Nice Set of Four Shorter Stories
I have read other books and series by this author, so I was curious to see how she would do with shorter stories. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed them. The first story is only around five thousand words, but she manages to create believable characters with a history, and thankfully, kept the plot constricted and appropriate for such a short story. Not all authors do that for the shorter forms of writing. I found the other stories a pleasure to read, too. Whether or not you have read this author before, I suggest you take a look at these shorter stories, some of which could be read completed during lunch.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
This book has 3 short stories & 1 novella by Jude Knight. The stories are well written, with characters who sound real.
My favorite in this collection is the one in the mining town in New Zealand, All That Glisters. Oh, I was so worried about Rose’s fate living with her fanatical aunt and uncle. And I wish Ms Knight would write about Rose and Thomas in Canada.
Another story who caught my attention was The Prisoners of Wyvern Castle, a Gothic tale, in which Rupert, imprisoned by his sister, is forced to marry Madeline. Can Rupert trust his new wife and find a way to escape? This story also introduces a couple of spies who are the main characters by Ms Knight.

Four quick tales in which hardship turns to happiness, and love prevails. The first three are shorter than the last, but all are packed with action, suspense, and strong emotions. This is a great book to have on hand when you only have a short amount of time and yet want a complete story. Very well done.

The Raven’s Lady
Joselyn was a brave woman who cared for the people in the locality. Felix has returned home after many years away, his cousin has taken up his viscountcy, as Felix is presumed dead. Is Joselyn the same woman he left many years ago and will she still want him? Felix is also trying to discover who is the smuggler called the Black Fox. This was an entertaining read.
All that glisters
This engaging story concerning Rose Campbell, who lived with her aunt and uncle. Her life was that of a drudge under the strict rules of her uncle. The one bright spot in her life is a visit of Thomas O’Bryan, her aunt’s nephew. However, her uncle has plans for Rose, that doesn’t involve Thomas. This was an entertaining read, I would have liked an epilogue and some sort of comeuppance for the uncle.
Kidnapped to Freedom
This was a very short story. There were a number of names to grapple with at the beginning and this detracted from the storyline. Some mention was made of Phoebe’s life as a slave. I would have liked this to have been longer.
The Prisoners of Wyvern Castle
This was the longest story in the book. The characters of Madeline and Rupert were very likeable. They were in an impossible situation but working together they were determined to resolve the problem. I enjoyed the way that Madeline and Rupert grew to love each other. Even though the villains had their comeuppance, I felt they got off a bit easy. An enjoyable read.
I did receive a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I did purchase my own copy as well.
I love how these stories came to be
A ravens lady
A wonderful short story with action and adventure. A truly enjoyable quick read. I loved it.
All that glisters
I haven’t read much set in New Zealand, and nothing concerning their gold rush. Another interesting line of conflict in this story was between Catholic and Protestant. I enjoyed these characters getting to know each other while being in an interesting environment, unknown to me previously.
Kidnapped to freedom
I really liked how this story was shaping up, but I just felt like it ended way too soon.
Prisoners of Wyvern Castle
I have read the novel that comes after this story. But it didn’t detract from the story at all. I thoroughly enjoyed this romance and everything in it.
