Cold. Callous. Cocky.A total playboy with abs for days, a panty-melting smirk, and a face the gods themselves would be jealous of.And he’s my new boss.None of that matters, because as a single mom, men like Alexander Harding are the last thing I need. What I do need is this job, so I’m going to keep my head down, work hard, and avoid that asshole as much as humanly possible. But then he gives me … then he gives me an offer I can’t refuse, even though everything inside of me is warning me to run away and never look back.
It’s just one weekend.
One weekend to convince a potential client that Alexander has changed from the player who spent more time in the bedroom than the boardroom into a family man they’d be happy to go into business with.
But the more time I spend with him, the more I realize that there might be a beating heart buried under his designer shirts and spectacular pecs after all…which is bad news for me.
Because the only thing worse than hating your boss is falling in love with him.
Hard Place is a FULL LENGTH novel, and book one in the Hard To Love Series

I lloved this story and can’t wait for part 2! I recommend this book, series, and author.
Oh does Emily Goodwin hook you in with her stories! This one ropes you in and sucks you down into the world that she has created. To say the banter between Alex and Harper is intense, but it sizzles with these two. I adored how they go back and forth between each other. I was giggling a lot with them. As a single mom, Harper is a fighter but is guarded. I cannot say I blame her. She wants to protect her girls. I was the same with my daughter when I started to date again. Their connection was magnetic though. Even though Alex tries to fight it. Being so jaded, he has a hard time wanting to feel something. And with Harper, he does and scares the hell out of him.
Overall, this is an epic start to the series and I am soooo dying to get more for this one. I find that Goodwin writes so smoothly that you just devour her words and just want to cry when it is over because you really want more! Hard Place is just like that. I need more!
What a way to start this series, I really need book 2 now! Alex and Harper story is so intense, this enemies to lovers romance will get to you. A single mom and a rich playboy boss story where chemistry is off the charts, the angst is also there, how both characters start to grow and overcome their demons is something I enjoyed reading. A total recommended book, might want to wait for next one if you don’t like cliffies but totally worth.
I just love Emily Goodwin. I have yet to meet one of her books that I just did not love.
Though this one was shorter than most, it still made a great impression on me.
I love the fact that the heroine in this story is a single mom of twin girls and though she is having to pinch more pennies than she has to make sure her girls have what they need and are cared for, she is a rockstar.
Harper makes a great impression with her boss and is promoted up to assistant to the CEO of the company. What she didn’t realize was that her new boss is the guy who stole her parking spot, and the rude guy who didn’t apologize. So after mouthing off to him in the parking lot the night before, she walks in to her new office only to find out that he is the one who she will be the new assistant to.
Alex is no where in search of woman to settle down with or much less get involved with for more than a one night stand. But after spending some time with Harper, he starts to question it, but then won’t let his mind wonder too much on the thought, because she deserves better. But when his sister talks some sense into him and he finally chases after what he wants in life- everything comes to a halt with an unexpected visitor when he gets to Harper’s home.
This book will leave her HANGING!!! But in a good way and I know when we get book two we are going to love it! I felt this same way when I read Emily Goodwin’s Cheat Codes before the second one in that series came out.
The sexual tension and angst you feel in this book will have you on the edge of your seat. So totally swoon worthy and great laughs.
Hard Place by Emily Goodwin is the first book in her Hard to Love series. An enemies to lovers / fall for your boss trope that tells the story of Harper, single mother of twins and her new boss, the surly yet sexy, Alex. What starts as a clash of personalities and a series of ill-timed run-ins turns into more when both Alex and Harper can’t stop thinking about each other. Trying their utmost to keep it professional, Harper needs the job and Alex has a strict no dating the employees code, they fail in an epic way when a huge account is on the line and they wind up on a weekend away, pretending to be boyfriend and girlfriend so Alex can schmooze the client. What started as a ruse turns into so much more – but when a blast from the past shows up will everything change for these two who are only JUST trying out their new relationship? Ends on a cliffhanger. Enjoy!
If you love single parent and office romance reads then pick this one up. I adored this one. I love Harper and her girls so much. She does everything she can for those girls and it warms your heart so much. She is smart and strong. Then there is Alex. I have a feeling we are just getting started with him with this one. He is still a bit of a mystery but you see these personality changes coming over him as Harper enters his life. Even being a bit of a slow burn you still get enough heat coming off the pages. I’m so dying to know what happens next with this cliffy Emily Goodwin gives us. You will just love Harper and Alex once you read Hard Place. I so need the next book right now. I couldn’t put this one down
Hard Place is book one of Harper and Alex’s story by Emily Goodwin. Its wonderfully written and has great character growth. I was immediately pulled into their story.
Harper is a single mum to two adorable little girls and she’s a struggling financially. When a new job opportunity drops in her lap she grabs on with both hands. Alex is Harpers rich and sexy new boss hes also the love me and leave me type but when he meets Harper he begins to think that could have so much more.
A fantastic read and I can’t wait for October to roll by to get my hands on book 2.
Oh this book is soo good. Single mom of twins, Harper is struggling to give her girls a good life. In a low paying job and apartment in the bad part of town she does the best she can. She gets a promotion moving her to a higher paying job with better benefits. Enter Alex, CEO rich playboy with hidden layers, my favorite.
This is an enemies to lovers, office romance that will blow you away and make you beg for more. Especially since it ends on a cliffhanger.
Loved Harper and Alex together their chemistry is off the charts.
Hard Place by Emily Goodwin is the First book in the Hard to Love Series. This starts the story of Alexander and Harper.
Harper is a struggling mom of two twin 5 year old daughters. So when a new job comes up but she will be having to work closely to Alexander a playboy boss who is sometimes hard to work with she goes for it. Harper’s plan is to keep her head down and focused on her job with no plans to fall for him. But then Alexander has a plan to improve his image to seal a deal which involves Harper. Will this be what weakens her plans? I am really enjoying their story and can’t wait for the next installment in the next book.
I definitely enjoyed this book and can’t wait for the next one as this ends in a cliffhanger. Emily Goodwin hook you in with her writing! This one ropes you in and sucks you down into Alex & Harper’s world. To say the banter between Alex and Harper is intense, but it sizzles with these two. I adored how they go back and forth between each other. I can’t help myself from grinning the whole time they’re together.
Harper Watson is a single mother to twin daughters and all she wants is to be able to give them the best life possible because she had them very young. When she’s given an opportunity to get a pay rise she took it. Only to find her new boss, Alex Harding, cold and unnerving to be around. And he doesn’t believe in love. But then he met Harper…
They bring out the best in one another and make each other happy. They make each other see a future they might not have thought possible. Then, someone from her past comes back and everything is thrown off the loop between them.
This is a well-written and captivating story with a very slow-burning office romance. The characters are likeable and a great match. And Harper’s daughters are just too cute!
Such a great book! I fell in love with Harper immediately. I think any mom can easily relate to her parenting struggles and the REALNESS of motherhood. It’s not always pretty. I set myself up to not like Alex, but he really is a good guy who happens to be dealing with personal “stuff.” This just makes his character more relatable. I got so caught up in this book, I didn’t realize I was at the end until it ended. Luckily book two isn’t far away, I can’t wait to see where that twist takes them. Although I’m going in Team Alex all the way!
Hard Place has so many of my go troupes, single parent, office romance, family, and so much more. I really liked Harper, she is a mom who’s not afraid of a little hard work, to give the her girls the life they deserve. She is caring, and so loving to her adorable little girls, who you can’t help but love. Her new boss Alex is a jerk, or is he? I found this story to be so heartfelt, and realistic. I can’t wait to read the conclusion to this story and find out how it ends.
I love a good enemies to lovers office romance. It is my favorite trope. Alex was so broken and I loved it. He wasn’t the normal cocky jerk, he was cold and callous, but he had a reason. I identified with Harper a lot in this book and the way she wanted to do everything possible for her kids. She was struggling to make ends meet, but never stopped trying. She wanted what was best for them and kept going. Everyday. I loved how Alex recognized this in Harper and he saw something special in her. He realized his life was so empty and he needed something, needed her. I didn’t realize this was a cliffhanger, I was concerned it wasn’t getting wrapped up like it should and then BOOM! Cliffhanger. I will read the next for sure. I need more Alex and Harper.
Hard Place is the first book in the Hard to Love Series and is an enemies to lovers/office romance. October 3rd can’t get here fast enough! I knew at the beginning that this book would have a cliffhanger because Emily Goodwin said that the story will continue in book 2. It still didn’t stop my dismay that I felt at the end of this book!
Harper Watson is burning the candle at both ends. She is trying to raise her twin daughters on little to no money. Harper is a single mom just trying to make it day to day. Harper gets a promotion where she works and now she will be Alexander Harding’s PA.
Harper really needed that job and Alex can be a jerk. But, the chemistry sparks fly between these two.
There is a surprise ending. At least I was surprised!
I loved reading Hard Place and now can’t wait for Hard Truth. Fortunately, the wait won’t be long.
Hard Place – held my attention. I didn’t want to put this book down and I read it in a day. It has angst, romance and a little sexiness going on. LOVED it!
it was amazing
Holy Cliff hangers!!!
I was so blown away by Alex and Harper. They had this great push and pull about them that drew me right in.
I cannot wait to see what Emily does with them next
A great start to a duet! Alex and Harper sizzle from the start. A bit of hate to love! Both are broken but strong. This book jumps right in doesn’t stop! Cannot wait for book two!!!!!!!
I can’t handle my love for this story!
I fell in love with Harper and Alex, instantly. How could I not? Even though he is a little grumpy and a bit hateful sometimes, he is such a good guy, and he is dying to accept that he is ready to settle down, but he has so many fears clouding his heart’s desires. And Harper? She is an excepcional mother to lovable twins. She’s kind, determined and a hard worker.
I was dying the entire story for them to finally get together because they want to be with each other badly, but I can’t deny how much I LOVED the build up in their relationship, they have so many ups and downs, but that’s the point. It adds layers of angst and intrigue in the mix. It made me fall in love with them even more, getting to know their demons, their pasts, their fears, and their hopes for the future. Ahhh I just love everything about this story. I loved them falling in love. They share such a wonderful connection. The chemistry is intense and the frenemy relationship, turned friendship, turned something else, gave me life.
I AM DYING FOR THE NEXT BOOK!!!!
Incredible, addictive and swoon worthy.
Holy Hannah!! This was incredible. I devoured this book. The slow build of the will they or won’t they kept me turning the pages as fast as I could read. Harper was such a relatable character. As a single mom myself I understood her struggles, her feelings. Her resilience and strength were so great. I just love her. Then there’s Alex. The epitome of a loveable A-hole. Especially once you find out the details of his back story. As you get to know him you realize there is an amazing and caring guy under all those layers of brooding and resentment. These two had such great chemistry. They are exactly what the other needs. And that is why that cliff hanger killed me!!! I am going to go crazy wondering what it’s going to mean for Book two in October. Yes y’all, it ends in a cliffy but it’s so perfectly built up that you’ll quickly work past the shock and move right on to excitement for what’s to come.
Loved loved Alex and Harper. Beautiful Harper was the single mom of adorable identical 5 year old girls. She’s dedicated her entire life to them. She hardly has any friends, social life etc. Her life revolves around those girls. Alex is a rich but broken. When him and Harper meet the first time it wasn’t the best impression. But joke was in high because the following day she finds out he’s her new boss and he finds out she’s his new assistant. It starts out rocky but then it has its moments. She’s hot but quirky and sweet all wrapped in one. Alex is nice and sweet but broken because of his childhood and his despise of his dad. But him and Harper get close and it’s entertaining and oh so sweet. But then came the omg cliffhanger!!!!!! What the what!!!! One of the things I loved was Alex with the twins and his relationship with his nephew, .
Holy I CAN NOT wait for book 2, that tiny little cliffy at the end of the book, was not expected at all. Harper seems like a saint, single mom of twins, the good girl, the girl who hates to break rules. And then there is Alex he is the definition of rich bad boy. But holy these two together are like so perfect.
