‘This is one of Pratchett’s best books. Hilarious and highly recommended’ The Times The Discworld is very much like our own – if our own were to consist of a flat planet balanced on the back of four elephants which stand on the back of a giant turtle, that is . . . ___________________ ‘It was the usual Ankh-Morpork mob in times of crisis; half of them were here to complain, a quarter of them were … were here to complain, a quarter of them were here to watch the other half, and the remainder were here to rob, importune or sell hotdogs to the rest.’
Insurrection is in the air in the city of Ankh-Morpork. The Haves and Have-Nots are about to fall out all over again.
Captain Sam Vimes of the city’s ramshackle Night Watch is used to this. It’s enough to drive a man to drink. Well, to drink more. But this time, something is different – the Have-Nots have found the key to a dormant, lethal weapon that even they don’t fully understand, and they’re about to unleash a campaign of terror on the city.
Time for Captain Vimes to sober up.

The Discworld novels can be read in any order but Guards! Guards! is the first book in the City Watch series.

The start to my favorite series by my favorite author! This is not the best book in the series, not that it’s not hilariously fantastic. The mystery was rather obvious, and we’re still getting to know all of the characters. (Some of my favorites don’t even come in until book two.)
It’s fun to look back and see where Vimes gets his start. He goes through so much character growth in this series! I think the villainous Vetrinari will always be one of my favorite characters. I have to love a character who’s always five steps ahead of everyone else.
In short, this book is funny and cute, if predictable where the mystery is concerned, and has one awesome little spunky dragon!
If you haven’t discovered Terry Pratchett you are in for a treat. Guards is about the bumbling guards of the night watch on Discworld. You will laugh till it hurts
Terry Pritchett – ‘nough said.
Terry Pratchett is often a tonic on tricky times. ‘Guards! Guards!’ tells the story of the beleaguered and incompetent city watch of Ankh-Morpok as they take a break from their usually busy schedule of bumming around and not upholding the law the rescue the city from a vicious dragon. It’s full of Pratchett’s trademark humour and fantastical imagination and will please fans old and new.
Whenever someone says that they want to start reading Terry Pratchett, I recommend Guards! Guards! It’s the perfect gateway into a wonderful world. It has incredible characters who develop throughout the narrative and into the rest of the series. Pratchett has a unique and quirky humor but instills depth and humanity within the story. It’s just brilliant.
I love his humour and characters and the way he always manages to bring in serious points that, although lightly made, stick with me. Also amazing how close some of the fictional events match recent events.
First book in the Watch series of Discworld.
Maybe my favorite of all the Discworld books. Sam Vimes is my favorite Discworld character, and one of my favorite characters throughout all the kingdoms of Fiction.
Ankh-Morpork deserves the best policing it can get… which is pretty efficiently done by the Thieves’ Guild; surely they know crime better than any uniformedfailure who might be fool enough to join the constabulary. But they say that one truly devoted person might manage to make a difference. Too bad no one seems to care. No one sober, anyway. But dragons and high society ladies can turn anything upside down, maybe even a troop as wacked out as Ankh-Morpork’s “finest.”
The best fantasy—comical novel ever! A must-read. From a great author who will be forever missed.
This is the first Pratchett I read. Still one of my favorites.
