted.
The suspense of the story was very good. As Annie started going through her grandmother’s house, she discovered that her grandmother had been keeping some very interesting secrets. I loved seeing the layers as they were revealed, with each one being more amazing than the last. But Annie and Dawson weren’t the only ones interested in unearthing Frannie’s secrets. There was someone else who was equally determined, and he wasn’t going to let anything get in the way. Getting the viewpoint of this player added an extra layer of intensity, especially as Dawson and Annie came closer to discovering the truth. The final confrontation had me on the edge of my seat, especially as it came with a couple of unexpected twists. The best part of all was finding the missing jewels and where they were hidden.
Oh the suspense! I was kept guessing. This was a quick read for me, I just couldn’t put it down. I stayed up way to late finishing it but the ending was intense! So many secrets unfolded all at once.
LOVE B J DANIELS WRITING! ALWAYS A PAGE TURNER, WAITING TO FIND OUT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!
My favorite thing about a BJ Daniels’ book is how she has several characters being spotlighted during the book and what is happening to them, along with the main characters so there is, in a sense, multiple storylines going on, along with the main storyline! It makes for fantastic reading! I can’t put down one of her books once I start it! This book was no exception! I was thrilled to go back to Whitehorse again. Although we meet new characters, there are some returning ones too. I would personally classify this book as more mystery than suspense but I still enjoyed it very much. The two main characters, Annabelle and Dawson, were high school sweethearts but Annabelle was made for bigger things and had to leave this small Montana town for the world of modeling. She’s come back to Whitehorse to sell her grandmother’s home but doesn’t want anyone to know she returns broke and without a job. She finds out some amazing and disturbing things about her grandma that she never expected. THAT’S when the mystery begins! You’ll have to read the book to find out what happens! It’ll keep you turning the pages quickly, I guarantee it!
I received this book from the publisher but was not required to leave a reivew. All opinions are my own.
Thrilling beginning to what promises to be a highly entertaining new series, emotionally engaging and sweetly sexy romantic journey.
Annabelle “Annie” Clementine is back home just long enough to sell her inheritance and get back to her real life….. Dawson Rogers is the one she left behind and he is willing to help her get the sale done so she can leave asap…. page turning adventure that keeps you guessing… loved it.
A good read. B.J.Daniel never fails to keep me interested and engaged.
I do believe I have been roped in again to another one that will lead into several more. This author knows how to take the characters with having them come off the pages to lead us by the nose. In this one Annie comes back after a declaration years ago. Having been left something with not other way she dives into more than one thing or another. Secrets will be hidden that will find its way out with grandma being center stage in them. Dawson can not help himself but then when love is involved that usually will be the case. Follow these two as a mystery comes to light with pieces to fit in a puzzle that will lead to many of exhilarating reading. Head bumping done so well a chuckle or two can be had also. Captivating from beginning to end another bit the dust for me.
***Guest Review by mom, romance fanatic, and (someday) published author Summer Raines!***
Like a siren’s song, this book enticed me with promises of mystery, a little action and some danger. Okay, I can admit it. The cute cowboy on the cover did a bit of enticing also, but I do like intrigue with my love stories. Sadly, like many mariners before, I crashed into the rocks.
One thing I learned living in Texas is that any man can wear a hat and boots, but that doesn’t make him a cowboy. Cowboys are loyal and protective. They keep chivalry alive and will help just about anyone in need. They play hard, work even harder. And they love the women in their lives something fierce. Dawson, my friends, is a real cowboy!
Here’s my problem though—I hate Annabelle, the heroine. She’s mean. The only person she’s nice to is Dawson’s mom. She’s a snob. I don’t believe she’d be able to find a happily ever after with a cowboy because she would say, “ew he’s dirty” every time he had to go check on the cows. Throughout the book, every character thought that she had always looked down on the town and everyone in it, so I don’t want her to be with my book boyfriend or spend any time with his awesome family.
I’m irritated because Dawson deserved better! He just kept taking her crap and coming back for more. I understand wanting to be charitable and helpful, but I mean come on! Annabelle needs (fill in the blank) – Dawson to the rescue. Even though she would blast him with attitude every single freaking time he showed up, he would somehow talk her into accepting what he was trying to do for her. But I think he should’ve left her to fend for herself and die alone in her grandmother’s house.
I did like the premise, most of the secondary characters, and I thought the plot line was interesting. However, I would’ve liked to be introduced to the details of the mystery a bit slower. It seemed like almost every piece of the puzzle and the players in this game of cat and mouse were revealed too early.
At first, I had a hard time following along. I had to slow down and really concentrate. I blamed it on all the head hopping, but eventually I realized it was the info dumps. So. Many. Info dumps. For example, during one about the sheriff, I learn about their spouse as well. I made the assumption that this would be important later (the spouse’s knowledge would help find something/ solve a clue) but I don’t remember another mention of this person.
Probably my absolute number one pet peeve while reading is REPEAT info dumps. It wasn’t a good idea to throw the character’s life story at me the first time they were introduced, so please don’t play sad reruns of the same details every time they show up in the story.
I also didn’t see any new feelings developing. Not one. The story is ex-lovers constantly battling the hurt of breaking apart years ago. They internally explored the love they once felt and hurt feelings from the breakup, but I didn’t see any character growth driving them toward a reconciliation. I feel like the HEA is a Happy For Now, because they haven’t seen each other for years and didn’t learn enough about each other NOW for me to believe they will stay together forever.
This book is part of a series, but sadly it didn’t make me yearn to find out what happens with the other Clementine sisters.

It seems there’s always something crazy and exciting happening in Whitehorse, Montana. Oh! And murders too! Hard Rustler by B. J. Daniels is the first book in her Clementime Sisters series. Annabelle Clementine falls on hard times, losing her modeling job and getting blackballed in the industry so she returns home to Whitehorse to sell her grandmother’s home after Grandma Frannie’s death. The idea is to get in, sell quickly and get out, hopefully without running into many people she knows. The first person she runs into before even pulling into Whitehorse is the guy whose heart she broke when she left town to become a model. Dawson Rogers helps Annabelle out when she runs out of gas on her way to Whitehorse. He knows then and there that he needs to keep ahold of his heart and not let Annabelle, “Annie” in again. What are the odds of that happening? Hmmm….
B.J. Daniels is one of my favorite authors. She always writes a really good story and this one is no exception. I enjoyed all her characters and the storyline. The pace was just right and the suspense thrilling. I can’t wait to read about the next Clementine sister.
