From bestselling author Karen McQuestion comes a moving novel about broken hearts…and what it takes to put them back together again. At nine years of age, Logan Weber knows the routine. Keep quiet, make the food last, and don’t ever cause trouble. He’ll do what it takes to evade the rages of his troubled, violent father. Even though he’s only a child, Logan already knows too much—has seen too much. too much—has seen too much.
So when the opportunity presents itself, Logan runs. He has no idea where his journey will lead, or that the grandmother he’s been told is dead is desperately searching for him.
Alone with no home of his own, Logan looks for a safe place to hide. Relying on his instincts and the kindness of strangers, the boy manages to touch the lives of everyone he meets. But his innocent heart cannot survive in the adult world without the most basic human need of all: love.

An engaging story of a young boy’s struggle to survive, and his quiet search for the love that will make his heart whole. Highly recommended.
I highly recommend this story of a boy and his search for love.
Happy tears
I really loved this book. I fell in love with Logan. What a terrible life he was living for a while. So happy he found his treehouse to stay safe, until he could be found. I loved the ending, no spoilers! Karen McQuestion had me from the get go, as usual.
I love this book with my WHOLE heart. No one can tell a tale quite like Karen McQuestion. Sweet, charming, often funny and always full of hope and encouragement about the world and the people in it, she never disappoints. I love the way this book pulled me in and didn’t let go.
I cannot say enough about the storyline of this book. The story of a nine year old boy who escapes from his abusive father and ends up in another state would be hard to believe, if the tale was not so tightly woven.
I highly recommend this book, but if you are triggered by stories of battered children, be prepared.
HALF A HEART by Karen McQuestion is a heart-wrenching and emotional story of a young boy’s search for love and safety from his father’s physical and emotional abuse. Logan Weber is only nine years old, but he has been through some terrible things in his young life. His mother has died in a tragic accident, his father is an explosive and violent alcoholic and he has been ripped away from the only person who has shown him love, his Grandma Nan. To add to his struggles, Logan has lost the ability to speak. When a chance to escape presents itself, Logan runs away only to find himself far from home and completely alone with no one to help him. Everyone he meets on his journey is touched by this courageous little boy in ways they would never have expected. Eventually, through his challenges, Logan finds an inner strength he didn’t know he had and discovers he is worthy of being loved. I truly enjoyed this engaging story of family, friendship and the healing power of love and I highly recommend it. I look forward to reading more from Karen McQuestion.
I was captivated by this story from the first page. Heart wrenching and beautifully written, I fell into the pages and didn’t want it to end.
Crazy how some children have to gro up!!!
A wonderful story about the resilience of children who have faced a neglectful and abusive parent. I read this book as a 40 year foster care professional and appreciate so much the honest , insightful writings of the author and how she was able to show how important the birth family is and also how important foster care can be for the child… even if you have to say goodbye.
I received this complimentary copy from Lake Union Publishing and Karen
Mc Question, for my honest review. I had read and enjoyed a previous novel of her’s, The Long Way Home, and recognized her beautiful character development, in this story too, people that you would love to know.
The story is based on a small wounded 9 year old boy Logan, who’s mother died three years before and lives with his alcoholic, abusive father, moving frequently, to avoid detection. Logan has been unable to speak since his mother’s death, and doctors have found no physiological reason for his muteness.
His maternal grandmother Nancy, has been searching for him, resorting to a retired cop for help. Logan has been told by his father that she died. After an abusive event, Logan runs away and this small boy, keeps going, trying to survive on his own.
His story takes him on quite a journey and meanwhile, Nancy takes her own journey to locate him, while evading her cruel and abusive son in law.
A moving tale that proves even the weakest can find the strength to survive, the elderly have more stamina than they realize and the quest to find the missing part of your heart, can be a journey worth taking.
Half a Heart by Karen McQuestion is a story of a little boy who has lived in a very rough situation and when the chance to run came, he took it. At 9 years old, Logan Weber knows the routine: keep quiet, make the food last and don’t cause trouble. He does whatever it takes to avoid the rages of his violent father. One day, he runs away and ends up in another state. Alone in an unfamiliar place and relying on his instincts and the kindness of strangers, Logan manages to find a safe place to hide. Hoping for one more day, Logan manages to catch the attention of Joanne Dembiec and Paul and Laura Sutton, neighbors who, in their own way, help him. Will Logan finally find a safe and loving home? Or will he be taken back to face the anger of his father?
Karen McQuestion can always be counted on to provide an emotional journey with a heart wrenching story filled with suspenseful moments. Half a Heart is an emotional journey of a little boy who has been abused and neglected. He finally sees a way out and he takes it, with not much thought of where to go or what to do next. A child who has learned to fend for himself, Logan is quite resourceful when he needs food, shelter and other necessities. It is heartbreaking that a child learns to be so independent through such horrific circumstances. I enjoyed Half a Heart as a story of one child’s resilience and his ability to affect the lives of the adults around him, especially the older Joanne Dembiec, who seems to be on her way to being a cranky and unpleasant neighbor. I recommend Half a Heart.
Half a Heart is available in paperback, eBook, and audiobook.
Logan has no voice and has a very hard life. Abused by his father, he is mother is dead and he is told his Grandma Nan is dead too. He escapes the violence, but is on his own. This was a good and pretty quick read with good resolution.

Very emotional!!! The abuse that Logan goes through breaks my heart and angry! Somebody do something!
My heart goes out to Logan and all kids in similar situations. I wish they all had HEAs.
I adore this book. I felt a range of emotions while reading it such as sadness, anger, joy and love. The characters were realistic as was the storyline. I will seek out other books by this author as she writes with real feeling.
This book has a few different storylines and I loved each and every one of them. I was so happy that the last few chapters were in the future to give the reader clos to the storylines. This story has a few laugh out loud moments as well as a few tears in sadness and then lots of happy tears. I look forward to reading more books by Karen McQuestion.
This was a quick read. I enjoyed the story and was entertained.
I received this book from the author through an Amazon giveaway. This is the first book of Karen’s that I’ve read, but it will definitely not be my last. The subject matter may make this a difficult read, but Logan and the other characters will stick with me. This may be my favorite book that I’ve read this year! This book touched me and I will be recommending it to everyone.
I enjoyed Half a Heart and found it an easy read. The story flowed nicely and the characters, this is a multi-pov character story, were all well written. The main character, Logan, a young nine-year-old boy runs from a broken family and unintentionally gets lost. Without getting into too much detail, Logan meets new people and reminisces about ones he’s lost all in the emotional story about a young boy trying to understand how he got where he is. Scared, yet brave, Logan knows he can only go forward and never go back.
