Haggard Hawk is the first in this modern murder mystery in the classic English style. Hawk is a witty and volcanic English ex-copper with four grown up children scattered across the world. He was ‘required to retire’, as the British so delicately put it. In truth he was sacked. And just as he’s about to go mad with boredom one of his neighbours does him the courtesy of being murdered. The local …
The local police warn Hawk against interfering in their inquiry, but he can’t help himself and pretty soon he’s back where he belongs – catching a killer.

“Retired” cop Nathan Hawk has anger management and drinking problems. Bored with forced retirement, he is eager to pursue the case of his murdered neighbors. I loved the characters and the setting of a small English village.
Dark but some humor. The main character was interesting and in spite of being told to stay out of the way of police he manages to solve the crimes.
Excellent read by a great author. The lead character is unique.
Boreing could not get into the plot
I enjoyed this author and will look for more of his work.
Well written, “village” life is different.
Hawk is realisticc. Hope there are more books with him.
I liked the main character – Nathan Hawk – butI was confused about the other characters because it barely touched on them before the unraveling of the mystery. The old English dialog was also a little confusing. American English uses different words for specific things. I’m not sure if I’ll read the other books in the series.
a “good” read have made a note of author to try some of other titles
Riveting read!
Great easy read.
Lots of action and exciting to read. If you like British copper, or murder mysteries this will keep you guessing
I like English writers and their characters. Hard to figure the ending and you have to wonder about all the nefarious activities in a small town.
Read the series–good book kept my interest. Loved the main character Hawk, and his interactions with his kids and his “map”
Watkinson’s my new go-to guy for English Detectives with an edge.
