You’ve heard of these groups – the secretive ones that only the crème de la crème are invited into, the ones outsiders speculate about for centuries – I’m the second in my family invited to attend, but to them, I’m fresh meat. New blood. New money, too. They think they’ll elbow past me, that I’m here for their amusement, for them to walk all over, they’ll find out soon enough that I’m not.I may … not.
I may look like one of them, with my designer bags and clothes straight from the Parisian runways, but I’m not. I’m here for answers, to take revenge for blood spilled on their centuries-old Persian rugs.
I transferred here in search for answers about what happened to my older brother, who hightailed out of here, and my friend who seemingly disappeared into thin air. I certainly wasn’t here for the attention of the star hockey player, regardless of how much he willed my eyes his way. I wasn’t here for his scrutiny or his judgment or to read into his mysterious aura. I was here for the society, because only they held the answers I needed. That was, until I found out that in order to get those answers, I needed to go through him. He’s saying if I want in, I have to play by their rules, follow their lead.
It’s a game I’m willing to play.
I may be the second person I know of to be invited into their society, but I’ll be the first to make it out intact.

I was intrigued as soon as I read the book blurb — a college secret society, need I say more!
I thoroughly enjoyed Half Truths. It was a perfect mix of suspense, mystery, and slow burn romance. Logan and Amelia are perfect for each other. He’s broody and protective of those he cares about. She’s independent, smart, and strong. Amelia brings out the best in Logan. My favorite, swoon worthy quote is: “Oh, Mae.” He sighed into the phone. “How could you be a footnote when you’re the whole damn textbook?” Love them!
Half Truths was my first Claire Contreras book, but it won’t be the last. I’ve already pre-ordered the next book in the series, Twisted Circles!
It’s hard for me to even form words after reading this book because my brain is still trying to piece together everything that happened and what’s going to happen next. This book will completely immerse you in the world of Ellis and it’s secret societies. You will find yourself looking over your shoulder for cloaked figures and second-guessing the people around you. When I read books, I always wish I could be apart of the world within, but Half-Truths is a completely different world. Alluring, but terrifying. Eye-opening, yet mysterious. It’s a world everyone should experience, but few will be apart of. You’ll get chills. Your heart will race. And you’ll definitely fall in love. Claire has summoned us and it’s not a request.
Half-Truths is one of my favorite books this year and quite possibly of all time. It’s the book I will be telling everyone to read because I think that anyone would enjoy this world!
Loved it. Didnt want to stop! Logan was addicting! I wanted to know all the secrets. Mae was very likeable to me. I really hope there are going to be more and more and more books in this world. This was different than any other college book I have read. I have been recommending this to EVERYONE!
Wow, wow, wow…. Claire Contreras just gained a new fan! This is the first book I’ve read from this author and it consumed me from the blurb to the book…..I couldn’t STOP. This was one heart-stopping, suspenseful romance that will leave you gasping with the mind-blowing twists that are revealed. Definitely a 5-Star Top Read!
A brilliant romantic-suspense and my new favorite from this phenomenal author!
5 “I Never Want To Let You Go” Stars!
Amelia Baston “Mae” is the daughter of one of the richest moguls in the world. She’s lived a privileged life surrounded by wealth, but is very genuine and grounded. She’s a newly single college student studying journalism who transfers schools her senior year moving back to her home state of New York. She’s the new girl on campus at Ellis University, and is focused on graduating when she becomes intrigued by the university’s star hockey player. Logan Fitzgerald “Fitz” is practically a legend at the school. He’s insanely attractive with a mysterious bad boy image. He’s arrogant and intense with a dangerous air to him.
While attending classes and fighting her major crush on Logan, Mae finds herself in some creepy, unexpected situations. After her brother abruptly left the college, and a friend goes missing, Mae has a lot of questions. She’s looking for answers when she receives an invite that puts her in the midst of a secret society. She immerses herself in their twisted world to find out what she needs to know to help those closest to her. Soon she’s in over her head, and doesn’t know who to trust. While playing their games, she’s also growing closer to Logan, and before long she feels completely lost in him, and her feelings terrify her. She’s determined to come out of her senior year unscathed, including her heart, but love is an unpredictable thing.
Half Truths (Secret Society #1) by Claire Contreras is a brilliantly written romantic suspense college romance that hooked me from the beginning. It’s an eerie, thrilling, unique story that keeps you on the edge and wanting more. It’s full of secrets, lies, love, mystery, danger, action, and intrigue. I absolutely loved it, and can’t wait to dive back into this world! I hope we get a book for Lincoln, Nolan, or Adam next!
Suspense, great-great word building. So many twists and turns; secretive college society; romance…just very good.
My Rating: ****
Type: Standalone
Genre: Thriller, contemporary Romantic suspense
Narration: Dual POV
Primary Characters: Logan Fitz, Amelia
I picked this book on a random, based on my recommendation from Kindle. I liked the blurb and was hoping this would be fast paced and mysterious. This book had a suspense, mystery and some amount of thrill.
Plot is intriguing. Amelia changes her school to dig deep and know more about her brother’s accident. She is even intrigued by the incident that the girl whom she once knew is currently missing from the same school. In the initial days, she notices people roaming around campus in Red and Black clocks. She has a lot of questions. She’s looking for answers when she receives an invite that puts her in the midst of a secret society.
In the meantime, she bumps into school’s star, bad boy hokey player Logan Fitzgerald. He is a legend at school. He’s arrogant and intense with a dangerous air around him. With a missing girl, a secret society, a brother in the hospital, and a hot hockey star plot becomes more tangled and intriguing.
Logan was broody, mysterious and alluring. I could connect and relate to Mae, but I didn’t like her much, that doesn’t mean I hated her, it’s just that she wasn’t up to the mark for me. The layered secrets, the foreshadowing laced in the plot, kept me on toes till the end.
Plot moved at steady pace. Narration is good, but had its own up’s and down. Some secondary characters were very intriguing. The Swords, Adam, Nolan, Nora and Will were topping for the mystery. Some questions are still unanswered like what happens to all the missing girls every year. I wasn’t satisfied with the final conclusion, as I think justices weren’t served completely. I personally feel, execution and connecting the dots in the book could have been much better, with such an intriguing plot.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book! Its Intense, fast-paced, mystifying complex story. I wanted to read more about Swords, as soon as I finished reading this. Awaiting to see how deep the Red cloaks can digin.

Loved this book! Wasn’t expecting it to go the way it did.
DNF
My work colleagues decided to have a virtual book club so we could all connect with each other during COVID. Someone saw this book recommended on a blog and we were all intrigued by the secret society plotline.
Unfortunately, everyone was distracted by the poor grammar. The first time we met to discuss the book, everyone was consumed with the editing mistakes and not at all with the story. We made a unanimous decision to stop reading the book and move on to something else.
“sometimes being broken felt like a heavier burden than the idea of not being here at all.”
Wow! I loved everything about this book and am wondering why I haven’t read any of this authors books before. I was drawn to this books cover during an online auction. Inquisitive me, checked out the blurb on Amazon and added it to my TBR immediately. I was entranced from the very begging until the very end, struggling to put it down to go to work. The suspenseful plot was thick with twists and turns, not knowing if you could trust those closest to you. Each character played their role perfectly, even the evil and twisted ones. Twisted Circles is sitting waiting for me to sink my teeth into.
Daddy’s girl is completing her final year at the University where her father and brothers attended. One of the students who attended the university, recently disappeared. Some of the students theories were that Lana had runaway or she was presumed murdered. There were several secret society’s on campus, but the black and red cloaked people had here intrigued. Amelia or Mae’s older brother had told her a few things and as a journalism student her curiosity was peeked.
Logan was in the hockey team and had a very promising career ahead of him. He was dark and mysterious, abrasive and a player. When he literally bumped into Amelia, he didn’t make a good first impression. Like a dog with a bone he was persistent, but with the motto of slow and steady wins the race. He held many secrets close to his chest and Amelia’s brother was a teammate and one of his best friends.

Wow… I’m a little late for this book, since I’m already with the next, but I have to say that I love it!
This is such an twisted and emotional book… More into the mystery side than the love story, but the slow burn romance is also amazing.
Secret society is always a trope that I love to read but almost never find it, so I was thrilled to start this one.
Amelia is the h and she started the book trying to solve the mystery that evolved around a missing person and her brother’s accident.
Of course that all the ways led her to one of the secret societies around the campus, and soon enough, she’s in and with even more then just I’ve mystery to solve.
Her love interest is Logan and I loooove him! He’s just a fucking sweetheart to her and say all the right things! Perfection!
My missing star goes for the end.
I enjoyed the book, the writing, the narrative and the twist, but something was missing at the end, and I feel like I need a better closure.
Will I continue to the next book? Absolutely!! Can’t wait to see the other darker sextet society!
I can’t say too much or it’ll be spoilers but there is suspense, mystery, drama, angst and so much more that I had a hard time putting this down. The story sucks you in and you never know what will happen from one page to the next. It’s passionate, sexy, and the emotions coming off the pages had me gasping.
I’m a bit bummed with this story. It is a quick read but fell flat for me. I can’t specifically explain my opinion without spoilers but here are my issues in general terms.
The story line had potential, a secret society, missing girl, romance… but none of that really worked out.
There was a small mystery, sure, but over all there was no real excitement, the story read like a monotone narrator. No passion, no action, very little push and pull.
The characters were interesting but soon all but Fitz list their luster; and even Fitz was not what I expected. Amelia was supposed to be this strong determined rich girl with moral and a determination to find a missing girl and help her brother. But she fell flat when she cared more about cancelling an Uber and getting a low rating then caring about the missing girl.
The story was fairly predictable and the entire time I felt this déjà vu, like I had read this story before. Also nothing that was talked about turned out to be interesting and/or important. The author never committed to anything she present except the romance (which was the highlight of the story).
I feel like this was more an outline of a book and I was waiting for the author to fill it in with details, passion, mystery, action… everything that makes a story addictive. It is a decent story, no doubt, but I was let down more then I was excited or please. Maybe next time. 2.5 stars.
A secret society set at college with undertones of grief and intrigue? Yes, I’m in, and I loved it! There was so much, but it built, bit by bit, stone by stone, and then it was all knocked down and the secrets overturned like the earth during an earthquake. Young love becomes true love in the midst of it all, as competing loyalties fall away for true feelings. Intense, fast-paced, and ever-changing, I was caught up in the story from the start until the end!
Secret society’s a crazy adventure a big plot twist all this and more. This book blew my mind I loved it I want more. I have to say it was one I could not wait to read and when it was over I didn’t know what to think.
I loved how this book just flowed and the story captured me from the beginning. A dark mysterious main man who can’t stay away from Amelia. Amelia is looking for answers that no one can or will give. She transferred colleges just to find the truth.
Logan a mysterious man can’t seem to stay away from her. Family secrets are exposed. Trusts are broken and new friendships and alliances are formed.
When the eight calls will you answer?
I am a huge fan of Claire Contreras and was so excited for this book. After reading the blurb I knew I needed to get my hands on it. This book had it all. I love a romance with a slow burn.
I loved the suspense and wasn’t sure how things were going to turn out. I can’t wait for more in this series.
I will start off by saying I’ve read every single one of Claire Contreras books. AND I LOVE THIS AUTHOR.
This one was a 3.5 stars for me. I can tell it’s a <"It's Me Not You"> thing.
I think most can appreciate sometimes it’s just a mood thing. TBH I’m sad that I didn’t absolutely love it like most everyone else.
This story has a great flow. The mystery is constant, intriguing and I couldn’t stop turning pages.
Logan is the perfect bad-boy-mysterious-hero I LOVE HIM!!!
Amelia is determined and daring.
But I was left with questions. This is a standalone and there were some aspects that weren’t clear I’m just looking too much into it but I don’t think so. By the end of the book I still wasn’t sure what the purpose of was….. #NoSpoilers
I love Claire Contreras, the Darkness Series are one of my favorite reads, so I couldn’t wait to put my hands on this story.
I found it really interesting… until the last chapters.
I can’t explain without giving away too much of the events that unfolded, but it definitely didn’t end as I expected.
The ending didn’t give me enough closure, especially with some “villains” fates and I certainly needed more for Mae and Logan.
The ending felt too abrupt for me.
But now that it seems the book is part of a series, maybe this fact explains how it ended.
But in any case, I was left wanting more… a more satisfying epilogue for Mae and Logan.
