From the author of the popular Maternal Harbor comes Harbored Secrets (a contemporary novel with a psychological mystery in the unearthing of family secrets.)
Readers claim the twists and turns are more and more compelling.
In May of 1935, Blinny Platt’s homestead shack burns to the ground forever leaving her family asunder, scattering them like the embers flew on the Montana wind. She was only … flew on the Montana wind. She was only eight years old, sent away and in charge of her little sister. She could handle that because Platts take care of Platts.
However, it is the hidden secrets of her parents smoldering beneath the charred remains that haunts Blinny until 1982. She once again leaves the home place to build a house for herself. As the foundation is poured and the walls go up, each of the hurtful memories are uncovered. Finally the mystery, left in the ashes of the burned home, is revealed. How could her mother do what she did?

Excellent read! The relationships are fascinating. The reveals, and there are multiple, you won’t see coming! This is not at all my usual genre but I’m very I read it!
Ah, the descriptions. Thank you for returning me to the prairie of my growing up years with the sounds and smells. And, of course, the wind. Secrets, secrets everywhere, haunting everyone.
I was not sure I was going to enjoy the book in the beginning but it grabbed me in and I could not put it down. The characters are well developed, Blinney Platt is the strongest character who suffered most because of family lies.
The author’s expression of the characters innermost feelings felt so real. And I do like getting a feel for the landscape and life different than mine
Good example of how life and family are not always as you wish or assume.
I enjoyed this novel. It encompassed a wide range of emotions and reminded me of the privations the people who settled our country. It highlighted how they survived by helping not only their families but also their neighbors. This novel also shows how early experiences mold your personality and affect your life.
This is a good read with any interesting plot with a few unexpected twists. Initially begins slowly but quickly ramps up to become a late night page turner
At the beginning I didn’t like this book at all and was about to give up on it when it started to get interesting. In this book it is all about perception, who is looking at things from which side. It was an interesting story. I just wish Blanche had shown a little more common sense and a little less angst.
Vivid imagery. Likeable characters. Good engaging story.
Love this book. Great story.
Well written but more of a diary then a novel. Not really my type of book.
I was surprised by this book because I don’t usually read this type of genre but what a surprise. I really enjoyed a flawed central character who made her goal in life come true.
A family farming on the plains of Montana suffers deaths, grief and guilt when their home burns. Two young girls are sent to grow up with uncles, mourning their losses. Although their mother’s death scars them, their ongoing bitterness against the father who distanced himself from them after the fire is a deeper wound. The lonely landscapes of …
Blanche, age eight, feels responsible for her mother’s and brother’s deaths because the fire that burned their shanty started when Blanche’s mother was cooking Sadie Stew from a mean old hen who’d attacked Blanche. Didier is man who cares more for his prairie land and farm animals than for his wife and children. Only three years old at the time of …
Good writing, all plot resolved last 2 pages, I felt whole book, with fine writing, spent all of the story getting to last pages without any other lead up.
Thoroughly enjoyed, a good book.
I greatly admired the heroine of the story and how it built on family relationships that seemed very real.
It took me a bit to get into this story. There are a lot of characters to keep track of. Once I got into it, I couldn’t put it down. What a wild ride with twists and turns. It was a very unexpected story. Well done, Marie.
A moving story… well told…beautiful.
Good book
