Noir, for sure; and a wonderful start to the series.
A great read! The action flows and the characters are compelling. Couldn’t put it down.
A New York cop, Tom came to London to find the person who killed his wife and son, Sarah and Tommy. He turned into a drunk, investigating divorce cases, and losing hope. His landlord and friend Amir tries to talk him into a lifestyle change, but it isn’t until Tom gets into the search for missing boys that he finds his feet again. The book is fast paced and gritty, and the conclusion is shocking.
Good detective story. Good selection/mix of characters keeps the reader interested in pushing on through the book. Author blended three or four different sub plots that all contributed realistically to the ending. Nice twist by author at the end to make great teaser for the next book.
Good story, very possible. strong main characters.
Well written. Very intense and exciting as the story evolves.
good, easy read; but not great
Am currently reading the last in this series. After reading the first one, I read a new one every night!
Enjoyable book. A page-turner that never seemed to get too tedious. Although all through the book I felt something from the story-line was missing and it had to do with how his family had been killed.
I felt too little information was given in the first of the series, but having not read the rest of the series, there may have been a good reason for that if not only to draw you into finishing the rest of the series, which I’m not inclined to do really since there are six more books in the series.
The fact it was set in London, was okay I suppose, but the written language coming from Londoners, didn’t quite reflect that. I spent fourteen years living in Asia with a ton of Brits and flat out they just don’t talk like us, so I think it would have been a bit more realistic to have researched how to write that way.
All-in-all though, a pretty good read.
Enjoyable story that pulls you into the main character’s quest with a twist of an ending.
I read the first of the books and now Im on the 3rd on and can’t wait until I reached the end. Very enjoyable keep it up
a quick easy read with an old time hard nosed attorney, leading all of the way to the anticipated finish.
I really wanted to like this book. The two things that put me off were the protagonist’s obsession with alcohol and the author’s writing style, which I would describe as simplistic and disjointed. I finished it, but barely. The tease at the end didn’t work for me. I won’t be reading the sequel.
Thomas Blume, expatriate, ex-star NYPD detective with the brightest of the bright future on the force, moves to London, to find the truth about the murder of his wife and only child. Lonely, consumed by self-recrimination, trying to drown his loss in beer and cheap whiskey, instead of following the task for which he moved to the other side of the pond. In the meantime, he supports a squalid living with odd PI jobs, he hates.
On the advice his only friend, landlord and occasional free meal provider, he sets out to do what he is destined for, solving crimes perpetrated on other people. That is how he gets involved with a cold case of child abduction, that might have a connection to a current case, too.
This is the beginning of the narrative that starts a bit slow, and a bit confusing but picks up considerably after one conquered a third of the book. Following that it gets interesting to the point that one has a hard time to put the book down. Blume solves what it is to be solved, and in the process, he finds and redeems himself from a useless drunkard alien to be soon deported, to a hero.
Th end is a twist like a Bavarian pretzel, but it is a good twist. Not the kind of twist that one often finds in thrillers, for the sake of serving the reader up with an illogical turn for shock sake. Th ending, that hints toward a new clue regarding Blume’s family demise, opens the door to the continuation of a series not unlike “The Fugitive” TV hit of yore.
The writing is a bit stiff to my taste, and P.T. Reade could do better if he adopted a style with Pinot Grigio like dry humor the host country of Tom notorious for (the humor, not the Pinot Grigio). But that is just my opinion, and I could be wrong. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t be surprised if the readers of “Hard Fall” would be anxiously looking for the next installment of Blume’s search for the truth about what happened to his wife and son.
Very well written
I really liked this book. I was disappointed that it was only a novella. I will definitely read more from this author.
Enjoyed this book! The characters were well developed, the story flowed and was quite the page turner from the beginning. PT Reade has scored high marks once again!
This book not only is it a page turner that keeps you on the edge of your seat, it makes you think & throws twist at you.
Very well written
kept me guessing
